  • is everyone sure that was a "bobble"? being that Phil is as awesome as he is he could've just stepped out of the scale for a minute on purpose just for the effect! idk if he was, just saying! :)

  • @garywingrove Yeah, it's a little bobble... look at Phil's reaction to the out of scale riff he hits and how he glances down to get in position. He starts to hit the lick again but it's time to move on. I've seen Eric Johnson make mistakes like that, Clapton - all of them really. Hendrix LIVE is full of bad mistakes mainly because the guy was so stoned all the time. I saw Don Felder hit a clam on an Eagles vid and he is just GREAT! Dave Gilmour. I dunno if I have seen him mess up.

  • I and my high school buddies followed Phil when he played in "The New Hudson Exit," before he or I became a Christian. Proud to say he lived in Youngstown, Ohio, where rock really was king, along with "The Human Beinz,"(Nobody but Me), and later, Maureen McGovern. The "morning after" I was finally aware that Jesus was real and had become my personal savior, Phil and Peter York(later became a famous record producer)gave my brother and me a mini concert to celebrate the occasion. Phil is a saint!

  • does anybody happen to have the live one of true beleivers? If i remember right it was the opener for a Billy Graham crusade and the electric guitar work was phenomenal.

  • Wow, a "bobble at 4;22? I wish to the good Lord above that I could make some remote half-semblance to a bobble like that... bobble away Brother Phil, bobble away...

  • I first saw Phil Keaggy at 'Jesus '75 'on a farmer's field in Pennsylvania--was so Blest by his playing then, and now...

Thanks for rekindling memories of when I first fell in Love with Jesus Christ

    Thank you!

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is

the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Psalms 27:1

  • Ok...am I the first one to notice how similar he sound to Sir Paul? Looks like him too.

  • No sir. He performed in early and latter day many Beatles and Wings tunes: early with Glass Harp, and later with Glass Harp Reunions in Chicago. (Watch on You Tube) He is Canadian, with U.S. Citizenship. He probably has Scottish roots, maybe even Liverpool. Could have been a distant cousin of Sir Paul! Member of Love In's in early 70's of "Jesus People" in up-state NY. Great musician, writer, guitarist, all-around virtuoso musician. Hendrix knew of Phil and spoke highly + Clapton Gibbons.

  • @CUPanacea Canadian? I hope you are not talking about Phil Keaggy. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio not Canada. Hendrix didn't know of Phil, either. That was a rumor.

  • @calif562 You ought to listen to "Love Divine" off Crimson and Blue for a smashing echo of Sir Paul.

  • This contends with one of the best love songs ever. And its about this man's personal experience with God(Keith Green) Its a miracle also that this guy knew Phil Keaggy.Possibly if not the greatest guitar player ever born.

I could see that Mr. Keaggy was singing with Keith Green .Honered him.And most importantly, honered God.

  • Thanks for posting this song. I've been a fan of both Keith and Phil for a long time. I've always loved the studio work on Keith's albums as well as the songwriting. Good work. 8)

And unfortunately I can also relate with not having old recordings around I really wish I could listen to again though admittedly nothing like jamming with Phil. :D Take care.

  • Thank you so much for helping write this beautiful song that's touched my heart hundreds of times over the last many years. It is a real blessing and I appreciate your recognition of Phil's character as well as his talent.

  • "Your Love Broke Through." Written by Keith Green, Todd Fishkind and Randy Stonehill, the song would later be closely identified with Green, yet it was at Green's insistence that Keaggy's rendition be the first released recording

  • I heard Randy give his account of the writing... something like "Keith showed up at my house in the middle of the night and told me GOD had told him that I was going to help him write an awesome song".

  • Randy also called his wife to wish her Happy Birthday - from the stage... and had the audience all sing hppy birthday to her.

