  • Del Potro was spanking the absolute shit out of the ball!

  • Shit Del Po could won ... And who knows maybye final too. It would be great FO and USO in 2009. Pity...

  • nice gesture from delpo

  • the piece of shit was screaming so loudly that day when encouraging himself...

  • Federer vs Del Potro FO '09 Final

  • @IricForset This was a semi? Wtf is wrong with you?

  • @addy72222 Because this was the highest quality match in the entire tournament and probably the 2nd most important one. The first being Nadal vs Soderling.

  • I don't think many people appreciate just how deep Federer had to dig to win this match. Of all his 16 Grand slam titles, I would rate this French open as the best achievement

  • whoever said clay is a slow surface didnt watch this game...

  • Great credit to del potro never givin up, good future ahead 4him. Federer...well, just a true legend :)

  • WHOA that forehand at 3.51 was insane from Del Po great to see him back on the court he has an incredible spirit!

  • one of the few big men who can volley well :]

  • this is some of the best tennis ive ever watched from Fed

  • @0OlIS5 Eh, I don't think it was one of Federer's better matches in terms of great tennis being played on his part. Del Potro was just so aggressive the entire match which didn't allow Federer much breathing room as you can see how often he was on the backhand trying to just slice the ball back on both his forehand and backhand. In terms of mental strength and winning the right points, this is certainly up there for him on the other hand.

  • @AllGenreMusic knowing what was on the line, a shot at RG Final without Rafa, made it impressive. Similar to when he played Haas, this entire match was played in the clutch.

  • Man Delpo just trashed that ball at 3:50

  • Roger's parents are very respectful people. They don't like applauding Roger's opponents' errors. I remember reading that Roger's friend cheered at an error, but Roger's mom told him to pipe down because it's rude to cheer for that kind of point. Roger's really lucky to have such grounded parents.

  • @unowen727 True that, Nadal's camp have respect, Djokovic's don't even know the meaning of that word, especially his dad.

  • i bet US 2009 ws fed's gift of thanks of delpo! ;-)

  • Comment removed

  • Fed obviously likes and respects Del Potro.

  • at 3.59 roger was like: wtf??

  • At the US Open, he had his sweet revenge, ownage but his injury was a downsider for him

  • del potro only chance ever to win the french open

  • @1817139 he's only 21...

  • @rogerfedererfan98 nadal is too gd at the french open never been beaten there when he has been fully fit

  • @1817139 i bet you that nadal won't be able to play tennis more than 2 yrs... nadal is not unbeatable ... believe me... and i bet you that nadal won't take the next year's french open... ROGER IS THE BEST! C'MON ROGER!!! GO FOR THE 17TH!!!

  • @rogerfedererfan98 has federer even beaten nadal at the french open nadal even made federer cry at the australian open in 2009 and there is gne be no number 17 coz novak has cme know

  • @1817139 you can't change my opinion. ROGER IS THE BEST! 16 grand slams, 67 atp titles, 237 consecutive weeks as world #1...I also respect Nadal bcuz he is the best clay courter... but... roger is an all rounder...And about Nole... in my opinion he is better than Nadal because he is an all rounder 2. He took the wimby title and the australian open. He showed us that he is better than Nadal. HE BEAT HIM 5 TIMES! SO OPEN YOUR EYES! ROGER IS THE BEST!!!

  • @1817139 and remember... roger ended nole's streak. That means Roger can beat Nole and that means Roger will take the 17th.

  • @rogerfedererfan98 unfortunately the seeding is so that novak and nadal can only meet in the final. Therefore Nadal cannot be knocked out by Nole to be beaten by Roger in the final. Therefore Nole will take his 6th, but judging by the AO final Nadal could be better by spring

  • @erkinchik i didn't say that roger will beat him in the final... i don't even said that roger will beat nole in any of the rounds. I SAID THAT ROGER WILLL TAKE HIS 17TH AND HE HAS A VERY GOOD CHANCE OF TAKING IT AT THE FRENCH OPEN THIS YEAR SO IF YOU SUPPORT ANYONE ELSE IT'S NOT MY JOB TO MAKE YOU SUPPORT ROGER BUT I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY DID YOU POST THAT COMMENT SAYING THAT NOLE WILL TAKE HIS 6TH AND NADAL COULD BE BETTER BY SPRING ONLY BECAUSE YOU DON'T SUPPORT FEDERER...

