@nipulon0313 I admit he is a great bass player, but John Wetton (King Crimson, UK, Mogul Thrash, Asia), John Entwistle (The Who), and Chris Squire (Yes) have always been light years ahead.

@dickrogering Ah dude I agree with you so much! Irritates me insanely that bands like suicidal, testament, exodus etc. are still churning out insane material while Metallica are still worshipped for music they wrote 20-30 years ago....
@jungleman68 Hipster? You know, I can't know every single slang insult you Americans use, but nice of you to try. I know what real Metal is. Children of Bodom, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, HammerFall... To name a few. Funk Metal is not the wort kind of Metal, rap Metal is worse. They are simply inferior to melodic death metal, power metal, doom/death metal, heavy metal, trash metal, speed metal, etc.........
@CrossHolder92 heard one melodic death metal band, heard them all. 2 guitarists exchange widdly solos, while someone growls out something about moons and vikings
Don't get me wrong, I like the genre (old soilwork, symphony x) but it's not the be all and end all of metal, mate
@Krapvag Moons and Vikings? haha, that's more Viking and Folk Metal.... Course, melodeath is not all there is from metal..... But if you don't like growling..... There's Power Metal, Progressive Metal, Trash Metal, Speed Metal.... I guess Americans aren't all that 'hot' for Power, Melodeath or Doom Metal.....
@CrossHolder92 My biggest problem with a lot of power metal is that there are only so many things you can do at that tempo...I heard a Hammerfall album a while back, and it was all machine gun kick drums, except for one song. Rhapsody was the same way, not so much with Maiden, Priest, etc, and DEFINITELY not with Dream Theater. There aren't too many Steve Harrises or John Myungs (or Dirk Schläcters) around, most metal bassists seems to mirror the guitar. Any suggestions on good bassists?
@dharmaseed Ryan Martinie of Mudvayne, Doug Wimbish of Living Colour, wooten of course, and this guy isnt a bassist, but an 8 string guitar player, hes basicaly a bass player and hes phenomenal but if u dont like him, the other guys are sick as hell too. oh and Paolo Greggoleto of Trivium, hes a fukin beast.
@4stringFanatico I agree with you about Victor and Doug Wimbish, they're both very good. I can't find one of those bass players you talked about who isn't buried in the mix, which makes it hard to tell what they're playing. As for Rob Trujillo, I have no complaints against the man. Aside from Flea and Claypool, he was probably one of the first funk bass players I heard in a metal format.
@Amazongrassmonster If you like Mr. Bungle, you'll probably like Nuclear Rabbit too. Jean Baudin plays a 9-string on the albums, but on his solo stuff, he plays an 11-string. He's the one who does the famous Super Mario Bros. Theme cover on the 11-string bass.
@CrossHolder92 yeah I got to agree with you at this point;nore funk or rap don't involve any clear sounding guitars.Metal music indeed requires agression and a dark indusive atmosphere and as a result rap and funk don't belong to this theme.I personally consider industrial metal to be the only really succesful fusiongenre of metal
@bloodyrockfire Yo're right, all other fusions didn't quite make it. Industrial succeded with it's dark and gothic like atmospher to keep the true spirit of metal. It did not try to be comercial or pretty......
@bloodyrockfire Ofcourse, thee are many bands that play Gothic as well as Industrial Metal. they both bring up a specific dark atmosphere that neither funk or rap Metal have.
@bloodyrockfire Haha, fuck yeah mate... I can make House music on my computer, it's that fucking simple and stupid, and mostly, you can say that for the people that listen to it.
dude this is the funmiest shit ever man!!!!! haha reminds me of my dad when he talk about rolling with his older brother in his shitty impala hahaha damn a mexican flea for reals!!!!!
True dude... A talent like Robert Trujillo is wastin both his time and skills on a band like Metallica. His engagment in the band is rarely noticed because of boring basslines and the fact that hes the only member of the band thats not "real" Metallica. It makes him look like some session musician that only play others music. Lets just hope he quits it and gets back to his real roots! =D
yeah i guess so i some cases. but there r some incredible bass players out there hu do things on a bass that u cant do on a guitar. just like Trujilo.
Easy my ass...I can play guitar and I will admit just keeping a basic groove on the bass is easy but to get into the shit that Victor Wooten does is a whole another ball game bud.
not true, i play guitar, and bass, and bass in its basic form, such as crap bands like most idiots listen to, that is really easy, but REAL bass is harder than guitar.
Well, if you just take it the way it is, guitar is harder due to more strings. But depending on how your mind works, you may pick up certain things easier. I think bass is just as easy as guitar, and funk bass is crazy fun to play. But I still prefer lead guitar =D
Guitar is harder because it has more strings? I am proficient in both bass and guitar, and bass is by far, the harder instrument. It requires a lot of finger strength and co-ordination to play a scale with speed. On guitar, it's pretty effortless. Anyway, I don't give a shit, at the end of the day, it's what you do with it that counts.
I never said it was harder, I just said that if you look at it from a simplistic point of view, more strings would seem to make it harder. If you read the rest of my post, you would see that it I then said that they are about the same, depending on how your mind works.
Alright, it's cool. I just get pissed when some guitarist hints that guitar is harder than bass. They're both very different instruments depending on how you look it. I do agree that it depends on how your mind works though, I find bassists tend to think very differently than guitarists.
I think very differently when I'm playing bass, I totally forget about scales and just focus on little hammer ons and runs that sound good. It's just different, that's all.
If they're in metal, it's not hard to see why. Most metal bassists are boring jabronies like Ian Hill who play plodding one-note lines. But Frank Bello, Robert Trujillo, and Joey DeMaio show what choice metal basswork is.
@MorbidRitual Forgot about Sean sorry. I am sure there are some others it's just that Steve is more renowned then other bassists who use the fretless in the Death Metal scene.
I play a six-string electric fretted bass and solo on a four-string fretless. :-) It's normal to think that playing guitar is "harder" or more complex. In all honesty, I've seen bassists who can SMOKE guitar players on some stages. Guitar is not as physically demanding, but with a really high-quality bass with very low action (like buttah!) you can get a lot out of your instrument. If you play, keep on rockin...
