@doodsrslyWTF So you would have preferred I just sat there counting for 4 bars while the accompaniment that I didn't have beautifully didn't play in the background? To each their own I s'pose.
@DunkleMaterie117 The flute isn't broken, at least, not in the upper range. The airy sound is my playing style. It's from rolling in a bit more than the usual player and blowing down into the flute. It gives me a more complex sound. It's a common technique amongst Irish flute players. Thank you for noticing. :)
@AchingOvaries Erik Sampson from the Flutermaker ministries. Recommends that the blow hole be closer to the top of the flute, or nearer to the closed wall, This allows less air to escape and be more focused into the flute.
@TravelerWhereof There is definitely a proper distance from the closed wall. That's why any flute that's worth its weight in anything has an adjustable cork in the head joint. Metal boehm (standard band) flutes all come with cleaning rods. These rods have a notch on them that you insert into the head joint and look through the hole to make sure the cork in the right place.
Rolling in and out and where I blow into the hole is different than where the cork is positioned in the head joint.
@AchingOvaries Now I don't want to make any promise, but when I do make a couple of flutes, *in which will prolly sound alittle off or different compare to yours* I may consider sending one to you.
@TravelerWhereof That's wonderfully generous of you, but honestly, just posting videos of the progress you make will be plenty for me. I'd love to make instruments myself.
@AchingOvaries Well I can't promise that either. You see, even so I consider myself a good flute maker, I actually lack dexterity in my right hand, being born with half of all fingers but the thumb on my right hand. And by the looks of it, its like a 7hole flute (whereas there may be a thumbhole to shift it *If I got this right* between minor & major) with that said, we'll just have to see what happens. And I'm camera shy..
Very nice. seems like you mastered the ending of this song and it almost sounds perfect! I really enjoy listening to this song especially with the flute
@AchingOvaries Look up Desi Seery flutes. I actually don't recommend this flute at all. It costs about twice what it should and the low D doesn't speak loudly or easily. For an infinitely louder, easier to play, and all around better flute (cheaper too!) I recommend Casey Burns' Folk Flute. It's easy to google.
@oldsmanguy I retract my previous statement. Due to some recent discoveries, I cannot at all endorse Casey Burns flutes. If you purchase a Folk Flute, you'll likely get garbage. Contact me for more information if you're curious.
@AchingOvaries Seery flutes are actually not bad. Going on Chiff and Fipple forum, you'll see loads of people going 'doug tipple pvc flutes are great/better', because they play more easily. Well, tipple pvc flutes are for the more lazy person, prefer playing easy than having a flute which actually rewards the player when they improve.
I played the seery for about half a year, then moved on to a friend's Murray and I now have a fantastic Wilkes. But the Seery is such a great beginner's flute.
@deterdettol I have to disagree with your part about "when they improve" as I've had Grey Larsen, a world renowned Irish flute player, as well as all of the local professionals play it and they all struggle with it. I don't believe a person can improve beyond Grey Larsen. The flute itself has issues.
As for tipples, I've never liked them. I find the tone to be abhorrent.
@AchingOvaries Yes, the delrin one. I have the large holed, one-piece mid section one (can't call it Pratten, because it isn't, really.) Well, I don't know. I personally don't really like Grey's playing. I feel there are more fantastic players out there, with a much more compelling rhythm.
@AchingOvaries But I'm not saying that players of the Seery flute will improve beyond it, or that it's a fantastic flute too. I myself don't really like the Seery. I don't like its tone, the response isn't that great (despite the rectangularish, more forgiving (supposedly) hole, and the upper register is much of an effort, I must say. But because of it's difficulties, it pushes beginners, like it pushed me. This is what I meant as rewarding: a bitter medicine. Better taste, sweet results.
@deterdettol I will *definitely* give you that. It's done wonders for my lung capacity. Because of that flute, when I play my McGee it's like I never need to breathe.
@JonasOrlas Yeah, I get a dark sound out of flutes based a lot on my embouchure, but I also tend to gravitate towards the darker sounding instruments. (Busman whistle, McGee Grey Larsen Preferred flute, etc) (I would elaborate on the embouchure but it'd probably be boring to you)
And two votes for Frog, soooo...I think we have a winner. ^_^
That is beautiful! Great playing! Love the tone, I've got to find out more about irish flutes.

Would have been more pleasing to the ear if you kept to a rhythm instead of skipping around.

@doodsrslyWTF Have you heard the original? It does the same thing.

@AchingOvaries I have, in fact, heard the original--many times, in fact--which is how I know that you're skipping over rests.

I hear a windy sound aside the "melody". The flute is broken in some way?
But it was very passionate and slightly more mysterious then most instrumental versions of Fans here on YouTube! : )

Hey, you might remember me as the guy asking you to take some rough measurement of your Irsh flute, a while back.
Well do you think I can have a copy you recorded Scars Left by Time on?

Wasn't bad. What I don't get is why people don't play the high note at the end.
