  • when you act angry it doesnt sound natural..more like an angry anime..you should fill sound for cartoons..lol

  • Your're a Prick

  • 5:43 Ashton Kutcher voice

  • I preffer the Co3u actually the rode has more pops and actually sounds more compressed like a radio station.

You sound like an NPC in some japanese role playing game haha

  • Both of these mics kindda suck for serious professional recordings. I own a Samson CO1U and I think its an ok mic to start off with and its cheap, but recording quality is very average especially since the mic doesn't respond too well to eqing and compression.. You also have to work this mic really hard to achieve usable results.

I'm going to take the plunge and buy an Audio Technica AT4050 I have heard a lot of good things about this mic, even if it is at least 3x the price of these mics.

  • I think that high noise floor makes both mics sound terrible.

  • is it gud 2 rap on da NT1-A condenser mic

  • Nobody has actually asked as far as I can see (but I may have skipped a few comments), what interface and AD converter are you using? That can really affect the noise floor. Also if your gain is down low on the preamp and then the signal is boosted at the volume fader or EQ it will also add noise. Not to mention compression bringing up the noise floor...

  • I vote NT1A. Thanks for the comparison.

  • Are u using a gate to silence the crappy noise? ..You are in a noissy room, and other thing...you are using too much gain, when u yell, the signal gets saturated,,,

  • u suck

  • I notice this too dude... you have a similar range to me... I'm a rapper and I used to use a Samson C01U and I noticed it didn't pick up the depth in my voice... especially after compression and E.Q.... The Samson's have very good build quality though and I would recommend them for people on a low budget..

  • @youngcertified11 haha yeah, my bro needs 3 :P

  • everytime, when you speaking, your mic produces noise... What about SE reflection filter and 0 latency sound card, like Steinberg CI2+? Sorry dude, this is afwull

  • Why did blink when he said to'?-.-

  • rode nt1 a is better than that fuckin samson haha.. i use rode and it has a verry nice and verry good quality haha un like the samson, its sound like in the bathroom even u have a vocal booth .. I vOTE for RODE NT1a

  • Is your pop filter touching your Rode microphone... That's not only not gonna block plosives, but it's gonna vibrate your mic every second you talk to into it creating buzz. And using two filters does take away tons of ur clarity... it's not a method, it's just adding tons of unneccessary muddiness, and more work in production stages.

  • move the mic lower, like chest height, then you will get a better chest presence

  • vgccfthmvcikb

  • I think i hear a bit of noise when you talk. Used noise reduction and very very many boosts/compressors didn't you :b?

  • when u do the angry thing u sound like ashton kutcher

  • This ain't 'Chocolate Rain'.... Awkward :s

  • @

    ElKQEDA PUTANG INA MO!

  • useing the windscreen and the popfilter is a bad, bad, move. to argue about it,while complaining about your sound is...............................i'm trying to be diplomatic here

    willfull ingnorance

  • NT1A is much Clear and Warm,

  • Hi , could you please tell me which interface are you using with this mic?

  • oh god.. are you doing spoken emotion poetry.. dammit just rap lol

  • Why would you put the windscreen over the actual mic, as well as talking through the pop filter? Using both at the same time is ruining the purity of the sound signature. The pop filter alone is good enough. It sounds like you're using some lame ambiance sound filter preset. Also take off the windscreen, and use the pop filter only. No need for both. My NT1A sounds way, way better... maybe your preamp is thin. I dunno. NT1A is a much better deal, anyway.

  • @c0nfu53d Well, that's your opinion. My setup gets me hired. Thanks for the watch. :)

  • @Akumaryu I didn't say you don't deserve to get hired, of course. But using two pop filters in a row does actually ruin the purity of the sound.

  • @c0nfu53d I'm actually only using one pop screen. The other is a wind screen. They do two different things. Either way, everyone has specific ways in which they record. What might work for you may not work for other people. And just the same, what works for me might not work for other people. Also, as to the sound quality, this video was the first time I'd ever used the mic (8 months ago), so my settings have changed since to find the optimum set up.

  • @Akumaryu Same difference. They both protect against the same thing, but the wind screen is normally used for dynamic mics, such as an SM58. I can certainly tell you that the pop filter with the wind screen is completely unnecessary. They are pretty much both used for the same purpose, though with different types of microphones. If you have a setup for a pop filter with a condenser mic, why would you use a windscreen? I ask this out of curiosity. It is unnecessary. The NT1A isn't a dynamic.

  • @c0nfu53d I use the windscreen to protect from A) Sharp gusts of air, B) Contact damage in the event that it gets bumped. I move my mic around a bit, so I like to keep it protected. The pop filter is used to protect the mic from the plosives that the human mouth naturally produces. I also do a lot of yelling and screaming, and I have a tendency to spit. That sometimes finds its way around the pop filter, and I'd like to keep spit out of my mic.

  • @Akumaryu I hate to burst your bubble, but most people would agree with @c0nfu53ed.. And when I say most, I mean like 90 percent..