  • Fed was really the perfect number one in many ways and it's always fascinating to watch him play. How bland are Nadal-Djokovic matches in comparison...

  • Fed"s dad is one of the few tennis daddies (and mommies) who doesn't look like a mafioso or crook.

  • great match! hope both of the players could play like this again

  • this should have been the finals

  • Just one word: EPIC!

  • Commentator was so right at the end of the vid.

  • Del Potro is an amazing competitor and it was great to see him back! Hope he continues to succeed :)

  • 3:53 federer smiles at del potro after that massive forehand clipped the line but fed didn't get a play even though he was close to it

lots of mutual respect throughout this match, good to see, without them licking each others balls like james blake does sometimes, still very competitive and intense

  • @unowen727 agreed

  • That's what I love about tennis! It's such a fair sport. Del Potro is a great sportsman!

  • The Nadals love and revere Federer.

  • Comment removed

  • This match was the real final that year. The level these 2 were playing was leagues above the other 2 semi finalists. If only Delpo and Fed were on seperate halves of the draw

  • Great match, biggest compliment you can pay to Del Potro is that Federer had to bring out his best, best tennis to get through in the end here, one of his guttsiest wins in the situation.

  • What the HELL was that at 3:52? It almost bounced up in the stands!

  • such a shame that the one thing that decided this match was a Del Potro double fault :(

  • I hope Del Potro will be back 100 % soon. He was on such a high level back in 2009.

  • Considering the drama, the quality of play, and what was on the line for Federer,

this was undoubtedly one of the best clay court matches of all time.

  • almost pissed my pants when watching this match

  • I'm not exactly sure, but I think that break of serve at (Del Potro serving) 1-2 in the 4th set was the first time Delpo's serve got broken in this tournament... That's amazing.

  • fantastic match.thx for uploading.

  • Oh, wow. Del Potro has such a positive attitude. More players should be like him.

  • 3:49 crazy stuff lol

  • @reefric yes! he is argentinian!!

  • does Anna Wintour actually like tennis?

  • @fujifour

no, she likes federer for his grace on court

    and frankly, who doesnt?

  • 3:51 hehe looks like they stopped for a second

  • @EthanRF1 He's MIA for 2010. He'll have to make his move next year and get back into optimum form. I still think he has the potential to take out the two best players in the world at a GS, as he's already proven.

  • I hope Del Potro can play this good again in 2011! This was a great match, and I'm glad both Fed and Delpo showed great respect at the end

  • Delpo will end the Fedal era. He's gonna start with Nadal first. He's coming.......

  • has anyone noticed how talented del potro is? He is maybe the most talented guy the top 10. That guy is soo good when healthy!!

  • del potro sucks

  • @chrismne92 what ? Del Potro will be one of the best players ever !

  • @jmsbatista lol, keep dreaming....

  • @chrismne92 WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Del Potro needs to get back to the tour ASAP. He is clearly the next great one and this performance, at the age of twenty, together with his victory at the US Open a few months later showed that if healthy he will be a force to be reckoned with. He barely lost to an in-form Federer here, beat him a few months later and is now 5-0 against Fed and Rafa combined in his last 5 matches.

  • juan martin es un alto bonachon jejejej.....respetuosisimo saludo a su idolo.....

  • el mejor partido del torneo

  • His Backhand has been so solid during this match .. That's what was missing for FO and Wimb 2010, unfortunately .. He will always be in trouble against these huge hitters if his backhand is not rock solid during the rallies.

  • thumbs up if you saw the bird fly past the camera

  • I think this and the 2009 Wimbledon are one of the last tournaments that Federer wanted badly. In some way it's sad Federer won everything he wanted cause he has little, if no motivation left.

  • the way jmdp was playing here, even he could beat that nadal in RG09.

  • Amazing match... for me, it was the 3rd best match of 2009, after the Wimbledon final and the Australian Open final, respectively...

  • this was definitely the best semi-final day ive ever watched, two epic 5-setters with some crazy tennis being played.

the fans really got their moneys worth haha.

come on roger, repeat in a couple of weeks!!!!

  • this was such a wonderful match, so much class on both sides of the net.

I think it is amazing to see how much respect they have for eachother.

and lets be honest, Del Potro had his revenge anyway =) Federer deserved to win the French Open!

