  • I love John, and I'm happy that the Americans apriciate him too but has anyone else notice that whenever he goes over to America to do an acting thing he comes back sknnier?

  • @HorseyWitchOfTheEast What are you implying?

  • @grl008 I wasn't really implying anything. Just seeing if anyone agreed

  • She sounds oddly like Sarah Brightman here. No bad thing.

  • I think this song of John Barrowman makes the song become more of a praise than intended. But really that's not a bad call either if you take the song out of context like this.

  • ok change of words a little bit... and im not a fan of the girl.

  • No way... it's so random that he would sing this song....

  • It would be so fantastic if JB could come to Spain to sing!. No doubt I'd be there to listen and see him!

  • I hear Maria Friedman is going to be singing at Cadogan Hall this August! Wow! Great singer and venue!

  • I recently discovered a old song called "Try to Remember" that i hadnt heard before, and when i looked on you tube it seems that its been covered so many times by really big artists but John Barrowman's version was by far the best...mine was by Brian Conley.

I would be interested myself to find out if Antonio Banderas has done anymore singing since Evita.John does sing this good..i agree, im just a huge huge fan of Antonio's so a little bias...ha !

  • No one sings this song like Antonio Baneras

  • Yes, Antonio Banderas did a very good job in the film of Evita, but on one video of the film I heard I thought it sounded as if the fabulous Michael Ball was ghosting for him, especially at the beginning of this song! I would like to know if Antonio has done any other singing since? I love John's version of this beautiful song.

  • You could try IMDB to find information as Antonio B. as a singer. Also try "Antonio Banderas cantando" or "Antonio Banderas singing" here in You Tube. Now I recall he was a nominee for the best actor in a musical, for "Nine" (Tony Awards 2003)

  • I agree, JB here sings it too....hard, if that makes sense. The song loses the gentleness it originally had.

  • This is absolutely beautiful. I love john Barrowman. I find no flaw with him at all.

    love love love

  • Personally I don't like his voice. Its too thin and whiny for me. No body or soul to it.

He should stick to acting imho.

  • This was not a song for you to start on then for John. His voice is strong and beautiful. Many of his stuff has a lot of soul in it, and you can hear the honesty in his music.

  • I've read comments to John B. songs saying he could be good if he trained. ~growls with fangirl rage~ but I do get what they mean; he's not a classical tenor. He's developed his style in musicals and that's why it sometimes seems he's 'oversinging' it.

I usually find his voice &delivery extremely pleasant, as do millions of others.

It's not just personal but what you've learned. I've never liked classical "proper" singing (eg opera); a technical skill but for me it lacks all feeling.

  • I didn't knowthat Captain Jack Harness could sing so incredibly well¡¡ Now I'm sure he's perfect ;)

  • Barrowman has ONLY been in 15 or so major London West End and Broadway musical productions in the past twenty years! Besides being a rising star in Doctor Who and the lead in Torchwood, he also does TV presenting in the UK,. His nickname at one point in the late 1990's was "the golden boy of the West End". He also had a nickname of "leather lungs" as he had and still has such power in his voice. He has a musical theatre trained and pop trained voice, not an operatic voice.

  • Thanks so much for your comments. Unfortunately JB is quite unknown in my country. I think only people like me who love sci-fi know him for the TV series. But thank to YouTube I've been able to discover his magnificent musical talent. I love especially his wonderful rendition of "María", from "West Side story" (I named my only daughter María after this song, and I can't help crying when I listen to his lovely tender voice singing this song!!!)

    Greetings

  • Yes he is. He plays Captain Jack.

  • No one can sing this like Mandy Potemkin. I'm sorry, but this isn't even close!

  • Do you mean the battleship? Or maybe Mandy Patinkin?

  • Ja,ja,ja¡ What a funny remark¡

  • Well, he's different. I didn't like Patinkin, though - too flat and cold for my taste but there you go, it's personal.

It makes me smile that so many Americans call Patinkin "the original" Che. The original Che in Evita was David Essex.

  • Well, if you count the original concept release before it went on the west end then Colm Wilkinson is the original Che

  • I don't know what you mean by "concept release" but I bought the original album when it was first realeased, played it to death and learned it by heart before it was produced on stage anywhere. I'm not familiar with recordings of any stage versions.

I lost that album many years ago, when I lost everything else, and perhaps memory serves me ill. Forgive my ignorance; I don't know the name Colm Wilkinson! I do remember that I didn't much like Che's voice on the original album.

  • Colm if I remember right did the concept stuff for Jekyll and Hyde. I haven't really listened to his stuff, but as for the Patankin comment I absolutely agree with you. I do not like Mandy singing it at all as Che, probably because Antonio in the film spoiled me. It's like when I listen to recordings of stuff John has done, I can't hear anything but John, because he truly spoils us!

  • I've read his autobiography and so I know he played Che I was wondering if I could get anymore of his songs from Evita. I saw the movie and Antoio was so awesome but I am head over heels for John and to have him sing all those songs would be amazing.

  • Oh I wish, I've looked on his website and on Ebay, they never did a CD of him singing other songs from Evita. But recently I did find a video of John singing Oh What a Circus from the show, it was at Andrew Llyod Webber's birthday celebration at Hyde Park. It's on my favourites :)

  • OMG! That is so not fair :) I have scored the internet so I know all the movies and Cd's he's in and get all his songs. It is so hard.

  • actualy it has grown on me a bit

  • no matter how much i love john barrowman i still think antonio banderus' voice suites this song better.

  • Oh I dunno, Antonio does do a beautiful job with it but so does John :)

  • I think John's voice suits this song better but the way Antonio sung 'Oh What A Circus' was better. I saw John's version and the song is different slightly. Like at one point he says "We've made the front page of all of the world's papers today." It was too much in one line and so he rushed it.

  • That "front page" line is in Antonio's version (the film), the original album (pre stage production) and, well, all the versions I've heard.

Which one sounded rushed to you?

  • John's version when he sings it at A.L Webber's party he changes the lie slightly and rushes it to fit the added lyrics. It doesn't suit it.

  • Ah, ok. I haven't heard that.

  • Agreed.

They're also both sexy in their own ways.

They're also both unavailable - and unattainable for 99.9999% of us anyway.

(goes off to sulk a bit in the corner)

  • By far the best version... my favorite is still Antiono Banderas and Madonna, because of the movie...

  • I love Maria Friedman

  • I love this man to bits. Such a beautiful voice!! this song does every bit of it justice!

  • My favorite on this CD, thanks!
