  • What source would you recommend for purchasing mylar bags?

  • FYI, a flat iron will work just as well!

  • Hi thanks for your vids, i'm just getting into food storage what the advantage of using mylar bags Vs. a foodsaver vacuum pack machine?

  • You can buy them on Amazon. You can also use a hair straightener. I haven't seen anyone else use one on you tube, but I find it works better then an iron.

  • where can I get the bags

  • I used the excess from my 18x30 mylar back to make another bag to use.

  • For a family of 4, how long will a 5 gallon bucket last?

  • This was an awesome tip because I was not looking forward to spending over $100 on a mylar bag sealer!! Thaks

  • China Mart... true and funny!

  • @BKSinAZ I laughed out loud when I heard our video host mention "chinamart" Cracked me up big time. I haven't set foot in a 'chinamart' in almost 2 years. Actually, December 16, 2011 will be my 2-year anniversary of zero spending at crapmart! Gonna through myself a party.

  • Good instruction. Thanks. Anthony.

  • what Mil. mylar are you using? is 3500 mylar 3Mil. thick?

  • thanks for the vid .i just ordered my bags and absorbers and can't wait to mylar everything in site :)

  • what is the difference between Mylar and aluminum foil ?

  • Are there any small foil pouches for sale anywhere to break down drink mixes and loose tea? Thanks for the video on sealing the mylar. Ordered them today and didn't know what the written directions were until I saw your video. Thanks for any info on the little zip top foil packages for storage.

  • storing in large quantities like that makes me wonder how you reseal it when SHTF

  • @somebunny12 buckets have lids. You'll eat through it faster than it will spoil. If not...irons didnt always run off electric.....;)

  • thanks you guys are great

  • Can you tell me where you buy your mylar bags and oxygen absorbers? I'm trying to find the cheapest place to get them Thank you for this video. Its is VERY helpful.

  • @momelock i purchased mine through wendy maes simpler living. But you can also purchase from sorbent systems etc.

  • @delta69alpha Thank you!

  • @momelock

I found a site I only dont know if its the cheapest one but you can take a look

    and see for yourself.

    mylar bags direct dot com

remove the space and replace dot with the .

    Take care

  • @LetsCook2gether Thank you!

  • Great info.

Other video shows using "Brill" brand buckets which I understand

are food grade and you can get for free from a bakery or grocery store.

Notice any difference in the buckets you have used. ????

  • delta69alpha is the grand master wizard of the 9th lvl.

  • @PathofTorah4life The oxygen absorbers are nothing more than salt and iron shavings so no i wouldnt worry about toxicity.

  • I did everything you said and my mylar didn't brick like it should ??, I used a 2000 cc o2absorber for the 5 gallon bucket and the rice didn't do ??? I have a clamp sealer

  • Put up three 5 gal buckets of rice and beans in one gal mylars using your method. Worked just fine. Thanks for the vid and keep them coming.

    ---Prepare for the Storm---

  • can you use a flat iorn like your girlfriend would use on her hair

  • Did not realize the mylar could take direct contact with the iron. Thought I had to use a rag between.

  • There has been a ton of "post" on forums across the web for years saying use a rag. I have not had to use one yet. There is a ton of mis information out there. That is why we preach to use/practice your preps/skills. The more you do the easier it is to spot the "chaff" from the wheat.

  • thanks, that was great!

  • Great demonstration on sealing Mylar bags with a regular iron. Thank you for sharing this information.

  • where can you buy mylar bags ?

  • @mralexk123

Check out Pleasant Hill Grain. They have great prices on mylar bags and the oxygen absorbers. Good luck preppin'!

  • I also have another question can I store flour in those mylar bags?

  • Hi,

Thanks for making this video and teach people how to store food. Hope people start storing food now its very important especially now. you can't trust the leaders these day. So be prepared !!

I have a question. Are the mylar bags with zipper also good? Or is it better to buy bags that I have to iron. Thanks in advance

  • 1500cc's? Good to know. I couldn't get Mylar bags. I hope the heavy duty pail liners I got will do. Thanks for the info.

  • Water?? Just thought of a different idea...

If you are in a rural area, or grew up on an old farm you may have 50 to over 100, pint and quart canning jars. What about boiling some water and storing it? Use all those old jars? It will be better than plasic storage. It would be something for a worst case situation, till you can find something more perminent.