  • DP said in his interview before the match that if he couldn't win the FO then he wanted to see Roger do it

  • 2010!!! Rogers Grand slam you'll see... He'll beat all the great players, because he is the King!!!! Roger rules

  • I remember DelPo saying in his presser that at the net he told Fed he wanted him to win in the final. Class.

  • Del Potro will beat Nadal at Roland Garros, you will see...

  • @angelwebeza First he needs to recover form the wrist injuty, and yet if he does, Federer will once again stand on his way, and even if he makes it to Nadal you know there is almost no one who an beat him on clay

  • 1:08-1:12 i thought del po was gunna win when i watched this live. was on the edge of my seat

  • nice quality

  • that was nice gesture by federer's father..not applauding when del potro made the double fault..

i know toni nadal would be the complete opposite..he hates federer lol

  • @AlphaDraconis7

I don't think he hates Federer. He has praised him on numerous occasions and when he played against Rafa and came up with amazing shots, he applauded.

  • I agree. I read an interview once where Toni Nadal admitted that Federer was a better player than Nadal in the grand scheme of things, such as regarding their legacy, comparing their natural talent, etcetera.

He and Rafa truly respect Federer.

  • toni doesnt hate federer, of course not....when rafa won aussie open against fed, in the press conferences, toni cried for federers heart breaking loss and said kind words about him.

  • @AlphaDraconis7 totally agree. I can't speak for the Nadal clan but I can say I believe Roger's father and family are all class

  • @AlphaDraconis7 Yea same with Djokovic's dad...that guy is an asshole.

  • @AlphaDraconis7 toni nadal like his awful nephew, have no class at all. The good news is that Nadal will never be seen as greater than Fed in history books, he will never make 4 AO, 6 Wimb or 5 US. He couldnt even make 5 consecutive french on his beloved clay.

  • @AlphaDraconis7 Just to start, I'm not a Nadal fan. But stop writing stupid things. Toni Nadal is really respectful with all the Nadal's opponents, and he always applauses when the other guy makes a point.

  • @AlphaDraconis7 your first line was correct but the 2nd is bollocks!

  • That's what the fans love to see as well. It's hard to feel what the other players does because after you win, you've got a rewarding feeling yet your opponent feels out-geniused. Not sure how you should feel after playing awesome and still failing against Federer. That's life in Tennis: play your best and still lose.

  • ce del potro a un coup droit fabuleux, son jeu m'hypnotise, bravo del potro, dommage qui tu es perdu

  • Del Potro has to be the most powerful player I've ever seen in tennis

  • I don't know, he has extremely powerful groundstrokes, but it is kind of a toss up between him and a few other players to determine who has consistently the biggest ground game off both wings.

  • the best part about delpo is he doesnt choke...

  • If anyone is gonna kill the one handed backhand on the men's tour like it died out in the women's tour, it's gonna be players like del potro. Outrageous hitting. I know federer isn't easily overpowered. If he's having trouble on slow courts, what's gonna happen on faster courts?

  • @JL6293

I think it would be a great loss for the game if the one-handed backhand becomes obsolete. Roger is the only player in the Top 10 who has one. The rest all have double-handers.

  • It's certainly true that loss of a one-handed backhand would hurt the game as far as history goes. But if a one-handed backhand is technically inferior to the two-handed, changes will happen on tour. That would be called change. I'm not hoping for it, but imagine how hard it is to have a one handed backhand on tour these days. (continue on next comment).

  • @JL6293

Not only for history but also for the loss of variety. It is interesting to watch players with different styles. If everyone starts having a double-hander, it will take something away from the game.

Yes, as a general rule, it is weaker than a double-hander but you also get more reach. I also think that if you develop it earlier enough in your career, it can be very effective.

  • (read previous comment)...You have the weakness of being overpowered, over-spun (height of shots), and a combination of the two. It's not easy to disguise the 1hbh either. Due to all the biochemical parts that could go wrong on the 1hbh, one has to stick to the specific form in order to hit it correctly. Also with too many biochemically unstable parts of concern, it's also a harder shot to stabilize the racket on. Also, 1hbh is directly supported by the weakest muscle in your forearm-the backarm

  • @JL6293

Just look at Roger. He has had to constantly overcome players with double-handers in his career (some with great double-handers) and he has done so.

I get the impression many choose the doubler because it is easier to control and therefore much easier to learn.

