Here's an idea, let's break every damn window and feed that fire the air it needs to blow thru the roof. Busting every window is not the answer, and I guarentee that fire would have been knocked down had they not broke every window.
Er, I am no firefighter or expert, but that thick smoke you see thats billowing out the roof at 2:45 and out the first floor soffit just seems to indicate to me that the fire is nearby, its NOT small, but starved for oxygen, and the first bit of air it does get when it burns through whatever is keeping it in check, its going to accelerate, and accelerate extremely quick..
hey good work evergreen. u guys are a good group of men (and women). Im from a small town smack dab center of Illinois and i went to the U of I with their cadets at the time. pretty good group of people learned a lot from their crew. if any of u went send me a message and see whats up.
Evergreen Pk FD i think is pretty big on keeping fires very simple, such as like if theres a fully involved residential structure fire that should be at least upgraded to a box, EP keeps it a full still they send like their entire shift/ apparatus to these things 2 Engines a truck there Snorkel, and 2 Ambos are usually what they send to any stills but this fire should have been upgraded to a Box and a RIT team should have been assembled btw 94th and Springfield is right by my ex gfs house lmao
I saw this fire last year people started backing up when they saw fire swarming from the roof but noone was killed great job to Evergreen and oak lawn firefighters for stopping that blaze.
wrcatfish that was the stupidist thing i ever heard... you need to vent, and if you were taught anything different in your fire accademy they taught you wrong dude.
its not rocket science, you get in there and put the wet stuff on the red stuff. no hole is needed in the roof if you have a good interior attack. and if you cant stand the heat, get out of the way, quit showboating and do your job.

your comment is completly stupid you have no clue what the hell you are talking about verticle ventelation is a vital part of fire ground operations so know what the hell you are talking about before you open your mouth
Ok you guys have a ladder truck or what ever it is all set up, why didn't the cheif or captain or who ever get the ladder truck manuevered to start hitting the roof on the clip?
the fire obviously isnt in the attic yet, hence the venting, to pull the fire to where its going to go anyways. with the fire burning in the walls where you cant see it, its going to make its way upwards to the attic
It's so easy for some of you to be monday morning quaterbacks!! It does look like they were doing overhaul! If you didn't notice, they were pulling the ceiling. If you knew what you were talking about you must obviously know that fire will travel through the walls and sometimes is not found right away. Regardless of what anyone will tell you, firefighting is not an exact science and EVERY fire dept. will lose a structure now and again. If you were not there dont make degrading comments!
it's easy to sit here and see part of a video and think "I would have done it differently" - You've been on fires "like this," you weren't on THIS fire. If you are in the service, you should know, EVERY fire is different! There are some consistencies, but there are a lot of things that can hide or change in an instant. Unless you were on THIS fire, and know of something done wrong, you really have no idea what happened or why ...
true, firewolfranger , I agree,it needs to turn off comments before millions of nitwit silly people become asking "why they not start dousing the roof from ladder at 4:45?"
that was a terrible way to handle the fire... when the video started it looked like they should have been finishing up operations and doing overhauling and then they lost control. i have seen more serious fires get handled quicker and easier than this which was originally a small easy job. and i dont know what up with the one commenter but you dont need a tower ladder on all fires. nice video Todd. if u need a helper send me a comment or get in touch with me you know my dad Jim from engine 123
no, i quit for college. i left school mid october and am starting emt school and training for a volunteer fire dept at the end of the month. hopefully be in paramedic school by fall. easiest way on the job.
It was a balloon framed house. Fire started in the basement and traveled up the vacant spaces into the attic and roof. Finally found it running of the pantry walls by that time it was already into the attic.
you can only do so much when fire is in the walls. remember, its "packrat conditions". these are hard fires to fight if you have to chase it in the walls.
@7089540230 Not from Chicago area, what is a still box?Cleveland/Akron area uses different terms,we use the term box/2,3,4,alarm/mutual aid box..but those are common....but i dont believe Ive ever heard the term "still box"....
W.S and N.Palos Also have TL- but would be useless. your saying on this mutual aide system, that none of those could supply a TL? The one thing you should note is that while also saving lives and looking out for your crews safety is first priority of the job, saving property is second. and the way this fire was handled, could have been better and the property could have been saved, even if you just called the TL and not raise the alarm, you would have had a better chance at saving the property.
Its with in side of whats called MABAS(Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) EGP is inside of MABAS Div 21 which consist of Bedford Park (where you TL 704 would come in, and have aprox. eta of 10 mins or less from its location on 73rd and oak park),Burbank, Bridgeview,C.Stickney, Chicago Ridge(TL-6504..and which might have gotten there in less the 5 mins due to the fact that it is right of 100th and ridgeland), Roberts Park (which also has TL-305) Hometown, oak lawn, N.Palos, summit, w.springs worth.
just giving my thoughts on the way whole fire was taken care of.
i think the ISO officer and RIT team did a tremendous job on that evacuation of the FF before the engulfment. on the contrary the Incident Cmdr., i feel should have called for a mutual aid and raise the alarm after the engulfment. as we see one line wasn't it, if i was in the Cmdr. Shoe's id call a 2-11 and get a tower ladder with in the MABAS Div ( which i believe the closest would be either Bedford park or oak lawn possibly)
espshredder69 there was no need for a 2-11 it was a house fire handled perfectley, get it house fire not a commercial building and oaklawn has no ladder truck not on next would be bedford you moron
Oh, maybe I am thinking of a different one int he same area. I live just east of the EP golf course on the Chicago side. Most of your videos are incidents too far for me to chase...

vertical vent isn't always a vital part at a fire but on this it was.

ventilation is a vital part but you dont always have to use vertical u can use ppv or hydraulic.

why was you on the darn roof to start with no need to vertical vent all the windows was broke and the fire wasnt there yet .

it doesn't matter if the fire is there yet, you vent to avoid the buildup of superheated gasses to prevent flashover
