Bears don't want to be bothered with us, any more than the feral cats in my neighborhood want me following them around. The bears where treadwell camped were notorious for being calm and non aggressive towards people, it had nothing to do with them "loving" or bonding with him...but in the end, I guess even the most placid bear runs out of patience.
Notice that this is a movie by Werner Herzog.... rumour has it that the whole 'documentary' is actually just a movie. The story might be true, but everyone in the movie - including 'Timothy Treadwell' - are actors. I did a quick search on Google and soon found out that Herzog made a 'mockumentary' called 'Incident at Loch Ness' only one year before making 'Grixzzly Man'.

I've met a few people in my life devoted to wildlife study and conservation, living close to the Adirondack Mtns., and they have a healthy respect for large carnivores and don't feel it would benefit anyone if they got eaten. This guy was reckless as well as plain crazy.
Hmmm, Not to be picky here, however I must point out that an incorrect diagnosis based on the severe lack of understanding or history of this late gentleman (Mr. Treadwell) is completely unfair to the medical profession. I am currently a third year resident in a behavioral health unit dealing with all sorts of mental illness. Bipolar is usually characterized as having "mood changes" or as most often called "phases" as you may recall.
Mr. Treadwell does not appear in any of his videos as "normal" and then in another video appear to have a different mindset. This would lead most medical professionals to quickly disregard any thought of bipolar disorders. Mr. Treadwell did appear to have some confusion on some occasions throughout his movie (which I did watch, twice) and it definitely appears that he was suffering from delusional beliefs (that he was a bear and the only one protecting them).
Mr. Treadwell also appeared to be suffering from thought disorders and personality issues, which would explain is inability to have social interaction and carry out normal daily activities, which is why he chose to live in the wild amongst the bears, where he felt most wanted and safest. Now in conclusion, Mr. Treadwell died doing what he loved to do, in reality is that really "crazy"?? Mr. Treadwell chose his own fate, which I am sure he never had any regrets.

As a 3rd year resident on a behavioral health unit, Mr. Treadwell did show signs of having Psychosis, but not because of him doing something different. Also, his friend/pilot is the one that initially found the horrific killing of Mr. Treadwell and his girlfriend. The likelyhood of anyone killing him where he was staying is remote. He took his own chances..

I agree with the sentiment of your post but I don't think he was insane. Had he just walked up to the first bear he saw and tried to hug it - yes that would show he was nuts. As wrong as he turned out to be he did have a set of rules he stuck to so as to mitigate the danger the bears posed. He knew they were dangerous, but just really fucked up when he stayed past the time the fish supply dried up.

I watched a lot of Tim's stuff, but I remember thinking when I first saw him around the Grizzly Bears that he needed to stick with the Foxes and other small animals, because you cannot become friends with a Grizzly Bear unless it's just a trained Bear like Bart was. To me, the most amazing thing about this whole saga is the fact that THAT guy actually had a girlfriend. As the saying goes, what on earth did she see in him?
This of course is the "conventional wisdom" in me speaking, because I KNOW what it was that drew her to him: his persona of hyper-confidence, belief in having unique insights, general cockiness (albeit being crazy)...and it drew her to the grave.

As a clinician it is apparent to me that this guy suffered from some kind of mood disorder, such as bipolar disorder. He definitely had lost touch with reality. I've met a few people in my life devoted to wildlife study and conservation, living close to the Adirondack Mtns., and they have a healthy respect for large carnivores and don't feel it would benefit anyone if they got eaten. This guy was reckless as well as plain crazy.

Hmmm, Not to be picky here, however I must point out that an incorrect diagnosis based on the severe lack of understanding or history of this late gentleman (Mr. Treadwell) is completely unfair to the medical profession. I am currently a third year resident in a behavioral health unit dealing with all sorts of mental illness. Bipolar is usually characterized as having "mood changes" or as most often called "phases" as you may recall.

