I'm sorry Joy your wrong. He knew what he was doing and got it right. Terrence Malick isn't some uneducated hollywood hack, look him up and you'll see. There is a lot to learn from this films.
@Kingshadowhigh I agree with you here. The main obstacles that viewers will find when watching this film is 1) assume they can arrive and be 'entertained' 2) dealing with postmodern narration and 3) assume that they need no prior knowledge concerning the book of Job or understand the theological importance of the film's namesake, "The Tree of Life". When these assumptions are left unexplained, it is sad to hear this film declared as 'stupid' or the like.
I watched most of this movie yesterday with my family. I say 'most' because my family could not tolerate the pretentious redundancy of the non-linear narrative and begged to not have to sit through it. I really wanted to like this movie; I waited for months for it to be released to DVD because no theaters in my area showed it. I get what Malick was trying to do with this but he missed the mark by a long shot. The cinematography is gorgeous, though.
"The Tree of Life" was a very different movie. But there was something strangely captivating about it, very beautiful. AND I could listen to Jessica Chastain talk all day long, she has such a calming voice and very pleasing to the ears!
