They were never really racing together. Elio died in 1986 when Alesi was still a young unknown driver in the french formula 3 (and probably had another helmet design). After the death of Elio - who was one of his idols - he created his own, similar looking design - as a tribute. Perfectly understandable, in my opinion.
(and it's just the stripes on Alesi's helmet - the blue top is his personal style :) )

As for the design of the helmet, like i said it is very personal. I was a fan off Niki Lauda but i never copied his collors or design. I also never lended my helmet to someone else. Nobody even may touched it. Even not my mechanic.
But maybe that had something to do with my supersticion.
I think this kind of supersticion is not unusual among race drivers. I myself was more than surprised when Michael Schumacher completely changed his helmet design into the almost completely red one. And I even had some problems when Alesi changed the basic colour of his helmet (from white to shining silver)!

When there was a drivers' strike in 1982 (I believe) the drivers locked themselves in a hotel and refused to come out before things were settled between them and FOCA. Since they were bored in the hotel,De Angelis started to play the piano and those who heard him were impressed.Had he not been a racecar driver he would have made a great concert pianist.
As Nigel is known as a LEGEND, and Elio beated him some times at Lotus when they where teammates and friends, I think he could be a legend if he was alive.

Elio didn't beat Nigel "sometimes".....he outqualified him 90% of the time and he outscored him as well. It was Elio that Williams first approached to join them in 1985......he would have made a great champion.
There exists a beautiful Michael Hewett Monaco photo of de Angelis approaching Casino and nearly kissing the barrier at v high speed. Upon seeing the photo, Gerard Ducarouge frowned and admonished his driver for taking too big a risk!

I never understood why Alesi chose almost the same design. A helmet is a personal thing and the design says something about who's cariing it.

I thought that the chassis that had been controlled when he moved to BRABHAM
was the worst.
It was a chassis by which DERECK WARWICK also had caused an important reason
in Austria.
His death is very sad ･･･.
