This was when she was still learning it, so she probably skipped that bit since it's quite difficult relative to the rest of the piece. Some people learn certain runs in the piece first, and leave other parts for later.
question: how long have you been playing piano? I've been teaching myself (I say teaching myself because I quit lessons after Mary had a little Lamb) for...like 7 years now(?) and I cant get my fingers to move qiute as fast as yours.
exercise.... ive quit piano 4 years ago and have recently starting to learn Cohen's Masterpiece. The most difficult part is to have the patience to exercise. It's like a sport.
Gary freely hands it out - people have apparently been e-mailing him for it, though I found it off of a fileserver. :) Gary let me put it on my website, so you can also find it there, now, at dragonwarden[dot]com/music and just go to one of the Cohen links.
:) I'm gonna try to learn it on piano, but I am better at harp... Maybe transcribing would be fun here. :D It doesn't seem like it would work, but I will try. Thank you!
I love it ironically enough I found this video through Mr Schyman's myspace page. The man is a very down to earth guy and you seem to have caught his eye with this video. Good job on your "obsession" on learning the piece!
Thank you! Have you heard the original recording yet? Now *that* is an amazing bit of finger-work. :P Hopefully I'll be close to it by the time I give up. I'll make another recording at day 20 or 25 and see where I'm at by then.
The song is called "Cohen's Masterpiece" (or Cohen's Scherzo No. 7 as labeled by the composer) by Garry Schyman. It is one of the pieces on the soundtrack of the game Bioshock.
Oh yeah. I'm a huge BioShock fan. Cohen was one of my favorites. :D
Never knew the actual name of the piece until now. That piano scene still gives me a good chill.
Haven't heard the original yet. But I'm going too! Do they have an actual soundtrack for BioShock yet or just the 3 song disc that came with the Collector's Edition?
Oh, sorry! I thought you had absolutely no idea what it was, not that you just wanted to know what the official title is. :)
Yes and kinda. From what I read while tracking down the sheet music, there's an official soundtrack that was released (which was released for free), but it doesn't contain any of the 60's and other older-age music. Those songs were available in various places, but I don't remember if people ripped them from the game, or if they were in another version of the soundtrack.
Yes they released a 12 song soundtrack with a special edition PC-Gamer, I instantly bought it when I saw that it had the Bioshock soundtrack bonus CD, by far one of the beast songs is "Welcome to Rapture" as well as "Dancers on a String"
I was talking about the seventh measure. I don't know about 49, and you seem to make two identical mistakes in measures 6 and 21. I believe it's the chord with C bG C(?). If you can't find it, maybe you can hear it when you play along with the mp3.
Ah-hah! I think I finally understand what you're referring to. You're absolutely right about the mistake (your ear is unbelievable) - I was confused at first because I read the music correctly - I just wasn't playing what I thought I was playing. :P
And thanks for the tip on measure 7. I'm assuming that it's to be played just like measure 22, then? I couldn't find it at first because I thought you were referring to one chord with those three notes, and not the progression of octaves instead. :)
Sounds very good. Just make sure you iron out those minor mistakes before you get used to them. A mistake you made at the beginning of the 3rd line can be heard later as well, so I think you misread something. Anyway, you're doing better than I am.
There is one error I know of on the sheet music. It tells you to play bG F C twice. The second one is supposed to be E, bB, bG.
Thanks, I'll take a look at the music again. Can you tell me which measure that sheet music error is supposed to take place? I suspect measure 49 is incorrect and took liberties adjusting it, but wasn't absolutely sure if my suspicions were correct and if there were any other errors.
I've been playing less than a year and I'm up to about halfway through the piece. I have to practice the same parts again and again A LOT but it pays off when I can play a piece so advanced despite the lack of prior playing. What I CAN'T do, however, is the upward F-major arpeggio without TWO HANDS!
I love how you just rip it up *perfectly* with one hand. Great stuff.
Oh, believe me, even with several years of playing under my belt, I *still* have to practice parts again and again A LOT. :)
Thank you! But I think I may take the easy way out and switch to two hands also. :P One-handed, I am not always certain I'm going to hit all the notes dead-on. I would rather be much more sure, and it's a lot quicker the 2-handed way.
I've been playing since I was 4, but through my college years and a few years after that, I really slacked off because I didn't have regular access to a piano. It's only in the last year or two that I had my own piano again and tried to polish things up to performance level again.
i have self-tough me for 8 months, but I learn all my pieces, im not used to read them, i guess i have some talent cause i am now able to play some pieces like one man's dream form yanni, raindrop prelude from chopin, etc and now im learning cohen's masterpiece which I think its dificult less that I expected but still difficult, and until the las moment from yanni, I recommend you hear that song, it's beautiful
some minor mistakes i play piano too so i can tell you nice playing, that piece is very difficult to play i want to start learning it, but cant find the sheet music
Thanks - haha, if they're only counted as minor mistakes, I guess that's okay. I found the sheet music on a 2kgames forum after googling for it. Here's the link that was posted on the forum: files[dot]filefront[dot]com/BS+Piano+Solopdf/;8440973;/fileinfo[dot]html/1/1
kinda creepy to play this when its dark outside and you are alone at home :D

Wonderful work. Really. Just beautiful. I showed this to my friend who plays in the Syracuse Symphony and he was amazed.
Does, anyone, by chance know the name to the piece?
