I for one think that wat Marsalis is doing is fukn awsome.... Its important to keep the origin of jazz alive, especially to the new generations on the way. Cuz u cant run without learning how to walk first.
Wynton has fun to declare jazz music as the simplest form of folk music, as the summary of a entire siecle's process, he's devoted, get this. He loves teaching about jazz history too. He surely knows about modern music. I heard him playing in a Don Cherry maneer... that's what the music expected from him in that moment - and he can handle it. Why don't people simply accept him as an ambassador of good taste and responsability for the entire music treasure. He tries to help us by teaching music!
He is a great musician and innovator. For music to progress you have to know where it's come from. If you don't know the past you'll certainly never know the future
Regardless of what people think you got be you, I know cats that love old school music and would have it no other way and I no people that want to push music beyond its current and past state, you have must do you whatever that is, greatness comes from within not from the opinions of others. You know you are great when you discover the best in you, every comment about you is just an opinion, which everyone has. If you dont have anything good to say dont say anything.
One cannot compare W Marsalis with terrence blanchard orm even hargrove! People should stop kidding! wyNton can stylistically play everthing he wants modern as you my call it or traditional...better than all the other COMTEMPORARIES MENTIONED HERE :
and even play the trumpet better too; NOT JUST THE MUSIC
He is a FANTASTIC musician and trumpeter, but Wynton chooses NOT to develop new ideas for music and progress the genre. I love his playing and also think the LCJO is great, but don't pretend it's anything new.
You could describe his part in jazz as "self-declared historical jazz regurgitation extraordinair." What he does, he is probably the best at though. I mean, I on here watching videos of him.
@6stringsdown ive read and heard this opinion of wynton often. but the only musician ive heard it from is Keith Jarrett.Art Farmer, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Joe HEnderson, Dizzy, Betty Carter,Art Blakey et al have spoken glowingly of him. i think a lot of the angst towards him is because of the unprecedented money and oppurtunity he got at an early age and being billed as savior of jazz. and stanley crouch's liner notes claiming hes the most important person in the world
I'm not basing everything of this single clip; I'm basing it off of every record he has released. Also Coltrane is a pretty bad example of 50s bop, Parker maybe, not Coltrane. Coltrane is more known as a modal/ avant garde player. Not to mention New Orleans jazz is pre 1950's even further proving my point. Also the Ken Burns series is a very warped view of jazz considering it completely avoided the 70's to current times. Terence Blanchard is modern, as is my favorite Roy Hargrove. Wynton is not.
I think jazz could be dead today because all the muscians trying to play jazz today just copy the old master even with their errors: nobody ( most jazz musicians today attempt to listen to their inner voices or INNER URGE everyone copies the master, most musicians nowadays cannot be reconised rom just their own sound : in pop music each artist has his own Voice. is JAZZ DEAD
Actually Marsalis' is far to0 engrossed in teaching and playing the jazz of the past. If anything he is killing the forward progression of jazz, and therefore what jazz is in and of itself. He is playing style reflects that of 1950's bop players, which is excellent music. But to despise more progressive jazz styles, is not fair to the idiom. Don't take my word for it, Miles Davis' himself said it. Google it, you may find it rather interesting.
how is he killing the forward progression? you are basing everything he does on this short clip? wynton is one of the greatest jazz innovators of today; look up his bio before you talk about him. and as far as him playin the bop style of the 50s, this is nowhere near that. he even refers to new orleans music as what he is doing. listen to coltrane if you want 50s bop. finally google will get you next to nothing if you really want to learn something.
It's funny how the have the white guys playing in the square-sounding "Sousa band" and the black guys in the cool-sounding "Jazz band"
