Great times. I was lucky to have been in London when Steampacket was on the road. Don't remember where I saw them but all these people were around, sometimes together. Great places we went to; Finsbury Park (big pub on the corner), Crawdaddy in Richmond, Eel Pie Island, Blazes on Queenspark, the Marquee, Westbourne Grove (Can't remember the name of the place), The Roundhouse, Hornsey College, etc. I'm so lucky to remember at least some of it, many people can't. We're lucky to have it on film!
Very convincing revival meeting type singing. What a front line. John, with Rod and Jools backing, Brian Auger on keyboards and looks like Vic Briggs on guitar.
@Bluesdirections Mickey Waller (sadly died in London at 66 yrs old 2007) on Drums too - but do you know who was the bass guitarist....maybe Rick Brown??
long john had returned to his blues roots and i saw him very shortly in st albans before he died he signed a poster and gave it to me backstage im looking at it now it was twelvestring barrelhouse blues all the way with dave kelly and butch coulter big shame but all my contempories are droppping like flies!!! kennyboy wembleymods(nearly dead) 1964
Long John is (was) an old friend of mine, playing at the Storyville Jazz Club in Woolwich, London, in the early sixties. I had a guitar (a Kessler) than John loved! His guitar was usually in pawn so he used mine!
John and the pre-runner of Steampacket, played at the Bromley Court Hotel in '63? Reggie and Roddie!
Just awesome, electric. After all these years, and just seeing it on a computer screen, it still has the power to give one the chills, happy chills. And make one have to get up and shake it out!
I knew John. He was a crazy, lovable, mixed up guy. He sold out from his great love of the blues and Big Bill Broonzy to go for the pop and the top and the money. I told him that I didn't blame him, everyone has to live!
From the Gyre & Gymble at Charing Cross to Top of the Pops, John was a performer and a champion.
Long John's Granny lived in a street opposite ours, I remember being about 3 years old and wondering why there was a little mob of teens in the vicinity whenever he visited.
It was shot for the US show "Shindig!" at the "5th National Jazz And Blues Festival" in Richmond, UK, 1965. The Steampacket just recorded some demos for gigs and booking. This song is called "Lord Remember Me". Great Mod sound!
what a great singer LJB was. These were great days for british R&B. Is that Beryl Marsden? I heard beryl and rod on the radio this morning - Shotgun Express - another great group

@Diddleywah Sorry to hear that Micky Waller passed on. Will check who was the bass. Am inclined to think it could be Cliff Barton.

OMG I remember the Steam Packet - went to see them near Watford many, many years ago. How great is LJB?

Incredible to see such talents as Rod Stewart & Brian Auger as backups in the early days...

This stuff is so good, if only the greedy record company bastards just could have let them have some studio time...what a missed opportunity

it'd be kinda cool if she was!
u may have inherited some of her "edgy-ness", which would be a good thing too!

When I was a child I had a hair style just like Julie Driscoll has here!
I have to say it looks much better on her!

It's good to hear from someone who knew him! You were so lucky! ...
And, he was too... to have had such a good friend!
I love his early stuff.. he had a great voice, and I don't blame him for going after the money either... I just wish he'd left us more of this....
