lol, I think in japan they think about the future, so doesn't matter if *right now* this door is rather unpractical, the purpose is improving and progressing without letting money and profit get in the way of progress. Every country has its priorities. Some are money, some are progress. Japan technology, education, health care, diet, social interaction, etc is much more advanced than most of the "biggest" and "richest" countries in the world.

The technology here is actually not all that complex.. looks like each bar just has a proximity sensor on the end of it and when there's something close it opens until it can't detect anything, but it's a cool result :p

Its a prototype.. ofcourse its not 100% functional and practical. Over time this might be developed into something very useful... or not. Thats not the main point. Its by trying out different things and striving to come up with solutions and innovative designs that allow us to develop further. Through research and development they might infact discover something 'incredible', completely out of the blue.

They made this because it reduces the percentage of the dust and bacteria that could come in through a larger opening. So basically, designing a door that opens according to your shape makes the air a little cleaner.
