Lekoman - don't give out bad legal advice, you are wrong on the law. A public figure has to prove a person making a specific allegation, not a matter of opinion, or vaguely worded criticism, like "it's pay to play" in a particular city govt, has either said something they know to be false, or acted in "reckless disregard of the truth". in other words, they had no real reason to think what they were saying was true, but said it anyway. You've badly mistated the law.

Well, actually, slander and libel *are* against the law. You can't go making false allegations about people - public official or no. If you do, they can sue you, and if you can't prove in court that your allegations are true, they can win. You'll get a cease and desist order from the court, and you'll get slapped with owing some pretty heavy penalties.

I don't know this woman, and I don't know if she's guilty of what she's accused of or not. But this guy had better hope she is for his own sake.
