i used After Effects to do this. On a PC if you hold down Control (CTRL) when you scrub the timeline it'll play the audio (crashed the program a few times though so save often, and keep adding numbers to the saves)
on a MAC i think it's the Command key (apple)?
other than that you can stick to RAM previews and guess - if your timing is good enough you can get by with that
