Harry Potter had a British director, British actors and a British author. I don't care who officially owns with money it was made brilliant and successful by British talent not American money... although the money certainly helped...
if a person is born in UKand all the key componants of that person are british eg where he lives (where the film is set), the language he speaks (the accent the actors have in the film)< but he wrks in US does that make him american , noooooooo.... ITS A UK FILM FOOLS...
Harry Potter is produced by Heyday Films (UK) and Warner (US). You can find this information all over the internet. Go to wikipedia, scroll down to country, and you will see: United Kingdom, United States. So everyone can stop shouting and swearing and go to his or her nice, warm bed.
I'm loving all the crybaby foreigners on this website XD Hey retards, this website is American as is the software for the computer you're using as is your PC.
American inginuity and entreprneurship rules motherfuckers!
@mrmiroes it just came out, so it will likely be included in next year's list. otherwise, i don't think it had enough time to build the amount of money those other films did.
rise of the planet of the apes was the best movie of 2011 and most people that have watched the movie should agree unless if your a huge harry potter or twilight fan.
wow lots of politics here does it really matter who or where the movie got made the point is it was made for everyone in the world so what is the problem?
This argument is far from settled. Harry Potter is like many films a joint-production between different countries. Trying to label HP as an American film due to partial rights is nothing but pure arrogance. It was very important for JK Rowling that her films be British, and claiming they're not because they got their funding in Hollywood is ridiculous.
@mieroth Warner Brothers does much more than fund the Harry Potter movies. They bought the rights from JK Rowling & then HIRED the British talent that works on the films. If Rowling wanted to keep the films 100% British, she should've sold the rights to a British distributor/production company like Hammer Film. On that note, The Woman In Black IS a British film. But w/ HP, Warners makes all the decisions, from who to hire to how to market the film to splitting the last film into 2 parts.
@BeyondTheTrailer: I didn't say Rowling wanted to keep the films 100% British. You're the one arguing the films are 100% American when you have no basis for this argument. You have a very narrow-minded view of the movie industry. Joint-productions between countries are extremely common. Trying to claim this film is fully American when this goes against the views of everyone involved from the original source (Jo) to actors, writers and producers simply shows that you have no concept of reality.
@Makoto03: Ever hear of the term "American exceptionalism?" It's the belief some Americans hold that their country should be judged on different standards than other countries. This is a typical example of that since Grace believes the fact that Americans are involved in this project overshadows anything else. According to Grace's logic IKEA is not a Swedish company at all since their headquarters are in the Netherlands. Yet logic like hers only seems to apply to the US. Odd that...
@mieroth Oh shut up you retard. Your IKEA example is completely irellevant when talking about Hollywood. The simple fact is this, do you really think that a Harry Potter or Bond movie could ever be a fully British production? Do you really think these movies could ever be made without US cash? Even if you tried to get the biggest European studios together they still wouldn't be able to afford to make a single Potter or Bond movies..
@themenaceanish Jk rowling wasn't intrested in making harry potter in to a film , she said she would only make it on her terms, so i highly doubt she begged any one.it was more like the warner bros begging her because they new they would get a massive profit out of it . Who are you calling a retard? you can't even spell Irrelevant properly.
@productions995 HA! Warner Bros were dead set on hiring Steven Spielberg as director with Haley Joel Osment as the lead character, set entirely in America. JK Rowling DID grovel to Warner Bros lmfao!
By the way you must feel so clever by pointing out a simple typo. Wow you must be some spelling expert am I right? LOL!
@themenaceanish It want no typo as you put it, you spelt it completely wrong. Aren't you contradicting yourself by saying that warner bros have all the power, yet can't get who they want to play the lead characters. You make no sense.
@themenaceanish It want no typo as you put it, you spelt it completely wrong. Aren't you contradicting yourself by saying that warner bros have all the power, yet can't get who they want to play the lead characters. You make no sense.
@themenaceanish: So basically you just proved yourself to be an enforcer of this arrogant American world-view. Would be funny if it weren't so sad. Now, your argument of "it doesn't count" is pointless if you don't say WHY it doesn't count. Which it of course does and you're grasping at straws here. =) Reason people get financial help from Hollywood is because it's easy to find investors there. Same reason people move production of Nike shoes to China. Are these shoes fully Chinese?
@mieroth Shut up retard, you're on your own XD The simple fact that JK Rowling had to grovel to Warner Bros over wanting to keep the setting and style of British just goes to show you where the real power lies.
Rowling is nothing special dude. She's entirely owned and financed by Warner now.
@themenaceanish: Or, rather, the fact that she insisted on a full British cast (and got her wish) proves the power she did have. Production companies do often have a lot of power but not with a series as popular as the Harry Potter series.
@BeyondTheTrailer I would disagree with that and say HP British-American film. The reason for me saying this is because J.K Rowling wanted the story to be kept as much to the book as possible. Little change was made. Yes Warner Brothers have the rights, casting power and decision on marketing (however Harry Potter was a popular book series before the film) but due to this, it doesn't make it purely and American production. The director and producer for this film in particular are English.
@300Effie@themenaceanish He's just stating a fact, albeit in an unlettered way. The Harry Potter movies ARE American productions, and property of Warner Bros.
There are some really sad and jealous Brits out there. We pretty much own all your entertainment you saddo poodles. What software are you using for computer dudes? Most likely Microsft and Apple, AMERICAN corporations. America is the world captal of entertanment. The rest of the world doesn't come close to our domnance.
But to the Brits out there, at least you have your precious Rowling XD
@TheBioLover Well if you're so jealous then why don't you big up your country? If you're so offended? Oh no wait you can't because patriotism is dead in England XD
Well it would be wouldn't it as you're theoretically the 51st state of America lol!
@TheBioLover Okay, this fight has gotten out of hand and mean - so let's settle it. Warner Brothers is campaigning for Harry Potter to get a nomination for the Best Picture Oscar. If it were a British film, that would be IMPOSSIBLE. Instead, it would have to be nominated for Best Foreign Film. So Harry Potter is an American film, period. However, in no way does that detract from the wonderful work done by the British talent that worked on this American film.
Without American financing you Brits wouldn't even be represented in the world. It's Aerican financing that somewhat puts you on the map. The Bond movies are way more American than British. Financed and produced by America.
Now go watch your shitty King's Speech you retard Brits. Oh no wait you won't! Because you watch Hollywood productions over your own British indie movies LMFAO!