  • @Akumaryu u lost the argument just give up lol

  • @c0nfu53d you do realize that the pop filter doesn't actually do anything to the sound right? It was developed purely to get the musicians to stand further from the mic when singing

  • Uhh... of course the NT1A beats the C03U. The C03U is very lackluster. It's great for the price, but other than that... but the NT1A is a wayyy better deal.

  • The pop shield and foam will act as a bass trap, so it will remove some of the sonic qualities of your voice, I don't bother with them anymore. I have a Samson C03U and I have to admit it's a good mic but not very warm and a bit noisey, for the money it's excellent I also have an AKGC4000B, C414 a Shure SM7B some Sennheiser's, Audix etc. Problem is I'd rather have too much of something so I can cut it with EQ than not have enough and risk boosting other frequencies that might not be desireable.

  • @TheShadowKind Agreed. Anyone who's wondering, you can spend an extra $100 or so and get a mic (the NT1A) that's 3x better than the C03U (with a decent preamp, and if you've got even mediocre skills with audio engineering). I know for sure that the NT1A sounds much, much warmer and silker at the high end (sometimes it's a bit too bright cuz it runs a little hot, so get a preamp with a -20db pad on it and make sure it also has phantom power).

  • samson is better

  • Hey I have a question ! I really like your video.

Did you cut out the sounds when you weren't talking?

It look like a lot of cuts?

  • @AlexisGuietteRecords I didn't do any editing, really. The sound cuts out because of the settings on the program I was recording with. I had it cutting off any noise below -50 dB. I don't really use that setting anymore, though.

  • @Akumaryu That's a little stupid.. 'cause I wanted to know how hard the noice is when you don't speak..

  • @AlexisGuietteRecords Well, hind-sight is 20-20. But my studio is partially sound-treated, so the noise doesn't normally get above -50 dB anyway (something I've learned since putting up this video). The noise is really only as loud as you want it to be, since you can always adjust your recording volume and treat the area you're recording in to cancel out any unwanted sound.

  • @AlexisGuietteRecords Sounds like a noise gate. Noise gates cut out anything under a specified setting, ex: anything under 20db, 30 db, etc. will be cut out.

  • Thanks for the review. It sounded to me as though there was a lot more popping with the Rode. Glad you like it though. One question - why do recording artists use headphones when recording as opposed to listening to themselves through speakers?

  • @BF1GUN Well, the first reason would be so that there are no feedback issues. I wear headphones so I can hear myself the way my microphone is "hearing" it. Your voice doesn't sound the same to other people and on audio equipment as it does in your head when you talk, so listening to your voice live and while you speak is a great way to hear what you sound like. If you use speakers, there's a strong chance that you're mic will also pic up what your speakers are playing. That would be bad. XD

  • @Akumaryu Thanks for the explanation and for taking the time to reply.

  • @Akumaryu Thanks for the explanation and for taking the time to reply

  • @Akumaryu another way is so you can hear the music and what you said hear what you sound like so you can begain to lace it down

  • Hi guys, I just brought this mic but don't know how to wire it up. I don't have a pre amp but want to connect it to my PC...

    can I do this?

I have brought a adaptor which converts the mic wire to a small mic jack 3.5mm ,

will this work on my computer or do I need a pre amp?

  • i believe its different for peoples voice because i am a recording artist i have the samson and in studio they have the rode and the rode does make my voice seem more expressionless i have no idea why but it does and my samson don't it just gives me a clean sound to my voice i would put it down to the mixdown or the vocal for how the depth of your voice will sound more than the mic its self

  • @remixg2k You are correct in stating that it differs from person to person. And as I said in the video, my Samson served me well for four years. But as my range broadened and the types of roles I played began to vary significantly from where it had been previously, I needed a mic that allowed me to use that lower spectrum more. That is the reason why I chose to move to the Rode. It works better for me with a wider range of characters and types of voices. Thanks for the comment! :D

  • Rode nt1a i think it is a very good microphone.i had firs samson c03 but then i prefered to buy rode because of is warm sound and because it's noiseless.

  • Samson is clear and punchy. Rode is very warm (bit too warm on the low end) and has a permenant hiss. I'd go for the Samson for a professional-ish sound because it sounds a lot clearer. That's just my opinion anyway

  • @shocktk That hiss is the microphone picking up the other computer in the studio, which is normally off when I record. I have, since this video, also been able to adjust the compression and frequency cutoff of the microphone when I record, and it definitely compliments my voice much better than the Samson did. Thank you for sharing your opinion, though. :)

  • I recently purchased the Samson C01U Mic, which I think is a really good Mic, but it didnt really reach my expectations in sound quality wise, so I returned it and bought the Samson C03U Microphone. I personally think its a good Mic. I am a voice over actor for anime, I do voice overs on youtube (I have some vocie overs on my channel, but with my old headset mic). Do you think the C03U is good for anime voice overs? Thanks!

  • can you use this for recording singers? like people singing music? or is it just for voiceovers??

