What amazes me is that most sopranos are multi lingual, historically aware, very well read, well-travelled, resident (to cope with career demands) and notoriously intelligent. Not quite your average pop singer…
@umroo2014 Have you seen Ms Price and Horne's rendition?.. It's perfection!!!.. DiDonato and Fleming are very very good, but Price's rendition is superlative for me.. :)...
Simply awesome!! The interplay between these two artists is stunning. Joyce DiDonato is wonderful but I prefer the Renee's voice. It's simply a personal choice - I listen to Renee's jazz, rock and opera albums and I can't get enough of her - no matter the genre!
They are both great Mozart voices.. Mattter of fact, that is what should be their specialty. And they both think they are very cute! They almost have the same grin! Wow.. were they separated at birth or what?
@asdfopera You won't see that happen- Renee is too old for the role now and her voice far too heavy. The last time casting was announced for next season's Cosi, Fiordiligi was to be played by Miah Persson with Isobel Leonard as Dorabella.
@asdfopera Perhaps, but after another viewing of this year's Met Rosekavalier, I am convinced that it's more than time for the "older" stars to move on to some other rep (for instance, what I wouldn't give to see Joyce diDonato on the Met stage as Octavian......!). What looks, and sounds, alright in a concert setting doesn't always transfer to an fully staged opera, and with Renee now past 50, who in the word would you cast as Guglielmo? You have to consider the whole picture...
@suzanneetmoi What I would give to see a production where DiDonato is the Dorabella and Persson the Fiordiligi! Add to this Pisaroni as Gugliemo and that's the perfect cast for me. As for Joyce singing Octavian, she will, in Madrid next season, and I'm definitely going to attend one of the performances!
@thecelticspirit I am so envious of you! Be assured that the next time Joyce sings Octavian on this side of the pond, I will be front and center! We're planning on catching her in The Comte Ory next season at the Met...
@suzanneetmoi Arf I wish I could be there too, but NYC is just way too far from home. Oh well, at least I'll have the HD broadcast, I'm not gonna complain :)
@suzanneetmoi She told me that she's planning to sing the COMPOSER in Ariadne in a few years (MET).... I've heard her in concert, Philly, singing "Musik ist ein Heilige Kunst" and blew everyone away
gosh fleming is almost crying in the beginning when she reaches the high notes. i used to love her timbre initially. but then i heard the leontyne price and horne version. whoever hasnt checked it out absolutely MUST! it is a benchmark for anyone else who wants to attempt it!
This is an interesting comment considering Renee Fleming is a lyric soprano and Joyce DiDonato is a lyric mezzo. I'm not calling you ill-informed. I'm just curious if you want to elaborate on what you mean.
I happen to think that Renee Fleming sings a fantastic Fiordiligi, not least because she has such a range of colors, even if her coloratura is not as accurate as DiDonato's is.
I think Joyce is a little more with it here, and is making Renee work. And their voices blend so well.
Your spending time looking at cleavage rather than listening to her beautiful voice, you want cleavage go to the Playboy channel. This was a fun duet and both seemed to have fun doing it, As for who has the brighter , clearer, more powerful voice imho it's Joyce all the way.
I love Renee, but agree with the crooning comments - I really like her older recordings; they don't seem to have so much of that sound. DiDonato is a genius!
i'm sorry, but Fleming does "croon." They aren't mutually exclusive..they both happen in the same apparatus. It's what happens when an opera singer scoops...which I'm afraid Fleming is famous for. It doesn't happen so much in this piece though. When she wants to, Fleming is really fantastic....and hence has been the Met's leading soprano for quite a while. DiDonato is no slouch though and I think Fleming knew she was going to have to stay on her toes in this one.
Um...what strange sounds? And I don't think you can call any opera singing "crooning". The two are rather mutually exclusive, and Fleming doesn't croon. And if you really wanted to like her, you'd do it.
They are the ugliest colors on them. The Gold washes her out and the green is just not a good color for Renee. Just saying.

Both wonderful instruments; the big difference, for me, being that Di Donato really knows how to act, where as Fleming is just so showy.
