Loved the series. But rather obvious it was going to get the axe. A show where many of the supposed good guys are more morally bankrupt than the bad guys. Good guys wipe the minds of folks who volunteer without knowing what they're getting themselves into, get send on life-threatening missions without being aware of it . . .
If they were aware, they'd never volunteer and just choose to do jail time instead. You can't have a show where most of the fans hate most of the regular cast.
I can't agree. You get some teenager or someone in their early '20s who made a mistake, got caught, facing prison time. Walk up to him, tell him that everything will be taken care of. No prison time, no permanent mark against them that will ruin their life, no mark against them that will prevent them from getting a good job. Tell them about a vague experiment. No details. Make it seem easy. They're young and inexperienced, they say yes. Loved Alpha until they made him a lunatic.
@NGMonocrom i dont know abt that thing with alpha, he was always a lunatic. Adelle showed them around the dollhouse so they could see what they would be like and explained to them that they would be programmed. its their fault for assuming that it wont be for anything dangerous or something. It was completely hypocrytical when Mellie or whatever her name was freaked out about them using her body to kill someone. HELLO! she sold them her body to do whatever they wanted with it.
Safe to say, as both of us are fans of the show, we both saw the episodes where the speech was given about signing up for the program in order to avoid jail-time. Killing and being used as basically sex slaves wasn't mentioned during the recruiting process. If the dolls were older adults, I'd completely agree with what you're saying. But they're young and inexperienced. I'm sure they thought that some type of secret experiements would happen. But not to be sex-slaves and killers.
@NGMonocrom they said they would program them to do whatever they wanted. It should have accured to them. im not saying what they did was ethically right. it wasnt. far from it. But what made the show interesting was that the good guys werent good, they just werent bad. At least that is how it appealed to me. Topher and Adelle were the best characters because even though their morals were greatly compramised they still had some sense of right and wrong
So... I´m from Spain and i just watched the ending episode... And i´m exited but at the same time confused... That's all? 1.- When alpha is friend of echo? 2.- Alpha true identity? 3.- So paul is in the echo head... Some day they will go out to the surface (echo, prya, tony t and the others)... I don´t know, i luv that show but the last episode put me like OMG! 4.- and last how the people got corrupted if they destroyed rossum???
This ep wasn't all good. But, it was so rushed. They probably wrote the whole ep in like a couple of days. But the series is 5 stars. Thanks Dollhouse for always being your best
yeh, echos a doll forever and the ending is sad because she was all alone after paul died cause noone can really understand her, so after she put paul into her mind hes "alive" in a way in her, so since she wouldnt fit in with the normal world anyways after it goes back to normal she is happy being in her own mind with paul forever : (
OMg i cant belive they cancelled it it was going to good, poor echo does that mean shes in her mind forever and shes just in her pod forever ? & the dollhouse is Closed 4 Good ?
It didn't work mainly because Joss is good at creating jokes and this show lacks of humour and puch lines ! It was too serious and boring ! Some episodes were good or even great, but could be WAY BETTER !!!
I feel sorry for Joss. Every show he creates gets thrown to the wolves, even though their concepts are so unique. No wonder he didn't want to come back to television. But atleast he brought us dollhouse. :) even if it was short lived.
Just another example of an intelligent, well written, quality series not getting the deserved attention. There were about three substandard episodes at the beginning of season 1 (if you compare the unaired pilot with the one that did air, its obvious this was due to network meddling). Once Joss was able to get into the story he wanted to tell, almost everything was brilliant. I shudder to think how close Dollhouse came to not getting this phenomenal second season.

In my opinion the whole Dollhouse concept got derailed in the pilot when Joss started trying to make excuses for all the reasons the Dollhouse isn't just a high tech brothel. That's what it looks like. That's what it sounds like. And that's the only reasonable use for it. Everything else just seemed stupid and contrived. Once they conceded that battle, the whole show worked much better. I just don't think Whedon was as good for this show as people think. Even if he did create it.
Joss didn't make excuses, he tried to build upon the material which he started on. The only reason why it seems sketchy is b/c of the limited production time they were given for the 2nd Season (after Epitaph I). It seems a bit more ragged now that you look at it all, only because they were suppose to be around 5 seasons. Also the Dollhouse isn't suppose to be just a high tech brothel, the only reason why it seems so, is b/c it's main focus is "what people need", and a lot of people have "needs".

I don't think all the blame for Dollhouse can fall on Fox, even if it's the trendy thing to do.
I mean, the first few episodes were really bad. And if Joss had his way, from all the reading I do, they would have continued to be bad. All the awesome thriller action that has made this season so great was, seemingly, at the protest of whedon who keeps lamenting that he wanted to focus on the "phychological aspects" of the engagments which were CLEARLY the worst part of the show.
Joss DIDN'T have his way for the first 5 episodes and when he did for episode 6 and on the show got better so I don't get what your saying when you sat "And if Joss had his way, from all the reading I do, they would have continued to be bad."
Whedon must of groaned when they told him that they would give him the Friday timeslot when he got the show greenlite. It really is such an impossibly hard time timeslot to be successful. He must of been really desperate to get this show on the air, even going back to Fox that completely screwed him over with Firefly. Dollhouse's finale may be the last Whedon TV we ever see if he really intends to just broadcast his creative juices through the internet only. Unless the Buffyverse returns.
Actually, there was 27 episodes. Both Epitah One and Epitah Two count as 13th episode of their season and then, there was the original pilot which is on DVD.
it's not really fox's fault - no one watched the show. even now, not too many people (by the channel's standards, because millions is a lot to most) watch it. it was panned. even fans of joss whedon said take it off the air. i have no idea why everyone hated it, but truly it's not fox's fault alone.
well they could've taken into account, i think it;s tivo ratings? or something like that, the rating's went up by like 50% the episode after it was cancelled or something, they just don't count them despite most people watching online etc these days. often for shows in the uk they also include online viewers from official sites which is a shame in dollhouse's case that the same could not apply :(
what makes me mad...is that Dollhouse got canceled...yet Human Target is going to be on the air?
Am I not the only one who thinks that show looks ridiculous?
...I'm probably going to cry like a baby in two weeks...Epitaph One ruined me, and Epitaph Two is going to have characters I actually care about, on screen, IN DANGER,( apparently). I'm gonna be a wreck.
Or maybe they're not keen on dumbass plot holes, contrivances, sloppy world-building, over-used tricks (lovers being split up by violent death) and silly motivations.