  • @jackmulop Works for singing, too. I'm not much of a singer, so I don't really know if the Rode is the best choice or not for that kind of thing. Mic's are a bit difficult as each one will treat different people's voices differently. It's all really a matter of experimentation.

  • what is the foam windshield that you used on the C03U, and where did you get it from?

  • Great mic comparison video it help a lot and i would have to say the rode sounded a lot better for your voice

  • that last line made me want to watch an anime. do you do a lot of anime voice overs?

also, the rode sounds better imo, your voice sounds brighter and more rich throughout the spectrum.

  • @yourwhiteshadow I am a working-yet-still-new voice actor, and I have done some anime work. Thank you for the compliment! I also agree that the RODE suits my voice much better than the Samson. Thanks for watching and sharing your input. :D

  • mark why you hiding behind the popshield lol

  • good work;)

  • @TechnologicalGaming Thank you very much for the compliment. I am indeed an actor, and I specialize in voice over, particularly in character acting for animation and video games. Again, thank you for the compliment. :)

  • Hi Akumaryu, where did you get the black foam cover on the mic? I want to use my CO3U to pick up everyone's voice in a large room, but the background noise from AC is very high. Would that foam thing help in this situation? Any suggestions on the mic settings? Thank you!

  • @matlabnewbie That is a wind filter also sometimes known as a wind screen. It helps eleviate the noise produced by breathing directly into the mic and helps prevent danger from sharp bursts of air, either produced by the mouth or from wind. It doesn't actually block out much background noise. Unless the AC is right over the microphone, the wind screen won't do much by way of blocking out background noise.

  • I can hear a lot of noise in the background, I don't know if that's from the room, or an RF noise, but either way someone did something wrong. Sounds like its stereo, so it might be dithering or the codec that you're using for the videos, but I don't think it's YouTube. It's really weird that the NT1A doesn't pick up low end because it has a tailored boost at around 100 Hz so there might be a low cut/hpf on your pre or on the mic switch, so check that out. Good vid though

  • @dangerale The NT1-A DOES pick up the low end. Better than the Samson does. That was the point of the purchase. Also, as stated earlier, that background noise is a computer fan running in the background. There's a computer in the studio that is usually turned off when I record, but it was running updates and had to be on when I had the chance to record the tests. Thanks for the input, though.

  • i have a nt1a i love it i need to find a pre

  • As far as picking up the lower registers of yur voice, doesn't mic placement have something to do with that? Would lowering the mic, not having directly in front of your face, help? Let me know what you think.

  • @Ozzman500 The problem with that is that the microphone only has a limited area in which it picks up sound in an optimal way. Especially with the Rode, if you move around too much, it greatly changes how the microphone pics you up, which is why I did that circle test. Thanks for the input, though. :)

  • Marko, is there are REALLY strong noise gate there? It's freakin' me out.

  • @TheDeathMetalNinja I'm not sure what exactly it is you're acting, but the noise gate was set to -42 dB because of that nasty hum in the background.

  • @Akumaryu Well the audio absolutely drops out as soon as you stop talking. So either it was a strong noise gate or it was edited.

Normally you still catch room tone when you're not talking, but it just dies out. Oh well...

  • @TheDeathMetalNinja Yeah, that's because of the noise gate. ^_^;

  • Damn text limit... anyway, the NT1 also has more of a radio show sound than a recording mic sound. That can be fixed with compression, but it's just something I noticed.

  • Dude. No offense, but why are you comparing two microphones that are $100 apart on price? Yeah, the NT1-A is a better mic, but it's pricer, too, so logic dictates that it's gonna be better anyway. I'm glad you have a new mic, Fairy Tail will benefit greatly from it, but it's just a bit unfair to make this whole comparison video.

Also, I'm sure you're already working on fixing this, but I noticed the NT1 has a lot more static and room echo picked up on it.

  • @Parabolic00 Actually, the background noise is because my dad's computer was on and running. You can actually hear it in both samples. >.>

But yeah, I'm comparing them for the sake of doing it. It's not like I'm trying to say which is better. I hope the NT1-A IS better, otherwise I just wasted $250. I'm asking which lends itself to my voice better.

Also, yeah, I need to futz around with compression and such to figure out the best settings.

  • @Akumaryu I know there was the hum with the Samson as well. It's just louder with the Rode.

In all honesty, I like how the Samson sounds better. Maybe it's the wind sock on the Rode, but it sounds muffled to me.

  • The NT1A sounds a lot clearer, in my opinion.

  • XD You can tell the difference ^-^ Congratz on the new mic, it sounds great XD

If you don't mind me asking, what program do you use to record yourself? just curious LOL X33

  • @hugcarzy101 I used to use Audacity (Which is an awesome free program), but since I got my new Macbook, I've been using GarageBand. Which is great because it has on-board compressors and junk, so I don't need too much external equipment. :)

  • @Akumaryu Ooooo~ That explains it haha I use Audacity now too, but i hear GarageBand is GREAT XD