Mr. Treadwell does not appear in any of his videos as "normal" and then in another video appear to have a different mindset. This would lead most medical professionals to quickly disregard any thought of bipolar disorders. Mr. Treadwell did appear to have some confusion on some occasions throughout his movie (which I did watch, twice) and it definitely appears that he was suffering from delusional beliefs (that he was a bear and the only one protecting them).

Mr. Treadwell also appeared to be suffering from thought disorders and personality issues, which would explain is inability to have social interaction and carry out normal daily activities, which is why he chose to live in the wild amongst the bears, where he felt most wanted and safest. Now in conclusion, Mr. Treadwell died doing what he loved to do, in reality is that really "crazy"?? Mr. Treadwell chose his own fate, which I am sure he never had any regrets.

I agree with you to a certain extent, Mr. Treadwell died doing what he loved. I also do not think because you are different, you are crazy. As a 3rd year resident on a behavioral health unit, Mr. Treadwell did show signs of having Psychosis, but not because of him doing something different. Also, his friend/pilot is the one that initially found the horrific killing of Mr. Treadwell and his girlfriend. The likelyhood of anyone killing him where he was staying is remote. He took his own chances..

Bears have greater sense of smell than bloodhounds, yes they can smell when a woman is menstruating. Tim obvously had serious mental issues. In his mind he believed the bears actually had a sense of what it was he was there for. I don't know how many of you have ever been that deep in the wilderness but strange things can happen - more so when you are isolated for any given period of time. He simply lost it.

Well actually Daniel Boone, wild animals do smell females OTR. Pay attention to the news during the Nov "rut" period for white-tail deer, every fall woman get attacked and chased by horny bucks. Bears have a better sense of smell than the best blood-hound, what makes you think they wouldnt smell her.... NO BRAINER. But camping on a bear trail got them killed, sure the bear smelled them way before he saw them. But what do I know, Im just a former AK hunting guide.

His girlfriend has nothing to do with their deaths. They were in the area too long into the fall after a very bad growing season. The bear were hungry and Timothy bacame the secondary food source that he always was to these animals. Amie just happened to be along for the trip.

Bears are intelligent animals. When they kill a human being they know it will result in a similiar response from game officers. They had plenty of fish to eat for which no reprisals would come. Tim mistook this as some kind of "love". The love dried up along with the supply of fish. Tim got his girlfriend kille along with himself and two bears.

I agree with the sentiment of your post but I don't think he was insane. Had he just walked up to the first bear he saw and tried to hug it - yes that would show he was nuts. As wrong as he turned out to be he did have a set of rules he stuck to so as to mitigate the danger the bears posed. He knew they were dangerous, but just really fucked up when he stayed past the time the fish supply dried up.

I watched a lot of Tim's stuff, but I remember thinking when I first saw him around the Grizzly Bears that he needed to stick with the Foxes and other small animals, because you cannot become friends with a Grizzly Bear unless it's just a trained Bear like Bart was. These Carnivores fight each other all of the time that should tell him they are not going to be friends with him. I actually think he started thinking the Bears liked and needed him around or something because that is just stupid.

He definitely took too many chances, but he also died in a way that he WISHED to, though his carelessness killed his girlfriend too. In fairness, he also did a great deal to help the plight of these majestic creatures, and should be recognized as one of the greatest conservationists of our generation. The bear that killed him and his gf was sick from disease and unable to compete for food with the other stronger and larger bears, and so resorted to an action not normal for the species. RIP Tim.

I belive that Timmothy fucked up and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and he new it, He was also suppose to be out of that area by a certain date and he returned to it when his flight got delayed to go back home. There is another documentary about grizzly's and a biologist from alberta taken somewhere in Siberia. It is a much better film about someone who actually knew what they were doing and wasn't a sociopath and is actually helping bears instead of trying to become famous by having a death wish while living in a protected area in Alaska....Thats right ...tredwell was in a Park...Grizzly man didn't seem to have many friends... in the movie the people are mostly actors
