Saw Jeffrey on Wednesday at Heaven - an uplifting night. How on earth he remembers all those words I will never know, he sang this song, it was faultless.
Saw Jeffrey on Wednesday at Heaven - an uplifting night. How on earth he remembers all those words I will never know, he sang this song, it was faultless.
There is no original thought, expression, or music. I am sorry if this bothers you but perhaps you should experience music before 2000, and realize there is nothing new here, except the retro t-shirt, haircut, and digital mix. If you think otherwise listen to early Suicidal Tendencies or the Dead Kennedys. Better yet, listen to Will Oldham. He is concerned about the human condition not criticizing those who express it through art. Lewis has shown himself as nothing more than a parasite.
When you have nothing original to say, are only comfortable with yourself when you slag off someone else, and can only compose repetitive stolen progressions to express and project juvenile themes of latent homosexuality, pubescent angst, mixed with sad idol worship, you are Jeffrey Lewis. This is not art, it is novelty, it is Adam Sandler, but not even funny, just disturbing, like getting mooned by Rush Limbaugh.
@DukeMcManhands Sad as it is for me to admit I think you are correct and hate that I used the phrase "this is not art" What I should have said is that this is not a genuine thoughtful expression which merits the term artistic. It is derivative drivel, which seems merely to have an agenda and/or scheme to generate acceptance and acknowledgment at an intellectual and/or emotional level which through its use of cliche, unoriginal music, and juvenile themes it can never accomplish...
@ftheeddie I respectfully disagree. You are more than entitled to your opinion, but the idea of Lewis being a 'parasite' or this music being 'drivel' is frankly ridiculous. The idea that Jeffrey Lewis is someone who does not even consider himself a musician can produce something with this lyrical dexterity and self-concious humour that's consistent with his work throughout is incredible and renders him in my opinion one of the truest and most earnest artists still working today.
@romeosdistress Thank you for respectfully disagreeing. Lyrical dexterity and self-concious humour describes Justin perfectly, I cannot believe i did not see it before.
@ftheeddie By Justin, you mean Jeffrey? If that's the case, absolutely :) whilst people are of course, as I said before, entitled to their own opinion, thereby creating a multitude of taste and diversity... there are a couple of issues where I think it really is nice to be completely in accordance - I do rather find the works of Jeffrey Lewis to be one of those situations. If I understand you correctly, it's a pleasure to have you on board, captain!
@DukeMcManhands Further, I never meant what I said as an insult only a statement of simple fact as I see it. I actually think the song is quite interesting. It is like a Thomas Kinkade painting, I know there is no real value in it but it is fun to look at for a time.
@ftheeddie You seem to be taking this jeffrey lewis hate thing pretty far, you took the time to comment on two of his videos. You're going to pretty extreme lengths to express your hatred for him, I find that slightly pathetic.
@ftheeddie Do you know what this song is about? Will Oldham wanted his voice heard by millions jeffrey didnt really care, note the line "...And hours passed and I started to think maybe i wont remaster that old album..." Thats pretty much the message of the song, I think he used Will Oldham as an example because maybe they are trying to get the same message across, only Will Oldham is well known and jeffrey wants to know "HOW LONG WILL IT BE BEFORE I GET WELL KNOWN?" thats how i interpret this.
@IGotAPagina That line was more of a joke contrasting the whole song. Because, you know, it's not likely that he would do that after getting beaten and raped by Will Oldham at the train tracks.
I think the defining line in this song is "I kinda thought I was gonna grow up to do stuff that would benefit humanity, but it's getting harder to tell if this artist's life is even benefiting me".
It's a fucking killer line, too. Jeffrey Lewis is badass as hell.
@FupidStaggot42 Yeah, but what hes trying to say in the song is that he's getting all worked up about how he is quite unknown. Like exactly the line you quoted, he's feeling like he is receiving alot less than what he's giving.
Similar words were dictating my life before I heard this song, and since I've heard this song these exact lines take there place every now and then. Artists, thumbs up if you're struggling and you want to quit, you think you're inferior but there is something else in you, an original thing that is you (it is you, therefore it is original) that makes you keep going.
Jeff Lewis is cool as shit, I saw him play in Portland, OR a couple years ago and me and my friends hung out with him after the show, he got a rock from my friend Dave, he thought it was neat-o. I think Jeff is neat-o!

People really think things like the X Factor are there to help artists. They're not.
