This movie was so boring compared to "Glen or Glenda?", and not to mention that Bela Lugosi was actively participating in that movie. I can't help but feel his footage here is just an insult to his memory (which makes it suck even more because I really don't think Ed Wood intended it that way). :(
Did anyone notice at 1:19 that one of the "alien gadgets" on the desk is what looks like an over-sized fishing bobber, taped to an alarm clock, that is on top of a toy treasure chest? Seriously those are probably the saddest aliens I have ever seen.
This film doesn't 'seem' too bad. I have to see it first.
If you want to see a bad movie, check out The 'X' From Outer Space.
It's a low budget 60's Japanese film along the lines of Godzilla. A spaceship crew brings back a strange substance from space. It escapes and mutates with a chicken to create a strange Godzilla/Chicken monster that terrorizes Japan's HO scale countryside. The creature is named Guilala. It has antennae and shoots fire. It's as absurd as you think.
Bela Lugosi died during the filming. He was replaced by someone that was at least six inches taller than he was. The filming of the movie was actually at Bela Lugosi's real home. The man who replaced him in the movie never revealed his face. I can't blame him. hee..hee....
This is "S" rated which stands for shit! Shit, crap, terrible, foul, deposed, sublimation, extorted, really bad, bad to the bone, Hitler personality, spermed, constipated shit faced movie. If you wish to see something very bad just run this video!!! You will like it!!
The recent Rifftracks Live version was super-funny.
Question: Imagine that there really is such a thing as Solaramite (sp?) , the thing that, like gasoline, and ignites a ray of sunlight, acting like a fuse that would ignite the sun, then all stars in the galaxy, then all the stars in the universe...how would any alien race know about this? The first advanced technology civilization would have discovered it, then the whole universe would've blown up! Right? Right? I know I'm right on this...
"Yes I know it's just a Ed Wood movie, but these questions MUST be asked" (as Mulder might say) As BAD/GOOD as this movie is,and how many times I've watched it,is it just me that has this question about the Aliens? This is the 9th plan they have come up with to take over the world by raising the dead What happened to the first 8?They obviously didn't work either. If this is all they can come up with in 9 try's and STILL can't take over the world! Some SUPIEROR race I know they didn't take my sister
Actually, the movie was titled "Grave robbers from Mars" originally, but the baptist church (!) was financing it (because Wood persuaded them to make it, and earn money from it to finance movies about Jesus and his disciples), but thought that grave robbing is blasphemous, so they demanded from Wood to rename the movie into "Plan 9 from outer space". The title was their idea. Silly right?
I think it's really cool in c-o-l-o-r ~ I don't really see why some viewers are against colorization, for I think the process has improved considerably since it was first introduced in the 80's!
The reason I am against colorization is first, that for those folks who grew up knowing only color films, it is intellectual laziness not to acclimate one's self to black and white. There is no excuse for that stuff. Most films work better in black and white because it allows for a more clear sight of the actors' character presentations.
i think i read somewhere that Hitch chose to do 'Psycho' in b/w because color would have been too much of a distraction..what he did with light and shadow did as much for the plot as the plot itself..and there's something to be said about b/w: i watched an old ep of 'Rawhide' from 1959, and the photography was brilliant!
Thank you disabled1955. You give evidence to my point. Color should be used only to enhance the story of the film, there needs to be a reason for it. See the film "Odds Against Tomorrow" which helps accent this iportant point of filmmaking. Besides being such a great film, the fact that it is in black and white accents the actors motions, expressions, forces the actors to act and communicate and by these means gives tension and adventure to the story.
azrial, I really believe that Ed Wood was expressing his sense of humor when he made this, and most of his films. I find it strange that folks do not get his joke. Well, the saucers are up there, but you'll be in there and I'll be in there.
Hmmmmm what a unique idea....... Combining one of the worst Ideas in Entertainment History...the unnecesary and quality debasing colorization of classic black and white movies, with a film that is commonly believed by experts worldwide as the worst movie ever made!!!!! Elements of 2 of the worst ideas in moving pictures combining to make something not quite as good as either... EELS!!!!! sorry couldnt resist a sort of psuedo qoute from the mighty boosh there at the end!!!LOL!!
Poor Bela died halfway through production. He had a heroin habit, but it might have been just his age that did him in. Wood scrambled to get this piece of shit finished without Bela.
Actually Glen Or Glenda (Another Ed Wood Movie) knocked it into second place. Terrible movie, but still, making a bad movie is still better than making no movie at all, and you can always turn off. There's something fascinating about Ed Wood- Tim Burton knew this.

it did have a sensible plot line the catastrophic affects of global warming then global cooling, plan 9 was just randomness mixed with other randomness hoping to get something worth watching...EPIC FAIL!!!!
thank you for putting this up. i am completely obsessed with ed and was already planning on buying the new color version, now because of you i know that it will be worth it!
He did everything on the cheap and instead of Technicolor if it had been available to his budget I think he would have probably gone for colorization or the cheapest most crappy looking color system available
i love it!! i myself am a fan of Ed Wood's work, as mind-numbingly awful as it is. one thing i've always wondered is, knowing fully well Ed didn't have a very decent budget, where one earth did he get that wonderful soundtrack to his movies? it seems they alone are good unto themselves, just wonder how he got the dough to pay the composer who came up with them?
as much to say, u can learn many things in ed wood's work, when ur in film making, things that u aren't supposed to do. and right, his movies are really perfectly done to the worst. and that makes it priceless.
It's terrible how colorizing just ruins the suspense and performances in this movie.

Come on! this movie is the clear definition of "cult-movies"! The movie is (as it says on the poster) "so bad it's good"!
The most hilarious thing about this movie is that Ed Wood actually took this movie seriously! i mean, it's not pronounced as a comedy, dude!
And in somewhat way i can actually consider this a masterpiece!
Plus Ed Wood was not the worst director of all time!
He loved the whole movie-world! sacrificed anything to complete a full movie!
I love Ed Wood! He was dedicated!!!!

The Director of this film often put on woman's clothing to 'perk up' the actors when things were tough. True story.

I think Wood would have approved of his films
being colorized myself,
He did everything on the cheap and instead of Technicolor if it had been available to his budget I think he would have probably gone for colorization or the cheapest most crappy looking color system available
within his budget.

i love it!! i myself am a fan of Ed Wood's work, as mind-numbingly awful as it is. one thing i've always wondered is, knowing fully well Ed didn't have a very decent budget, where one earth did he get that wonderful soundtrack to his movies? it seems they alone are good unto themselves, just wonder how he got the dough to pay the composer who came up with them?

as much to say, u can learn many things in ed wood's work, when ur in film making, things that u aren't supposed to do. and right, his movies are really perfectly done to the worst. and that makes it priceless.

They did a good job on the color for this one.
Ever notice that Plan 9 has the same plot as the "Phantasm" series and "Invisible Invaders". They just did it better.
