adios literally translates as "to God" as well; it's not a normal goodbye, but you only say it if you assume that you will never see the person again. That is, in this life - "adios" implies: "if we see eachother again, it will be when we are with God, i.e. in heaven" (just as in the French 'adieu')

But here it just means that he is asking God for something - the dative in Spanish is formed with "a" (to) + noun
