The person on keyboards is Roger lavern Isaw a doco on tv and heappeared titled Annd e a real life BRITISH program and he had a medical condition tund out to be prostrate cancer and it was caught too late He was relating to staff his fame and the programe closed with the Tornadoes hit Telster
I've been writing a screenplay about a magician who plays for schools in the south during our turbulent times and the opening song while he drives his black Lincoln Continential is this song. Great moving song as the credits roll by. Look for it: It's call LITTLE RED RILEY.
I remember them doing this, IIRC it was filmed for German or Dutch TV in about 1993, the TV station didn't want the 5th member of the group (female vocalist Lynn Alice) to appear so she had to stay home and the band played live on the show but the original 1962 recording was dubbed on afterwards.
He was on Channel 4's 24 Hour Emergency this week complaining of chest pains.
He seemed a top bloke (sort of an older Pierce Brosnan), hope he's ok now - they let him out without any complications though. At the end of the programe it mentioned he's doing a new album and changed his name to Franz Franklewurter (or something).
@fastra I'm watching that right now on 4od. I had to youtube him once he'd mentioned it. He seems pretty cool indeed. Certainly bigged up his umbrella to the nurse, lol.
You can really see Matt's playing style in his dad through the way his dad handles the guitar, the way he plays the notes/chords, and the way he smiles/laughs while he plays, not to mention that this song definitely reminds me of the Knights of Cydonia intro
This is being mimed to the original and Ritchie Blackmore was never a member of The Tornados, only original member playing here seems to be Clem Cattinni on drums
I always got pictures of Sputnik, the cold war,Buddy Holly's crash, and embarking on a new world(the sixties) hearing this song.what year was this from exactly...I was born in '59
I use to listen to this song through a crystal set when i was 10 years old. I bought the Lp and still listen to it today. A true classic by any measure.
Sorry jrgboy, you're wrong, telstar 10000 is correct. Joe Meek's house band were The Outlaws Billy Kuy (Lead) Richie Blackmore did'nt arrive until around 63 and Chas Hodges played bass at that time. If you look for John Leytons 'Johnny Remember Me' that was the original line up. I know all the line up and Bobby Graham was on drums not Clem he came a short time after with the Tornados even thogh in the movie TELSTAR Clem playes on JRM. I have an email from Clem saying it was Bobby who did JRM.
The recording was made by Joe Meek using his regular session musicians including Geeof Goddard & Richie Blackmore, the group was formed after the song became a hit.
Joe's session musicians Alan Caddy, George Bellamy, Clem Cattini, Roger LaVern & Heinz took the name "Tornados" so they could be Billy Fury's backing band and so they could release their first single "Love & Fury" in April '62. Telstar was their second single.
According to the Book 'The Joe Meek The Telstar Man' the only musicians on the original record are Geoff Goddard, Clem Cattina, Ritchie Blackmore & Chas Hodges
Obviously mimed to the original single recording. This is 150% identical in every respect, and there is no way a live performance could replicate the rudimentary Joe Meek recording techniques so faithfully. Rather pathetic really.
@MuseLp967 george bellamy is not in this clip here the guitarists are davey graham and dave harvey, bip wetherall on keyboards and of course the legendary clem cattini on drums
You mean like SOOO many of 1960s performers they are FRAUDS - Get this we actually have people pretending to be the drifters and the four tops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It would be impossible for the original Tornados to perform any of their hits now as, sadly, two of them died in 2000.
Heinz in April of that year at the age of 57 and Alan Caddy in August at the age of 60. George Bellamy, now aged 68 (father of Matthew of Muse) has retired. So it is necessary to have some replacement personnel.
So Clem, now 69 and Roger LaVern aged 70, are the only two still musically active. I am just so pleased that they are still performing the wonderful Tornado sounds.

This performance of Telstar is by Clem Cattini's current group "TORNADOS NOW". Clem, the drummer, is the only original member performing in this video, so George Bellamy (father of Matthew) is not in this video.
