my friend told me that trn#999 sits in altoona and dosent go any where else besides, where its charger is lol! revolutionary concept, but hard to grasp
@TheDeadhead426 I would not worry too much about this engine. I seriously doubt you will see these thing's take over railyard's, especially the heavy shifting& hump railyard's. This technology is too new& not that advanced to take the part of a diesel.
Shunting operations are the most fuel-inefficient part of railways, and the most polluting, so this kind of loco it's really a good way to help the enviroment.
I hate to pick on an early effort like this, but a 1,500 hp switcher? That's not a whole lot of power for a locomotive. Running overhead catenary might be an eyesore, but you can get *way* more power. The Chinese have 13,000 hp electric locos. Overhead wire is also the only way high-speed trains are powered, and they really need the extra oomph.
Reminds me of a modernized CF7 locomotive. Although the nose looks like that of a later U-Boat model. Interesting, indeed. I like the green on the paint scheme. I can't wait to see it perform at Rose Yard next time I'm over that way. Or is it assigned elsewhere now?
This locomotive is too quite and looks really dumb. The nose is too short... I wonder what kind of horn it has... It better not be a third generation K5LA...
I want that podium!! Nice paint job on the loco, but that's about it though... The cost to recycle/dispose all those batteries in that thing is going to be expensive when they wear out. There goes alot of their profit margin.
@Intransitman That would be expensive to set up initially, but cheaper in the long run. The only drawback is it's a bit of an eyesore with an overhead wire system.
Very cool! Probably won't see it on any mainlines unless they're transferring it somewhere...maybe they'll build some more of them! Like the paint also...maybe some new colors in the future for NS or like RRlover said bring back the green!

@karlfey I agree with you, but it's awesome that it saves energy. Even though I LOVE the roar of GE, MLW, and EMD locomotives.

1.500 is plenty for a yard switcher.