And yet, with all those weaknesses that could come up, he has still dominated the field for years. Unfortunately, coaches just aren't teaching it nowadays. It will be a sad day when Roger goes that's all I know......

  • A 1hbh like Roger's can handle a 2hbh in a crosscourt duel, but what really bothers me is when Roger is playing his backhand to an inside out forehand. He's starting to lose more and more of those kind of points against players. It used to not be a problem at all.

  • @JL6293

Yeah but you have to remember that Roger isn't as young as he used to be. Age catches up with everyone, including Roger. With age, consistency tends to suffer too. Just look at Sampras towards the end of his career.

But this match was unbelievable. Such high quality.

  • Age does catch up with people, but Roger's backhand has significant improvement since year 2005. When I made the comment that Roger is starting to lose more of the ad court cross court rallies, I'm saying that his competition is improving. I don't think Federer has lost a step on his backhand since his prime. Sampras relied a lot on his running forehand. So when he aged, the down the line shots became more effective against him. Pete needed that speed to be able to hang on the ad court.

  • @JL6293

I have to disagree with you here.

Roger has definately slowed down a bit from his 2006 form, for example. In 2006, everything about his movement and shots was almost perfect. Nowadays, it's not quite the same. He is still an amazing player and worthy to be at the top but for me, nothing will beat the Federer of 2006.

But Roger's bh definately has improved from 2005 onwards, although it was a good enough shot pre-2005 too.

  • Federer's competition in 2006 also wasn't as tough. Top ten players of 2006 were mostly baseliners without severely punishing shots. Federer had undoubtedly the biggest forehand (as far as effectiveness goes) in the top 10 in 2006. His nearest competitor on the forehand might be Gonzalez and Blake. In fact, in the top 30 that year, the biggest hitters were Berdych, Safin, Nalbandian, Blake, and Soderling. I guess I'm just trying to say that Fed's competition wasn't as "powerful" that year.

  • @JL6293

Fair enough. I still believe and I think many others do too that Roger was better in 2006 than he was in 2009. If you look at his matches then and compare them to now, there is clearly a difference.

Most players these days are baseliners, full stop. Nalbandian has VERY punishing shots, as does Blake and Gonzalez. Again, neither of these are the players they once were.

Also, Nalbandian has defeated ALL the top players of today and yet Roger still beat him 4 times in 2006.

  • @JL6293

I always wonder how someone measures the strength of competition from one year to the next. Many say Federer plays/played in a 'weak' era and yet their only criteria seems to be that his opponents have not won more slams. And yet, commentators a few years ago were saying that the depth in the men's game has never been so great.

  • @JL6293 Another reason why I say Roger was better in 2006: look at the quality players he bageled that year: Baghdatis (Australian Open) Haas (Australian Open) Kiefer (Australian Open) Blake (Indian Wells, US Open, Masters Cup) Nadal (Wimbledon) Nalbandian (Madrid) Gonzalez (Madrid) Tursunov (Toronto) Henman (Wimbledon) Bjorkman (Wimbledon) Berdych (Halle) Clement (Miami) How often do you see Nadal, Gonzalez, Blake or Nalbandian bageled?
  • Bageling players shows consistency of play. Not only that but consistent high levels. Federer double bageled Del Potro at the Australian Open. When he played there, it was truely outrageous aggression from Federer. He was up and attacking asap. Nadal was still very early in his career in 2006. I don't think he started sparking til 07. I'm not surprised about Gonzalez - he can be inconsistent and I don't know how well he played to get bageled. The Nalb match was impressive. Blake...meh.

  • @JL6293

Well, how many players have bageled Blake three times in one year? At the Masters Cup and US Open, he was playing great.

Nadal was young but his 2006 year was virtually identical to his 2007 year and in fact, was better than his 2009 year. Don't forget, he had been #2 for more than a year.

As for the AO this year vs Delpo, I haven't seen that match yet (still watching others in my vast collection lol) but my Mum thinks Delpo played crap. I'll have to see the match for myself....

  • I'll check out the Nadal, Gonzo, Blake, and Nalb matches before I get back to you on that one.

