Some of the birds were real, some of the birds were puppets, and the rest were animated. Its sad to see Melanie Griffith's mother (the woman) have her scared reactions in the film. Hitchcock tortured her ever since she rejected him. He would have birds tied to her almost pecking at her until she was literally terrified. Hitchcock, good work, shitty personality.

@puffpuffdustbunny it's the first movie of it's kind, we don't think much of it now-but the overhead shots and the wide angle shots of hoards of birds attacking people was unseen and cutting edge. This movie took a lot of work to make and has many great moments in it. CGI makes people lazy- it takes almost no effort to do effects on screen that few directors(Micheal Bay) make an effort to tell a story, it's all about profit and ticket sales. A profitable movie goes away-a classic lasts.

This was mostly filmed in Sonoma County right near where I live. They made it look like the towns of Bodega and Bodega Bay are the same town but they're actually miles apart. The music is from an entirely different movie called, "A Twisted Nerve."

@Gencturk92 Actually that is where the film draws it's horror element. Something that is calm, peaceful and would never in normal life attack or harm a human and then suddenly goes insane and starts wreaking havoc is terrifying in it's own way.

Take zombies for instance, corpses in real life could never harm you... unless someone throws one at you... anyway a corpse that comes to life would scare the life out of you! And so would a flock of pissed off birds out for blood.
