I'm almost speechless but my thoughts are bursting with opinion on this 'sample scenario'. If I've told my son to clean his room, he'll get distracted with toys while doing it, defensive and argumentative if I give verbal reminders to stay on task, and so when a 30 minute task takes instead 2 hours for him, offers of an ice-cream cone or other verbal praise is very hard to muster up. He's 11. Jus' saying.

When giving a command, don't end the sentence with "okay?" because that is like giving a choice.
