I never thought John Buscema got the credit he deserved but I loved his work. I discuss the lack of recognition in a review I did of a collection of Avengers comics. To see the review do a Google search for ''squidoo essential avengers.''
@goldenrulecomics Did: Cool! Loved John's return to the Avengers in the mid-80s too, WHAT a comeback; together with Stern's scripting another magical run in my book.
JOHN BUSCEMA!!!! My Absolute FAVORITE Comic-book ARTIST OF ALL TIME!!! Definitely the Michelangelo of Marvel Comics. I hope someday that Marvel will put out Collections of his work on the Mighty Thor comics he did in the 70's ( with remastered coloring, just like Dark Horse comics is currently doing with his work on CONAN).
Yep, saw that card in the special remembrance issue of 'Comic Book Artist'. Hard to realize he disliked the other super heroes so much to draw, coming from a person who gave them so much credibility, grace, power, emotion and charm like in his Silver Surfer series and his early Fantastic Four and Thor work...
JOHN BUSCEMA WAS GOD! I also loved the buscema/chan conan the best, also chan studied with busce,a and when chan drew conan it was VERY similar in form and style to big john!
Combining the dynamism of jack Kirby and the realism of Neal Adams John Buscema was truly a GIANT in the industry. He could do it all. I don't think there was a Marvel character that wasn't drawn by him in the mid seventies!
I STILL have my hardcover copy of How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way that I bought when I was twelve years old. It's tattered, torned, and falling apart but I wouldn't trade it for anything. (Well, maybe for some original artwork from the big guy himself. LOL)
Ran across a piece of his original artwork (an early Savage Sword of Conan-splash page) in a Minneapolis comic book store in '88, but just couldn't afford the 100 bucks; strangely enough this exact same piece had crossed the ocean with me somehow, because a trader wanted to sell it to me at the Köln comic book fair over here in '93... for some 750 $!?
(Wonder where I'll see this piece of JB-artwork again - and for what price;-)
Everybody at Marvel Comics should have a copy of HOW TO DRAW COMICS THE MARVEL WAY by John Buscema. Another great tribute jmedia1. John Buscema was the only artist other than Jack "The King" Kirby that I likes on The Fantastic Four.
You're so RIGHT, MJ (especially nowadays...) Thanx! Happy You enjoyed it. Felt pretty the same way about FF-artists - until John Byrne blew me away on this title, too, in the early 80s.
Wow J.B. is such an extraordinary artist. His works should be remembered until the day comics are forgotten(never) alongside with John Romita Sr, Jack Kirby, Joe Simon, etc.

Thanks for posting. I'm also a big fan of Big John Buscema. It's ironic how much he disliked to do the work that made him a legend. RIP, Big John.

Chan must have been a big fan, too, judging from his solo Conan stories, yes!

I loved the work he did on the Savage Sword of Conan. And when Ernie Chan inked his pencils- they were breathtaking. Lots of great memories!

Same here; Conan really seems to have been one of his favorite characters. Which shows very much in SSoC!
