I own A-24 since 2007... very happy with the quality. Works perfect on the ground and in the air. VOR is useful feature. No problem with ATC while in Cessna 172, ICOM works almost as good as on board radio.
@BajoMoPre hey... if you transmit a lot its not going to last long. 4 hours of flight in Chicago area will kill the battery. but if you plan to monitor ATC it can hold 20h continuously with no problem.
Is it normal for the battery have a little crack in between??? I just got the RaDIO for my husband and he really likes it but I noticed this little crack and I am a little concern.....
For those who wonder about reach... this radio is operational within 10 miles radius (minimum ; in standard OACI atmosphere) in air altitude (cleared from buildings). Transmitting power is a good 5.0 Watts, but keep in mind that FM (or any radiowave) radio's reach depend more on land obstacles than on power (still power helps) when buying a radio.
Hey man, good explanation, i own the IC-A14, beautiful radio , talking about the range, its quite good, i live in San Salvador and the closest airport is within 9.5km with a lot of obstructions, and i can hear clear as water the ATC broadcast(tower and airplanes), now the other airport is within 42km,this i can barely hear the ATIS when im in my house roof, but mostly Icom aviation equipment is the best in the market! oh yeah!
The one you see here is ICOM IC A-24. Designed for Airband, not only is it a Handheld radio Receiver, but also it's also Transceiver (Push to talk button). I have the same (I'm a private pilot ; you'll be needing a aeronautical radio-licence to broadcast on theses 118-136 MHz freq.). It feel very solid and professionnal (for alternative, emergency radio of course). You also get the NAV frequencies for VOR, DVOR, ...
are you talking for air band operations? the best.. Icom, no doubt, Icom and Yaesu/Vertex Standard are the only two that make handheld air band radios..
Or.. are you talking in general?? id say Icom too, but Kenwood, Uniden and Motorola are a piece of equipment too..
i have a 10 year old radio shack , and i use a 1.2 m twisted pair copper cable for an antenna and can easily hear planes 200 , yes 200 miles away.. pakistan
I live 45 min from the nearst airport.. in dominicsties.. if i have one of thosse can i hear it from where i live and the international airport i live 1 hour and 35 min from can i hear`?
You will probably only hear the planes (when they fly ) not the airports controlers . the more the plane is high the more distance radio waves travels
I have to push a button on mine to hear the signal.. does anyone know i can change that so i dont have to push the button and the sound just comes up like this one???
Go with the IC-A24. I got mine up at Oshkosk Airventure 2007 and love it. Good RX audio and great TX too. It seemed a little more rugged and easier to use than the Vertex. I also checked the stock "rubber duck" antenna with an analyzer and found it to be resonant near 123MHz making it useful for CTAF/Unicom frequencies near that.
The reception sounds great. I'm trying to decide between the Icom and the Yaesu. How far are you from YUL? I take you're using the supplied stock antenna there?
Stock antenna , (antenna on my car is much better)I'm not very far from airport , but any radio reception is bad here . I like the icom : Audio is loud and clear , Radio seem robust , you feel the quality. my negative : receive noise from my car engine (don't know how it could work in a plane) and does not work if closer than 5 feet of a computer .
Where do I buy one?

@Piahoneypie The crack is located in the upper left side between the radio and the battery

Yes, you'll hear planes from very far away but you won't be able to hear the controllers if they're more than about 10 miles away.

Read the manual about setting squelch levels...
"Basic Operation" - Setting a squelch Level Page 8. Yours is obviously set to high (near to 24) turn it lower (closer to zero.