  • Phil was on The Nashville Network a few days after this as well and he mentioned to host Gary Chapman that he had just been to CA where he played the Harvest Crusade. I still have one of those Harvest 95 t-shirts and a couple of the Phil Keaggy True Believer t-shirts. That was an awesome period musically speaking for Phil. I sure enjoyed it!

  • This was definitely from the summer of 1995. In fact, we hosted him back here in Illinois a week later on the 21st of July. I remember Phil saying that touring can be an interesting road to travel - one week you're performing before an audience of 50,000 - the next, before an audience of 500. Frankly, I've always felt that Phil likes the more intimate audience size. Thanks for posting this rendition of "Love Broke Thru." It's a real trip down memory lane.

  • Somebody mentioned the little bobble Phil had between 4:20 & 4:25 in this video - He was having such a great time worshiping the Lord with his gift, playing his guitar with his eyes closed, lost in the moment and all of a sudden oops, he is out of position and the licks are a little out of scale. Phil is very human, but he is still one of the greatest guitar players in the world. He more than made up for the clams on his solo on True Believer: It was SMOKIN'! The outro was HOT too! Bless ya PK!!

  • Yes, I did notice the imperfections. You are certainly correct in your observations.

On a funny note, some would go to hear Heifetz (said to be the greatest violinist ever) and listen just for him to make a mistake. Imagine that...

  • In Wikipedia it says of Heifetz:

Heifetz is considered to be one of the greatest violinists of the twentieth century. Heifetz had an immaculate technique and a tonal beauty that many violinists still regard as unequaled. Yet, from time to time his near-perfect technique and conservative stage demeanor caused some critics to accuse him of being overly mechanical, even cold.

  • The beauty of Phil's playing is that he is absolutely warm, never cold. As Keith Green's former bass player, had the privilege of doing a studio session with Phil. I wish I could share some of **those** riffs here, but I didn't have the presence of mind to keep copies of the recordings. Phil was/is indeed a phenomenal player. But I was also extremely impressed by other qualities he had. he was so full of Jesus, and was one of the **nicest** people I ever met!..

  • If you work around musicians, you know how they can get. They can be so weird, eccentric, extremely self-centered, shamelessly egotistical and sometimes volatile (feeling excused by their great giftings for their sometimes unkind behavior). Also, the intensity of the creative focus in the studio tends to bring this out...

  • I should know. I'm not proud of the times I screamed out in abject pain at my wife for interrupting me during a home recording session. Or feeling either homicidal or suicidal when I had a family member helping with vocal parts and would not behave or was unable to sing even a simplest vocal parts...

  • Anyway, Phil was so unlike the typical musician. When he played at our church in Pasadena in the early 90s, there was a modest brother there, whose life was plagued with health issues & multiple surgeries, who played some harmonica. Phil invited him to play his harmonica along with him when he played special music at the church service. It wasn't like "the great artists is here." Just a humble brother with a sweet spirit. That's the way Phil Keaggy was.

  • @firstgarden7 absolutely true, saw Phil in Sydney in 1988 and he turned what could have been a dumb christian rock show into an anointed worship time i've never fogotten his sweet humble heart

  • @ChristianFreedude AMEN!!

  • @ChristianFreedude eh, I've heard worse come out of Steve Vai

  • @lavaxtris1 Yeah, nobody's perfect, everyone makes booboos!

  • @ChristianFreedude Probably cause he is playin a Strat. It just doesn't have the legs of a Paul.

  • This was July 16, 1995 Sunday PM Angel Stadium Anaheim, CA. Phil did Love Broke Thru & his 1995 hit True Believer. He also joined Love Song & played a hot solo on Feel The Love. The Harvest Crusade (all 3 nights) was filmed & televised by Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN Ch 40) . Phil was there Saturday (me too!) for 'Youth Night' & played Salvation Army Band, True Believer & Son Of God on a loaned custom Telecaster tuned 1/2 step low & he used Greg Laurie's vintage Fender Amp on both nights!