@EvilBunniesandfaerie its not Brits are Americas poodles but harry potter part 2 is a american movie because it was made by a american production company
@EvilBunniesandfaerie Wrong opinion? You dumb ass brit faggot, you do realize you precious shitty JK Rowling grovelled to Warner Bros to make the Harry Potter in Britain and to be acted by Brits? Warner Bros owns the rights and if it wasn't for Rolwing's grovelling then Potter would have been directed by Spielberg and set in America.
Bond and Harry Potter are American, ownership is everything. You Europeans can't compete shit with us XD
@ReZourceman How about get the fuck off this website? You do know YouTube is American right? As is pretty much every website you visit.
Even your biggest stars and celebrities move here because it's shit in Europe like your precious Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan and that Russel Brand faggot. You hardly ever here about American actors or musicians moving to Europe, it's always the other way round XD
It's such balls that TF3 wasn't number 1, but I'm still more than happy to see it clinch number 2 in both categories. Plus when you consider that it and Harry Potter were in the billions, a loss by a few million isn't that bad.
Well, if you want to know why animation did so well worldwide? Because they are dub in several language. Like in Malaysia, Hong Kong, China etc, those animations are usually came with Cantonese/chinese dub, which feature some serious famous voice actors. Many would go into the theater twice just for the different dub alone.
Foreign films don't make the kind of money that Hollywood films do because foreign film industries don't have anywhere near the kind of money Hollywood companies do. Hollywood is able to release their films in foreign markets whether or not those countries demand Hollywood movies. This is the reason why I hate when Hollywood remakes foreign films because there is a lot of foreign talent that should be seen by more audiences but won't because Hollywood has more money.
@DaRunningMan boo hoo. You are such a cry baby. Foreign markets need to get better if they want to keep up with Hollywood. As far as the film industry goes, the strong live and the weak die.
@Makoto03 The fact that you think the solution is simply "foreign markets need to get better" shows just how simple minded you are when it comes to the movie business. The fact you think it's for a lack of trying on the part of those foreign film industries shows how ignorant you are when it comes to foreign film industries. And the the fact you used the cliche "the song live and the weak die" in this context shows how little you know about what you are talking about.
@DaRunningMan wahh..wahhh...i can't believe you are still butthurt. Hollywood knows how to make more successful films. you're just going to have to deal with it. i'll take Dark Knight over any artsy foreign bullcrap any day of the week.
I agree with @MarieFace harry potter; British Writer, British actors most production staff is english ... most americans came from english people moving to north america years ago anyway so ...
My Top Ten, in no particular order: Hanna MI4 Thor Rio I am number 4 Rise of the Planet of the Apes The Lincoln Lawyer The Help Colombiana Winter's Bones a special mention that Abduction, was probably the worse movie this year.
@92NycGirl Are you talking about the same Marvel Thor we all are? It takes place on a high-tech alien planet with Stargate-like transportation and 2011 Earth...what part of that is medieval?
I didn't love a lot of movies this year, but my favorite was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. My 2nd favorite would have to be Paranormal Activity 3. Can't wait for 4 next year!
Hey Grace, just been doing some maths and found that in the UK the top movie of the year wasn't an American/Foreign film.It was a British film, called the inbetweeners movie. It beat Harry Potter 8 and Twilight.Check out each total grossing in the UK for all the films:
The Inbetweeners Movie-£45,028,695
Harry Potter 8-£39,655,057
Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1-£18,485,855
Personally,I would recommend seeing the inbetweeners movie to you. It's available on netflix etc.
Its because Hollywood takes foreign ideas and rapes them so people dont read the books.
This works cause people tend to be lazy in this manner and will go see it.
However even though they are American movies they are foreign in subject matter and orignal source material.
Think about that and you will see why we dont bother competing with corruptywood and its rapefest mostly cause we would lose easy as people go see hollywood shit any day rather than what seems a bad movie but isnt.
i did see Transformers 3 and thought it was a lot better than the second. i even liked the part when the Leonard Nimoy Transformer quoted a line from Star Trek. i wonder how many people didn't get that... i laughed my butt off.
i saw the last two potter movies(which makes up one) even though i hadn't seen any of the previous movies and i still enjoyed it... Pirates 4 i wasn't a fan of at all
The audience votes with their tickets buying? Wouldn't that mean every single movie i ever saw in the theater was my favorite movie of that year, ultimately being my favorite movie ever? Good to know
EXCEPTIONAL update! Very well put together. Every time I think you've done the best you could do, you out-do yourself. The info on the difficult of finding foreign numbers was very interesting, as was the info about 3D / IMAX successes this year, & their impact on box office winners and losers. We complain about ticket and concession prices... but we'll pay double for whiz-bang benefits. :) Also interesting to see more sequels & fewer copy-cats over the years. Same result, but better sales.

