obviously the moog is going to come out better. if anything this video is a useful way to see the differences between analog and digital synthesis. everyone knows analog is fatter and nicer but it's cool to hear the two directly side-by-side along with a visual representation of differences. thanks for the vid!
I'm starting to fig this all out, but I do have a stable idea of wave forms and all that. I prefer that digital feel the korg has (because it's a digital posing as an analog, and does a good job at it too). I.e the deepness of the res or any other patch that analogs don't have. It's very noticeable in the moog. In the sweeps the moog is-i guess- less dynamic? The korg has a much-lower?- range than the moog. To hardcore analog fans that feel the moog has might be more correct, but I like the ko
I think that instead of using the single triangle wave on the Mini moog, you did the "bent triangle wave thing" IT's right next to the triangle wave on the dial.. I think.
it´s the feeling of real analog sounds and not digitilized sounds trying to bee analog..and if u are a true synthmusicians (nerd) you will hear a big difference!
when u consider the price and reputation they came pretty close. ive got an mk and its good fun. i probably see it more as a toy to be fair. wouldnt mind a moog if they werent so expensive
Thanks for the comparison. I believe the Moog square wave was not quite symmetrical, which it of course must be in order to hear the correct hollowness of sound. I think either there is something wrong with the instrument or the knob was not set perfectly. By the way, MPrint666, why so uptight?
Thw Moog's triangle didn't sound like a triangle. And the Moog's dual-oscillator saw sounds 'breathy'...
Also the first filter sweeps on the Moog had this nasty raspy sound behind it.
Personally, I think the Korg and Moog sound good. The difference being, you can get a Microkorg off eBay for like £200, and for the Moog you're looking at 10 times that!
The Moog sounds good, some might say better, but is it £2000 better? I don't think so...
@seanissomething With the moog, you're paying for the sound, the vintage, the class, and the nostalgia. The MK is only 8 years old... nowhere near the retro style.
Another dumb comparison. They aren't comparable synths at all. One is digital one is analog. One is polyphonic and one is monophonic. One has legendary sound that is highly sought after and one is a bargain synth that sounds ok. Microkorg is so over-rated.
@MPrint666 Microkorg may be over-rated... but you know why? Moogs are thousands of dollars depending on which one you get. You know how much a Microkorg is? 400 dollars. So the question you have to ask yourself is this: would you rather have "legendary" sounds for super expensive? Or would you rather have pretty similar sounds for WAY cheap? They're both grand instruments, some people just can't afford a Moog. That's that.
Its not! It's a brilliant video and I thank you for putting it up. All I'm saying is, price does make a difference. The Microkorg is like getting a car that's ALMOST as fast as a ferrari for £5,000! Plus, the korg can do more stuff. Vocoder, effects, arpeggiator.
Still, again, thank you for the video! I found it thoroughly facinating =)
And still, the fact that the Moog is almost 40 years old and it still sounds [agruably] better than a modern digital synth is amazing, and a testiment to good engineering.
Wauw. I'm really surprised about this fact: I can actually hear, that the MK has smaller keys. The Moog is far the best - especially when it comes to filters, I think.
It's a quiet big difference. I'm not sure if these two can be even compared but personally I preffer the Moog. It sounds much more alive and mature to me, but the choice would depend mostly on the type of mix the sound would go in to. Thanks for taking the trouble doing the comparsion.
Is the melody at 1:10 something you played randomly,
or did you have Dizzy Treasure Island in your head at time? ;)

"Single oscillator square waveforms Minimoog" is clearly not single oscillator, you can hear the sound in two octaves...

moog wins this battle, try it against a korg radius if you have one? cool video.

i think you have too much money, but it was an interesting comparison all the same. cheers buddy!

analog is better than digital?
Obviously you're a musician who hasn't a clue what the hell they are talking about....I bet you couldn't do a blind test for these two synths

@seanissomething: It wasn't the triangle but the triangle/sawtooth waveform.

@Cds56 I'd rather just pay for the sound...
seanissomething 1 year ago
@nickeax: It wasn't the pure triangle waveform.
The Minimoog VCOs 1 and 2 can produce the waveforms: triangle, triangle/sawtooth mix, sawtooth, 1:2 square, 1:3 retangular, and 1:4 rectangular.
VCO 3 uses a reversed sawtooth instead of the tri/saw waveform and it can used as modulator.
Why don't self-proclaimed synth pros even know these basic facts?
albedoshader 1 year ago
@glfglfglf moog's often went out of sync, with pitch and other parameters as it's analogue,so that might explain it.