    Good idea or not?

  • Digitalmanne, That would work, just with clear glass jars, you need to store water where there is 0 light. Otherwise it will grow algae in the water. Although you can still drink the algae.

  • Great video, Bob! I recently purchased buckets, mylar bags and oxygen absorbers and can't wait to get started with my long term food storage! Thanks for posting!

  • if the power goes out! LOL... well i would use and ole timy iron the kind you put on a wood burning fire..to get it hot!! hope this helps!

  • how can i store TEA BAGS, can i use the same method shown here?? and how long will they keep? do you know??!! thanx.. great info!!

  • thanks for the vid. love the Red Dawn theme

  • Good tutorial. Thanks. 5*s

  • A Dirt Devil Hand Vac is great for removing air. It has a long narrow nozzle attachment that will easily fit into the opening you left in the corner.

  • Part 2 (of ideas for saving seeds. YT isn't placing replies under the post. )

I'm making my seed-saving bags tube-shaped, so I can just snip off the top & pour to plant, saving bag & label, so when I get new crop to save for next year, or ship seeds to someone else the bag & row marker ready. Label Info example: Brandywine Heirloom tomato seeds, plant 10 plants (12 - 15 seeds), storage date 8-15-09. Source of seeds: AB farm, 7-2-07. Apprx days to germ: 10 -12; use scientific name if you have.

  • Great info which will help us out. Tks!

  • My wife has one of those flat irons to straighten her hair. I decided to use it for something useful... sealing my mylar bags! It worked great, clamping the bag together to make the seal. I've seen flat irons at the goodwill and yardsales for a couple of bucks.

  • @ArashiNage I was just wondering today if my hair straightening iron would work. I have an old one that is taking up space and I think I'll try your suggestion.

  • What about when the power goes out and your iron dont work? DOH!

  • Brownie -What about you do this BEFORE your power goes out? DOH!

  • i'd like to see the best way to protect seeds that are ment to be replanted.

  • cool dry spot in paper bags or the like. I tried some in zip locks ..planted them, and none took.

  • @delta69alpha good tip thanks!!

  • Part 1: Dark, cool, dry, lack of oxygen, away from varmits & bugs. I'm putting mine into these mylar bags with an oxygen-absorbing plug that's used for food products in these mylar bags or buckets. If you have PERFECTLY dry sand, you can mix your seeds with some sand, and measure for a "planting amount" like for example: enough carrot seeds to plant one 8' double row. write on the bag & enclose a row marker in the bag.

  • Not a bad tutorial. Some suggestions

    1) You should seal closer to the edge of the mylar leaving more opportunity for re-seals.

    2) You should use a vac to draw out the last bit of air.

    3) You shoud have 1 Gamma lid per food bucket so once they're opened you can prevent spoilage.

  • 1- with 5 gallon buckets there is near 12+ inches left to re-seal with 20x30 bags.

2- There is 2000cc's of absorbers in these 5 gallon buckets more than enough to take out the air in 24 hours.

3- see #1 if i have room to re-seal ;p. either way the gamma is no different than a normal lid except you thread it on. I'll save the 6$ and pound the lid back down each time. If living off these stores 24/7 a 5 gallon bucket of rice wont last long enough to spoil.

  • I cant tell you how many videos of yours has helped my wife and I with our food storage. Thank You!!

  • Excellent info Bro' I've been wondering how to vacuume seal my supplies

    Thank you so much

  • Good to see this done. Thank you!

  • How important is it to use 02 absorbers? If you've already got it in Mylar and then in a bucket, how much difference does it actually make? I'm a newb to food storage so I appreciate your information :)

  • Watch the long term RESULTS video on this channel, it will explain and SHOW why you need to use absorbers also.

  • Oxygen is the enemy of long term food storage. In the presence of Nitrogen only, food will last 30 years or more in the Mylar bag. By removing the oxygen, the remaining air is almost 100% Nitrogen. There is some water vapor and a trace of CO2. Also, for any bugs to grow, they require Oxygen. No Oxygen, No bugs.

  • Thanks for the informative videos!

  • I bought some mylar bags? Why!!!! bleep bleep, don't they come with instructions?!!!!!!!!

