This is just... sad. Music that would leave almost every musician on the planet dumbfounded... is being played in a pool hall. Shawn was the greatest.
I mean I don't think I've ever seen a musician with my own two eyes with that much overall musical talent. He probably could have picked up an oboe and been an oboe virtuoso if he wanted to.
i can't believe people were just playing pool when this beautiful music was filling the room...my jaw would have been on the floor and my eyes wide open in amazement. ridiculous that the jonas brothers and lady gaga can pack stadiums and shawn was playing places like this where people didn't even pay attention.
holy shit, his keyboard skills were as deft as his guitar skill! I always heard that he was a killer keys player, but now I've seen. Thanks for the upload!
Well, I guess I don't feel so bad now. If a musician like Lane can leave an audience anything less than spellbound, then I shouldn't complain about some of the shows I've played. But there are no real words to describe that. He's so insanely good.
I barely knew Shawn but he would play anywhere in town just to play. He had a huge following but this a town of incredible musicians and yes I think he was taken for granted. However, I must say Memphis was/is a big punk rock, indie band, old juke joint, r and b or whatever kind of town...not just fricin Freebird.
I first met him in the late 80's. I wouldn't say we were friends but we talked on a lot occasions...especially at this bar Murphy's. It was always a cool vibe around him. One the most intelligent people i've ever encountered.
Chances are this was in Memphis....everyone knew Shawn, and had seen him a million times. To them it is no different than having your buddy over to your house.
Maybe they were used to seeing Shawn and hearing him so often you know...They might have even heard him warming up for hours or just not realized he would be immortalized in the future.
I don't think Shawn was about how big a crowd there was or anything like that. If there was only one person there that was really enjoying the music, he was fine with that. I think it was the music for him, not the recognition. The more video clips i see, the more i realize what an unbelievable talent was lost when he passed away. I wish i could have met him or at least seen him live.
Stunning; his mind was unfathomable, his virtuosity on the keyboards and guitar both beyond description. So sad he was so underappreciated; as the pool shooting in the background demonstrates. Thanks for the great post; and thanks to the master for creating it!

you act like he was Chick Corea on the keyboards. Heck even the bar bums weren't impressed.

Well my guess this was some bar down south?..not the hotbed of openminded or "highbrow" jazzfusion admirers "skynard man! "

An amazing virtuoso. The venue was too small for his level of talent.

if anybody is interested, the keyboard shawn is using is a Kawai K4
