I remember hiding away from the BBC Radio 2 commentary for the last 13 minutes, hoping Liverpool wouldn't equalise after Greenhoff scored. If I had listened to the rest of the match, United would have lost. Great home-grown heroes one and all (on both teams)!
I always thought Alan Hansen was at fault for the goal. He moves out of position to intercept Mcilroy's run into the box. However looking more carefully I noticed that Emlyn Hughes who was at left back should have moved inside to cover for Hansen but he is nowhere to be seen.
Clemence kept Liverpool in these games despite repeated and uncharacteristc lapses Liverpool's defence. The similiarities with the '85 semi+replay are striking. I remember hearing a rumour why Clemence left Liverpool in '81 and it had something to do with Souness who had just started in the 78/79 season. Anyone know?
At the time, Clemence just said that the joy of winning cups at Anfield had faded after he'd stopped feeling overjoyed just fifteen minutes after the 1981 European Cup win
see Andy Ritchie trying to come on as sub ? do you remember he scored a hat-trick against Leeds the previous week and was very unlucky not to play in the semi ....
I think Jordan was the better bet for the semi-final; but we'd had 'Boro in the midweek after the Leeds match, and Ritchie was dropped. A truly mind boggling decision
