You can eat it when it is immature and not brown. There is a youtube video on that by someone else. He's correct, make sure you pick them where the water is clean, no beavers, a running stream of known clean water.
@CrusaderofChrist111 yes, you can eat that. There is a video here on youtube where someone bbq's it like a hotdog and eats it with mustard. You'll have to look for it though.
@artsychic2000 I hate to break this to you, the guy that your talking about that BBQ and eats the top of the cat tail like a Hotdog is FAKE, If you look close at the end when they are eating it, it is really a CORN DOG
well, i must be doing something wrong, when i harvest mine( they have bloomed, so they have the brown "hot dog" on them) but when i get down to the rootstock its all woody and not soft and tender...so what am i doing wrong?...harvesting them too late?...
Loved the video. Can't wait to get out and try some foraging. It's funny I stumbled upon your video when trying to figure out what miner's lettuce looks like, because I'm in the process of reading Green for Life.
Cool Video......But you should really try curling your fingers in while you use a chef knife......I'm pretty sure Cattail Salad loses it's flavor with human fingers mixed in it.......
you're sexy

You need to learn how to speak. Try harder not to halt constanly while speaking, it is really iritating.
By the way, they are called "hot dog plants", not cat-tails. I am sick of everyone calling them cat-tails when they are clearly hot dog plants.
