Amazing work, and all the more so given the tight shooting schedules and budgets given to any film highlighting black artists back then. There were lots of opportunities in this routine for the Nicholas Brothers to get hurt, to take falls, or to nail some poor musician in the head with a tap-shoe cleat. But it all plays out brilliantly.
oh my god!!!! this is the video i've been lookin for, i saw it once and could never find it. i can't give it enough adjectives, just one hell of a performance by two of, imho, the most talented hoofers that ever lived.
This clip is so amazing. No matter how many times i watch this i'm simply blown away in their performance. To master the tap as a duo and come up with these almost un-human acrobatics is more then words can express. My favorite part is @ 3:39, the control and flexability. And at the end sliding down the ramp. Made the whole routine Gorgeous!!!! ty Nicholas Brothers for a excellent performance !!! 5/5 x's eternity
First watched this when I was about the 90's when I was a kid and WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!! Still as amazing as ever...the band, THE Cab and WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW the brothers !!! As usually, not as recognised as "others" of the time like Fred Astaire Gene Kelly etc but the brothers were without comparison even CLOSE the GREATEST!!!!
The late Gregory Hines said that the only problem in making a movie about them is that no one can do the dancing they did. The absolute greatest tap dancers of the 20th century.
Very possibly the greatest dance routine in film history. There are four names on the Rushmore of male dancers from the Golden Age of the Hollywood musical. Their names are Gene, Fred, Harold and Fayard. The latter pair got there despite the unwritten rule that they could never, never be leading men. The human form moving through space, and the human spirit soaring over barriers strewn in its path by naked greed, tortured guilt and blind hatred, simply does not get more beautiful than this.
just a real classic......why oh why can't people relearn this type of truly soul music again..I look forward to the day it all comes back...just pure class....this is one golden clip thanks to you for posting.
There are no words to describe the absolute magic that happens when you watch these two wonders. Wow...this performance is just magnificent, the music was genius, and one of the greatest dance numbers ever. Wow...I can't say that enough.
kanker dope shit ouwe teriiiiiing eeey this is the shit this is one of my favorite perfomancess ot the NB's and check out "back from Argentine way" thats the shit for real..
Everyone here just reiterated all of my own thoughts. Their performance is so astounding decades later that I could not ever imagine watching it live! Perhaps some of my amazement is due to such acts being scarce today whereas it was popular then? Not sure but this is absolutely amazing! 5 stars x 2!
Also, you have to understand the era. If young Black kids across America found there to be millions made dancing TODAY, Rap would be immediately replaced by tap.........this was the ONLY form of entertainment Blacks were allowed to perform under their own autonomy and exclusive creativity, so it was dance ....or nothing at all.
Gene Kelly was not ready nor prepared for these two guys. He wouldn't even speak about them after they performed together. I guess he was overwhelmed and not forwarned. Talent!!
The Nicholas were truly AMAZING!!! Especially given the time in our society when it was socially acceptable to discriminate. They were FANTASTIC and like many artists of the day, their talent was just too great to hold them back. Thanks for posting this.
The correct question would be, "have there been ANY other race of people to do this EVER, besides AA's"? The answer would be a resounding NO. So, with that said, it's not surprising that you don't see this degree of talent and artistry present today. But if you are truly interested in the current day tap arena, see Savion Glover .........he comes closest.
