When I was about four years old (in 1939) I played and marched endlessly to this very record. The flip side was "Fairest of the Fair," which I didnt like so much. Our phonograph used cactus needles, which came in packets of 25 or so and were good for about ten plays before they needed to be changed. After that came steel needles, which were good for around 100 plays, as I recall.

Seems pretty fast. If someone were to march to this, I'll just bet they were really stepping out.

actually sousa did do a recording session in 1931 i believe before his death. i have a recording of it.

A great classic, shame Sousa himself would never conduct for a record, but I guess this is as close as we can get.
