An incredible piece of music - better than most bands' entire career output - just hid away on a B-side ... couldn't believe what I heard the first time I flipped over the single. If there is a prize for the most uncommercial band of the 1980s, these guy win it.
I found it impossible to study in college when I would play this. Forever thankful I was around whent Mark and the boys made music. The idea he stopped makes it so beautiful.

There has always been better music like this out of Europe and the UK. I am in the USA but my musical heart is an Anglophile (europhile too). Thanks for letting us be a part of the fandom of Talk Talk. A piece ot you will always be a part of us. Love. Peace.
@ChannelMitchy13 i agree with you simply because i like more english/european bands than american bands. but hey don't forget, america invented rock, jazz, blues, and rap. plus we're the home of the velvet underground; they're ground zero for most experimental music in this vein.
i just dont get bored of talktalk, not like todays throwaway acts, they created some of my best moments in life, ill go upstairs and sit and listen to talktalk,my family think i got a screw loose maybe i have,i tell them i want to absorb the music, but there not big talktalk fans,i am deal with it hahaha
Some of what makes this song great, aside from its vast array of emotional ebbs and flows, and the sheer raw emotion captured in it, is the sadness that such a rare treasure has fallen to not only idols of late, but also to idols at their time. It is now the rare grail of music that we, the fortunate enough to find and appreciate it, should, and from what I see, do indeed treasure it.
The first thing I want to do is sound like a "they don't make 'em like that anymore" boring old fart but you know. The truth is, that the best pop music was made in the sixties, seventies and eighties. You better get used to it.
This is the single most important piece of music I ever heard. At the age of 15, I bought the 7" single of 'Life's What You Make It' and was stunned by this b-side. It taught me how beautiful and touching music can be and set me on a life-long voyage of musical discovery. Twenty-five years later and I still feel the immense power of this piece. I genuinely hope that those of you hearing it for the first time, will get as much from it and it's legacy.

listening this song is like listening a Chopin's music. You don't if you fell good or bad:you just feel alive. Thanks to Mark. A Talk Talk tribute is on myspace gariac wih a new Life's what you make it version
I was looking so long for that song I heard 1986 in my youth (I was 14). I loved Talk Talk anyway, but that song let roll a teardrop down my cheek every time! It is so ... overwhelming beautiful!!!
Can't give enough props to the man behind the scenes Tim Friese-Greene, producer, co-songwriter with Mark Hollis, and keyboardist. He joined after the first album, which tended toward some pedestrian synth band production. Tim was instrumental in the progression of the band beginning with It's My Life. Mark did the painting but Tim provided the palatte, colours, and spurred innovation.
I really liked Today when it came out in "82 and pretty much bought evrything after that including the limited editions etc emi would put out.
I was starting to get concerned about the slightly american sound of lifes what you make it when I bought it on first day of release, then I turned it over to listen to this .....
What is perhaps most striking about this song is the brief pause at 2:52 in between the swells of synths, piano and trumpet. In that instant, once the music begins again it's as if you have been transported from one world to the next.
This is one of those tracks that slips under the radar of the mainstream and you can never fathom out why. You just feel pity for those who have never been priveleged enough to immerse themselves in this beautiful work.
It lights all the candles that mark the defining moments in my life. Just fantastic!
And yet tomorrow I will turn on the radio to hear Pink...Ne-YO...Oasis...Kanye West...Rihanna........
Agree very much mate and I am now working my way back in history for my music tastes now.... I'm into John Martyn, Nick Drake, Davy Graham etc... But, I also adore new artists like Boards of Canada and the amazing July Skies - I'd recommend you to hear them !!
The last thing I want to do is sound like a "they don't make 'em like that anymore" boring old fart but you know, I look at the likes of Razorlight, Coldplay, Kaiser Chiefs Mercury Rev, etc - all great bands....but will they EVER get close to writing a song as wonderful as this? Hollis's vocal on here ranks as one of his best and the combination of fragility and power in the music is breathtaking "they don't write em.........".
Indeed. The subtle lingering nature of this song is just inspiring, I mean it's infused with a gleaming complexity that no other band could ever recreate - so intricate, with no solid structure behind it... there's so much going on that you have to listen to it again & again. It's a true work of art.

I bought A Sides B Sides last September and absolutely fell in love with this song. Its so romantic and dark. Somehow this song reminds me of Blade Runner. Anyone else?
Everybody's laughing/Crimson sky/Set the sails our hearts are open/Don't cry/
I believe release is in your smile/The tide shall turn to shelter us from storm/The seas of charity shall overflow/And bathe us all/Walk on by/Make believe our exile's chosen/Untied

Just bought the 12" of "Life's What You Make

PS - I think Talk Talk influenced Radiohead, especially the song "Reckoner" off their