OH OH OH YEAH HARRY POTTER!!!!!! :D WOOT WOOT
joshuapotter13 2 months ago
It's such balls that TF3 wasn't number 1, but I'm still more than happy to see it clinch number 2 in both categories. Plus when you consider that it and Harry Potter were in the billions, a loss by a few million isn't that bad.
MrBrysonification 2 months ago
Well, if you want to know why animation did so well worldwide? Because they are dub in several language. Like in Malaysia, Hong Kong, China etc, those animations are usually came with Cantonese/chinese dub, which feature some serious famous voice actors. Many would go into the theater twice just for the different dub alone.
MeJoshuatly 2 months ago
see if harry potter was number 1 on both lists why isnt it automatically best picture???

Foreign films don't make the kind of money that Hollywood films do because foreign film industries don't have anywhere near the kind of money Hollywood companies do. Hollywood is able to release their films in foreign markets whether or not those countries demand Hollywood movies. This is the reason why I hate when Hollywood remakes foreign films because there is a lot of foreign talent that should be seen by more audiences but won't because Hollywood has more money.
DaRunningMan 2 months ago 16
@DaRunningMan boo hoo. You are such a cry baby. Foreign markets need to get better if they want to keep up with Hollywood. As far as the film industry goes, the strong live and the weak die.
Makoto03 2 months ago
@Makoto03 The fact that you think the solution is simply "foreign markets need to get better" shows just how simple minded you are when it comes to the movie business. The fact you think it's for a lack of trying on the part of those foreign film industries shows how ignorant you are when it comes to foreign film industries. And the the fact you used the cliche "the song live and the weak die" in this context shows how little you know about what you are talking about.
DaRunningMan 2 months ago
@DaRunningMan wahh..wahhh...i can't believe you are still butthurt. Hollywood knows how to make more successful films. you're just going to have to deal with it. i'll take Dark Knight over any artsy foreign bullcrap any day of the week.

I didn't love a lot of movies this year, but my favorite was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. My 2nd favorite would have to be Paranormal Activity 3. Can't wait for 4 next year!

Thor went better than Captain America in AMERICA... just sayin. That's kinda fail...
kakashi37 2 months ago
I'm surprised by Thor that movie doesn't look good. I don't like movies that look like there made in the 14th century aka medieval times.

@92NycGirl Thor is set in current times. He's on 21st Century Earth for most of the film.

You should make a list of movies that you think were the best this year, Grace.
mysticryan1 2 months ago
Hey Grace, just been doing some maths and found that in the UK the top movie of the year wasn't an American/Foreign film.It was a British film, called the inbetweeners movie. It beat Harry Potter 8 and Twilight.Check out each total grossing in the UK for all the films:
The Inbetweeners Movie-£45,028,695
Harry Potter 8-£39,655,057
Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1-£18,485,855
Personally,I would recommend seeing the inbetweeners movie to you. It's available on netflix etc.
Thanks! :-)

I was right. Twilight IS mosre popular in the US than anywhere else.

i did see Transformers 3 and thought it was a lot better than the second. i even liked the part when the Leonard Nimoy Transformer quoted a line from Star Trek. i wonder how many people didn't get that... i laughed my butt off.
i saw the last two potter movies(which makes up one) even though i hadn't seen any of the previous movies and i still enjoyed it... Pirates 4 i wasn't a fan of at all