  • The instructions are listed on this channel under "Long term food storage Parts 1-3" :)

  • cool

  • Great video thanks. We have been wondering if those expensive food sealers would seal the mylar and they won't and luckily we haven't bought one. One thing we have used when storing blankets and clothing in the x-large bags is a dustbuster with the narrow attachement on it. If you didn't insert the dustbuster all the way you could suck out all the air before you seal. I would take 2 people probably.

  • Use a vacume with a straw taped to the end to remove most of the air at the last second before you seal for that rock solid "coffe bag" seal.

  • How long will food last in dealed mylar bags but no bucket?

  • *sealed*

  • not long if mice or other rodents chew through the bag. get a bucket

  • Magnificent.

  • Awesome, thanks for that one!

  • is it possible you can make your own balloon with this

  • Excellent video!!!

  • This is awesome!!! Thank so much for the information. I'm gonna try it out for myself and see how I do. Looking forward to more videos in the future. You rock Bob!!

  • Hi. I wanted to let you know that I put up my first 5 gallon buckets this week - using your methods. I was doubtful about using an iron to seal but it worked GREAT. The only thing I had trouble with was I'd forget to NOT seal all the way across the bag. I had to go back and cut a little section off so I could let the air out and then re-seal. No biggie but I hope I've learned my lesson. Thank you so much. You helped me greatly.

  • I wonder if you have ever stored vegetable based cooking oil for long periods. Does it keep well or are there any problems like going rancid or deteriorating somehow. We have thought that oils, as a good source of calories from fats, would also be a good food item to store while they are still available cheaply (and they can add calories to home-made johnny cakes, tortillas, beans, etc..., but we didn't know what to expect for long term storage like 10 or 20 years. Thank you for all the info.

  • I read pt 1 of your website. You are so right. The media is not helpful in regards to food. none. When I was a kid in the 70s, we had a supply of food- today- 30 years later, people dont stock up. very little food in the house. I am so glad to find you!

  • Dude, you rock. thanks

  • Great video and great public service. The more people who put up food, the less everyone else has to share and take care of others. (My level doesn't have ridges....may go get a new one!) Just what I needed to see. Thanks!

  • I really enjoy your vids. Thx for all the good info.

  • Are there any common stores that sell mylar bags like home Depo or Lowes?

  • You can order them online through many vendors. We have used Wendy Maes simpler living and sorbent systems for the most part.

    Hope that Helps.

    Bob

  • ...Wow.

  • Great vids Im addicted and have watched them all. I tried to comment earlier but it didnt work. I found a really great way to seal bags. My cheap Walmart iron wouldnt get hot enough for the heavy duty bags probably too old. Anyway I found a hair straightener and it worked awesome. Probably pick it up for $20. I really think it is the best tool for the job

  • That's a great video, exactly what I needed to see. You should have seen the first time I tried to seal up mylar!!! The level is brillant! Thanks.

  • love the music at the end.

  • Excellent and informative videos!

Thank you (all) for taking the time.

Following your guidelines (iron and all), it took me less than 1 hour to put up 5 buckets of food storage items.

    Beans, Bullets, and Bandaids!

    Keep up the Good Work!

  • Great vids; can the bagging process be enhanced by putting a vacuum cleaner on the bags and suck the air out, or is it too much of a problem?

  • personally i see no need for that. If your using the proper amount of o2 absorbers there is no need. But each person likes to do different things. i see the vac as a time/energy waste. You can try it,i know some folks talk about it online, but i dont want my vac hose near my food, dunno about you ;P

    Bob@PAW

  • i have been useing a vacumm pump, like one for a/c work...it has a 5/16 hose i use to suck all the air out plus the use of the O2 packets...seems to work pretty well.

  • Thanks for the video, can I ask a question? Wheres a reputable place to buy Mylar bags and Oxygen absorbers anyone know?

  • Shopsimplerliving is a very reputable source with good prices, add DOTCOM to that address.

  • Thanks SurvivalReport, I'll give that a check. Did you see the "canned butter" they have now? I forget the site, but if you run "canned butter" it will come up on yahoo (or google).

I thought they were so kool

  • Thanks for the heads up!!!

  • I like the iron better actually because of the multiple seals from the ruler/level. Really good video thx for taking the time to put out!

  • Thanks a lot!

  • Another great video!!
