You'd actually make the situation worse because Germany barely had enough locomotives and trucks to carry supplies for them to Russia but it wouldn't have enough seaworthy ships to do it to support a smaller force in Britain.

In 1941 and 1942 the Russians got their asses beat by the German summer blitzkriegs but held on till winter to beat back the Germans (gates of Moscow/Stalingrad) but by the summer of 1943 the Russians had learned to handle the blitzkrieg and stopped the Germans at Kursk. After that the Russians pretty much had their way against the Germans.

@abdg32esd23 The supply problems you mention were due to the Soviet Union relocating their industries east of the Urals after the early successes of Barbarossa and the massive losses of manpower and war materials due to early encirclements, neither of which would have happened if the Soviets had attacked Germany instead of being caught defending with their metaphorical pants down. 1 rifle to 2 men was likewise a logistic anomaly where enemy interdiction made resupply difficult (like Stalingrad).

@abdg32esd23 According to Berthon and Potts (2007) Stalin himself said, in a speech for STAVKA in December 1941, the Soviet union had to be ready for a war with Germany within the next two years. The USSR DID plan a preemptive strike because Mein Kampf and the geopolitics of the time made it clear that Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union would eventually have to fight each other, regardless of German (false) excuses for their own invasion.

@abdg32esd23 Also the Anglo-British alliance was based on Hitler's racist viewpoints and little else. The last thing the British empire wanted was a unified German Europe. The only way to make Britain capitulate was to invade the British isles, and the Kriegsmarine never had the capacity to close and secure the English channel, or even transport the Wehrmacht forces necesary for it. War with the Soviet Union would have broken out by 1943 over Bulgaria according to Stalin's plan regardless.

@abdg32esd23 The Nazi ideology equated dissent with disloyalty and cowardrice, which meant that when Hitler's advisors told him it the Anglo-British alliance was a pipe dream, that invading Eastern Europe would create a resource drain instead of fixing German supply problems, or that invading Poland in 1939 would trigger an all out state of war 2 years before the German economy was mobilized for war, these concerns were all dismissed (often with prejudice) rather than adressed.

For instance, the Fuhrerprinzip virtually guaranteed that any bad decisions taken would rarely be acknowledged, even more rarely rectified. The principle of race struggle ensured that things like AntiStalinism, the military resources tied up in the holocaust or physics research went to waste.

Hitler explicitly said it was necessary for the German Volk to aquire living space and subjugate the slavs in the East to assert their rightful place as the Herrenvolk. It might as well have not been nazi at all if it reneged. When you propose we imagine Nazi Germany "not declaring war on Russia", you might as well propose we imagine "Nazi Germany not being Nazi": ok for wargaming but irrelevant for your point.

@abdg32esd23 That's debatable given the Soviets alone had enough manpower and military production to swamp Germany. It's also a moot point, National-socialism was warmongering at a time of interlocking international military aliances designed specifically to contain Germany.
Had Germany not declared war on America, it still would have had to contend with the British and Russians equipped with American lend-lease. Germany would have lasted longer, but the final result would have been the same.

Nazi Germany was predicated on fighting a war for lebensraum which it couldn't win, which it did through deficit spending that it couldn't pay unless it won, which they could have had if they had not hamstrung their own nuclear program by expelling Jewish scientists or rejecting their theories as "un-Aryan".

@abdg32esd23 An economy can't run through government deficit spending, eventually there will be critical shortage of either consumer goods, industrial commodities or something else because you can fudge the numbers all you want, but you can't solve product shortages with figures. Ultimately, Nazi Germany had the capacity to prolong the war until 1948 perhaps, but it couldn't win because Operation Sealion was unfeasible and Barbarossa was too ambitious.

hitler really wasn't that much of a military genius. most of the time he took credit for what his underlings came up with. for example, the invasion of france - it wasn't hitler's idea to have the schwerpunkt (point of maximum effort) through the ardennes forest, but the idea of manstein and guderian. yet, hitler took credit after the fall. hitler was only a corporal for pete's sake.

In 1941 and 1942 the Russians got their asses beat by the German summer blitzkriegs but held on till winter to beat back the Germans (gates of Moscow/Stalingrad) but by the summer of 1943 the Russians had learned to handle the blitzkrieg and stopped the Germans at Kursk. After that the Russians pretty much had their way against the Germans.

Logistical note: the Soviets had over 2.5 million soldiers involved in the assault on Berlin of which well over 1.5 million were actually used for the assault. The Germans had an actual defensive force of under 100,000 NON professional soldiers.

@Kelly14UK Hitlers ideal was that the ss was to be an entirely separate force from the army,acting independantly.This was a cause for concern amongst the german army high command who perceived the ss as a threat to army supremacy.to calm matters,hitler compromised and integrated the ss under ultimate OKW rule,although they have some leeway to carry out their own operations. a good analogy would be like animals strip grazing

@ImBeowolf stalin had a criminal record and had a lot of his best generals murdered. after stalingrad,he realised the value of his military advisers,and allowed them to make the decisions instead. By contrast,hitler was continually meddling in military matters even though he had limited experience,and this was the reason for a lot of germanys catastrophic defeats,eg the Kursk salient,the falaise gap. i dont agree with stalins genius,but he made the right decisions regarding military matters

@initvesa well it was incredibly heavily fortified and defended by the soviets,and they knew the german plans to attack.some of the generals argued that it was more important to hold the line and instead take the caucasus oil fields. what do you think?

@initvesa looks like it was erich von mansteins idea.ok. but hitler was responsible for the loss of many unescessary soldiers' lives,with his "Fight where they stand and to the last bullet" orders ,rather than allowing a tactical withdrawal and regroup.
