An absolute treasure! I have been waiting for more than 30 years to hear Steely Dan perform this song (or even recognize that it ever existed). Thank you with all my heart bcault!
THEY FINALLY PLAY IT! AMAZING.... a 30 second section of the original cut remains somewhere and sounds truly amazing. Two bootlegs also exist, and sound pretty damned good.
SD's setlist; Steely Dan ‘Rarities’ setlist 1. Your gold Teeth I 2. Aja 3. Black Friday 4. Hey 19 5. The Bear (Aja outcast) 6. Time Out of Mind 7. Rikki Don’t Lose That Number 8. Jack Of Speed (Blues Version) 9. Show Biz Kids 10. Pearl of the Quarter 11. Bodhisattva 12. The Second Arrangement(Gaucho Deletion) 13. Dr. Wu 14. Mama Don’t Take No “Miss,” (Band intro) 15. American Lovers (Thomas Jefferson K song) 16. Josie 17. Peg 18. My Old School 19. Reelin’ in the Years 20. This Mobile Home
Thank you, bcaulf. Thanks to Don & Walt for re-learning this song after the pain of losing it 30 years ago (due to a technician's mistake that erased all the studio tracks, a song that had reportedly taken even more than the usual fagan/becker-esque effort/time to record) and leaving everyone unwilling to start over at the time. Thank you D&W for doing it now so we could wrap ourselves in a wonderful song we almost never heard. I think I'm even happier for you 2, the pain has hopefully ended.
@deanscovell From what I understand they did attempt to rerecord it with an entirely different line-up, but deemed it inferior to the original. Apparently the first recording had a real sparkle they couldn't duplicate. It's really too bad, could have been one of their biggest hits I think.
Thank you, thank you for posting this (and dodging the vigilant security guys)!! It was positively the most transcendent experience of the tour, I'm so glad someone captured it for posterity!!
Finally! Thank you so much for capturing history! This is, afaik, the first-ever public performance of this amazing track! I won't bore you with the story - most people likely to read this will know it. Suffice it to say I've been counting the days leading up to the rarities show, and doing YouTube searches all day today. I love both the bare-bones demo and the full-band version, and now at last there's a live version. I hope they keep it in the set, at least until their next visit to Norway :-)
finally. Now get back to UK so i can hear this little cracker!!
