  • As you strike the piece an angle of 1-2 degrees will make a huge difference. Try it.

  • @forexpipz OK, thanks for watching, had plenty of success so far.

  • hey collin may be a stupid question but where can i get a chopping block

  • @OutDoorNoob1994 Like my stump? If you go to a recently de-forested area there should be plenty of good stumps about.

  • You had me sold on the Husqvarna Hatchet, but now I'm wondering if the fiskars will be adequate. How do you feel they stack up to each other?

  • @pmhauge Well they are both good, I prefer the Husqvarna for its traditional looks. The Fiskars is a tough and durable tool though so its hard to say which is best.

  • @ColinOutdoors Thanks! I figured you might say as much, as both seem to be very capable tools. I'm trying to weigh my first real hatchet purchase carefully, but I think the Husqvarna is going to win. Folks on my side of the pond seem really obsessed with using big knives in the role that a hatchet was meant to fill, and while I can see their logic, and I don't feel there is anything wrong with it given how well built these big choppers are, I think hatchets need to get more attention.

  • @pmhauge Yeah I agree my friend, hatchets to me are worth their weight, very capable tools. I have enjoyed using mines alot so far.

  • do they make that hatchet a bit bigger to me it would be nice

  • @killlerr2 Yeah I think they do, not sure if its 19inches or so but they do have them, thanks for watching my friend

  • Awesome video, just got my fiskars hatchet today. Ironically it had the top tip broken off too and a little indented in the middle of the blade. Dad used his belt grinder and fixed it right up and took off some of the black coating so now it had an odd pattern lol. Sharpened it some more with my DC4 and it cuts paper pretty well :D

By the way i love how you respond to every single comment, shows you care :D

    Cheers from canada.

  • @TryingTBHumble Thank you so much my friend. I am glad you got your Fiskars Hatchet, shame about the broken tip, your Dad and you did an excellent job re-grinding and sharpening it. I have the DC4 too :-) its a great sharpening stone :-)

  • @ColinOutdoors Oh and something i noticed. If you have a mora with a synthetic handle, you can stick it into the bottom of the hatchet and get enough extra space to use 2 hands. It doesn't stick insanely well, but if you push it in enough it'll stay decently in. The blade shouldn't dull either as only the back of the knife should be in contact of the hatchet if you use it properly.

A longer handled axe would do better for sure, but it's always good to have options :) Have a great day!

  • @TryingTBHumble Thats a great idea about the Mora, I will be sure to give it a try :-) Thanks my friend, take care

  • @TryingTBHumble What model of Mora knife were you able to fit in the handle?

  • @Penaloza805 I fit my mora bushcraft triflex, wasn't a perfect fit, but it does somewhat fit.

  • @TryingTBHumble Thanks for the reply, I was thinking of getting a mora 2010 also known as the mora bushcraft forest, if you have any experience with that knife do you think it would fit?

  • @Penaloza805 They seem nearly identical. Probably a couple differences here and there, but no matter what, if you buy a mora, you've made a great deal!

  • @TryingTBHumble Thanks man.

  • Good video

  • @QualityKnives Cheers my friend :-)

  • God review on the capabilities of the axe, I was out with my Fiskar axe yesterday and was getting really good results too, I just love it, and at the price i paid for it (£17.99) great value for money, dont be put off by the plastic handle as I used it in January this year in temps of minus 10 with no sign of shattering, Keep up the good work Col.

  • @MrNishi Thanks my friend, yeah its a strong beast, performed great last winter for me, hope it does the same this year. Wow 18 quid you paid? Thats a great price, where (if I may ask) did you find it for such a good price?

  • @ColinOutdoors Homebase in the sale

  • @MrNishi Nice one my friend, I will need to have a look :-)

  • i meant great vid. keep them coming.

  • Have you been watching ray mear's axe guide video? :3

I wish I lived in a place where there where enough trees to justify an axe.

  • @agun17 Cheers my friend, I like the Ray Mears Axe videos , really good,

  • Great video!

I am glad to see someone using an axe to split wood and not battoning with some knife! Great job!

  • @Diopterman Thank you my friend

  • awesome vid colin, keep up the great work!

  • @1978graham Thank you my friend

  • Colin, sharpening an axe is pretty straight forward. Get yourself a Lansky Puck sharpener. It is made for sharpening axes and other large blades. On my Fiskars axe (28" splitting axe) there is a visible bevel on the edge. Starting with the dark side of the stone match the bevel of the axe to the stone and maintain it while going in a circuilar motion up and down that edge. Switch edges of the axe, repeat. Then repeat the whole process with the light coloured side of the puck.

  • @bwillan Got the Lansky my friend, thats what I use to sharpen my axe, I thinks it a great sharpening stone and sounds like you have great experience with it as well.

  • That one almost took out your camera! Good to see your gloves are on, and eye protection too. Those bits fly pretty fast.

Careful with the hand motions! (4:41)

Why don't you try standing the wood up vertically and chop it, like a normal ax swing? Start it upside down, then flip it and give it a bash, mate.

You're the best Col, more vids, please!

  • @sabr686 Cheers for the top tips my friend, I will give it a try next time :-)

  • @sabr686 Lol cheers Sabr, yeah it did look a bit dodgy at 4:41. Thanks for your continued support my friend, have a great weekend

  • How does it stack up against the Husq?

  • @LeonRFpoa A bit different it doesn't need as much maintenance as the Huskie. I tend to use the Fiskars for more heavy duty work

  • lol 4:41

  • @Flash9590 Lol, thanks for watching

  • Good Video Colin These are Good axes for the price and very light, Ideal for bushcraft and around the garden.

  • @hakkamantis Thanks my friend, I agree, great axes for the cost and weight

  • Great video Colin

Which do you prefur a knife for batoning or an ax?

    take care!!!

  • @asg00001 I like them both, I think a knife is easier to control but for large piece of wood a axe or hatchet does a better job for me personally. Thanks for your support as always, its a pleasure to be your friend

  • Col on fire, 2 vids back to back!, nice one bro, when the first set of wood goes flying i was wait'n for the braking glass sound and your neighbour to yell out in the backgrond "OI" HA=] good chop chop vid esp with a "used" edge on the Fiskar

  • @TheDishD Lol. thanks Dishy, yeah one piece ended up in the bushes, couldn't find it and the other ended up 10 ft away, fortunately it didn't hit and break any glass :-) and one more video on the way today :-)

  • @johnlowengard Cheers my friend, I agree, a knife and saw can be more effective for smaller pieces of wood, the Becker BK2 looks to be a great knife.

  • Colin thanks for this great video again man i really appreciate that:)

  • @BuschTukkerMan Thank you so much Busch, I really appreciate your support and encouragement as always, take care

  • Hey Colin how sharp do you keep your hatchet? I just bought one and its just one from a local store and it was dull. Should I put a really sharp edge on it?

  • @clubtc05 Well it doesn't need to be razor sharp but I found that I can get this Fiskars sharp enough to cut paper. Thanks for watching my friend

  • really likeing the vids colin nice one mate i have a fiskars type billhook great for making sticks or pegs

  • @sambowilki Thanks my friend, yeah seen the Fiskars Chopping hooks in the DIY stores, they look very useful