  • @JL6293

I don't know if any other player ever produced about 20 bagels in one year. That alone should be a demonstration of how superb Federer was that year. Getting to 16 finals out of 17 tournaments played. Winning almost 4 slams, masters cup, 4 masters events and numerous smaller ones. And a 92-5 year record, the best of anyone in history imo (yes, % wise McEnroe's 82-3 was slightly better) but Federer won 10 more matches and only lost 2 more (4 of those losses coming to the King of Clay)

  • I see where you're getting at, and no point in arguing against stats. I just thought that from a less pragmatic viewpoint, I think Federer's competition is improving more than he is falling out of his prime. I'm sure many would agree Fed is still playing very much worthy of the #1 ranking. It seems to me that players are also getting smarter. Fore instance, the slice backhand cross court used to be such an easy shot for Federer to neutralize positions with. Yet now, it's far less effective.

  • I've noticed Fed's forehand doesn't wreak havoc as it used to, for example at US 2007 semi Davydenko played very well, let's say 90% of what he plays now, and Fed dispatched him easily in three sets, Fed was going for his shots, he created angles with his groundstrokes and wasn't afraid to pull the trigger, he hasn't been playing like that for ages, he played very well in four tournaments: US Open and Basel in 2008, Madrid and Cincinnati in 2009

  • That's absolutely right. I do believe that Federer's improving competition does play a factor in that mental influence. Federer's a great front runner - when he's out in front or confident, he pulls triggers and heads roll. US Open 2008 was probably one of the best examples of Federer playing like a beast again. The shots Federer was hitting had such little margin of error, yet his opponents still wonder how they ended up losing so badly.

Federer's confidence is probably the pivotal factor.

  • Man you are amazing ... I totally agree with your comment. But I think the best tennis he has played in 2 years (that is to say since the masters cup 2007 were no one could have taken him to A TIE BREAK (except in the match against gonzalez which was kind of a wake up match for him i guess) because of how well he played) is in the Aussi 2010. He played really well and I think if he continues with this attitude, and he meats Nadal in the French, it'ss going to be the first interesting final nclay

  • en realidad el potro me hizo recordar a sampras en los 90. Sin embargo, Sampras con su spin era impresionante. La verdad muy buena estrategia la del potro al estar en la ofensiva presionando adelante a Roger.

  • 3:54 fantastic..................

  • federer really turned it up for the last 2 sets.

  • 1:38 .....magic

  • Before the match Del Potro said he was rotting for Roger to win if he (Del Potro couldn') Del Potro certainly did his best to stop Rog tho. If DP plays like this at US he could be a threat - Wimbledon was a washout for him

  • as we saw he was a threat

  • good call ^^

  • man DelPo played more than 100% I think there's a little bit of fatigue.. he was serving like a beast then at the fifth set he was not getting a lot of first serves in. I feel sorry for him he's so nice to Roger.... Don't matter anyways Roger has the title^^

  • Que canonasos q tira este del potro!! el mas potente drive del circuito, mas que Gonzales todavia.

  • great match, definitely the best of French Open and probably the best of this year - Del Potro really surprised me in this match with his wonderful shotmaking and serving, unfortunately he had GOAT on the other side of the net and eventually Fed prevailed...hopefully these two will have more heroic matches like this

  • nice vid grreat quality

  • wat makes tennis so worth watching, is moments like in the end of the match, where fed and del shake hands, smiling and actually taking time, and showing appreication and respect for each other as tennis players. both of them, are simply great role models for our sport....its amazing to see a whole match like this one, full of inspiring shots. and then to see them shake hands and show respect in the end, it gave me chills and goosebumps, everytime i watch it.

  • totally correct

  • WTF!!

Is that Anna Wintour at 2.40?

  • yes is her. Because she makes the photos for roger

  • Thanks JaffaRafa great Highlights, I hope you upload more of this type. Del Potro is one of the most powerful players in the world, look at these incredible forehand: 2:10 and 2:53 min. Thanks

  • great highlights, thanks! Winning the French Open after being so close to defeat a couple times and then winning that marathon against Roddick at Wimbledon have proven Federer's incredible mental fortitude. He's undoubtly the greatest of all time now, but It will be interesting to see if Roger can really solidify himself as the number one dominant player in the game a la 2004-2007. He has won 3 of the last 4 slams, but Rafa was unable to play wimbledon enabling Roger to reclaim number 1.

  • fantastic........ great match, great quality, great upload. i've been waiting for that one for quite a while, thank you very much.

at the last few days i saw that you've been uploading great RF stuff, way to go!!!

  • more to come

  • i think that if you can have the patience of put the clips in HD could be even better.
