in my opinion, yes, namahage is come from "--hagi". OIHAGI means handit in japan. so i think hagi/hage means handit. and their mask is called ONI japanese most popular ogre. Oni have red and blue faces, strong power, and curly hair. the mask is not look like caucasian face? probably, drifted man be handit.
i don't have opinion of what is NAMA. namakemono can be. drifted man may live freely.
At the Namahage Museum in Oga (way out in the country), They had a hilarious video of Namahage terrorizing the kids and drinking sake in one of the viewing rooms. It was definitely my ideal image of Namahage antics. I will never forget that trip.
if i saw one of those people coming at me i would beat the hell of of it

Wow, they are similar to the Italian Mamuthones (from Mamoiada municipality).

yes, strangely, the european carnival and japanese namahage have many common points.
they are too similar for chance...
there is a possibility that the european who drifted to japan began.
but it is unknown that how namahage was begun.

Just a coincidence, maybe. The world is full of legends of scary creatures\demons\demi-gods\kami.
The Namhage's name result from:
namenamoni (the red spot that shows when you sleep close to the fire)
> NAMAkemono (lazy)
> namaHAGI (the creature\demon that kill the lazy people)
=Namahage

"Oni have red and blue faces, strong power, and curly hair. the mask is not look like caucasian face?"
Oh I see,the Japanese in the late Tokugawa shogunate, called people from the west "Red demons"
("hagi" is from "hageru"
"nama" is from the word "namakemono"
namahage: the name of the oni\demon that skin alive the lazy people. Mizuki Shigeru explains this in his book about japanese monsters).
attela666 3 years ago
thank you. i will try to read the book^_-

The title of the book is: 水木茂るしげるの日本妖怪めぐり (Mizuki Shigeru no Nihon Yōkai Meguri).
Good reading ;)
