The grinding holes were worn away from years and years of use. Some of them were not nearly as deep.
Yeah, Murray Canyon made a few pornos, but then tried to make it in mainstream film. I think he ended up playing Jack's buddy on Three's Company. Poor sap, should have stayed in porno.
Those Fan Palms are beautiful--some of those trees could be more than a century old. I love those old westerns where you'd see someone walking along one and the sound of rubble beneath boots. I think it's imperative we film a western there. You should submit some of these to the travel channel--exquisite, majestic and utterly compelling. And inspiring!
Beautiful video! I've been to Palm Springs a few times and I've been to the top of Mt. San Jacinto a few times too, but I haven't seen the native palm trees! That's something I've got to get to sooner or later!!!
You can get to San Jacinto from the tram, but I've always hiked up from the other side. There are supposed to be some palm canyons near Borrego Springs too.
Loved it...was there about 13 years ago - didn't have cam yet - lived in desert 14 years - but I think this was the first Oasis I'd ever seen...keep saying wanna go back...
You just took me there. Thanks
btw - do they still have the little trading post there? Bought a wonderful cd - just about worn it out it's so good. :)
Yep, the trading post is still there. Lots of interesting books, cds, and other cool stuff. I think the footage I shot is ok, but it still doesn't quite convey the magic of palms shooting out of dry rocks and the real feel of the oasis. Glad you got to see the real thing.
Thanks! You know, you may not be far off. A lot of those 50s sci-fi pictures were shot in nearby desert locations. Just a couple of hours from LA/Hollywood, and great barren landscapes; it's a natural!
Wonderful vid of a magical place...

Cool. But you live in a pretty cool desert location to begin with, so this wasn't new and wild for you, was it?

Grinding your dinner on stone leads to loss of tooth over time... But the Life style had to be simple...
I will attach this weekends Coulee footage...
Great vid Bro...

Loss of tooth? I prefer to think of it as a "mineral rich" diet.

Always the optomist he he he

Looked like you were the only humans there. And pretty amazing to think how they had to have gotten those holes drilled into those rocks.
Murray Canyon... wasn't he a p0rn star from the 70s??

Top of San Jacinto - is that the tramway ride? That's pretty amazing up there too. This area is just south of the city. A beautiful oasis.

Nice video tour, Ken -- some of the terrain looks like a movie set for 50s sci-fi.
