  • Damn!

  • A big train for big men.

  • That was impressive at the beginning, seeing the whole length and everything! That's the only problem with Railways in Britain, very very few places where you can get than sense of scale like you can in US

  • love the heavy breathing sounds....

  • Great Videos, Skip!! So, do you work for the UP steam crew?

  • HUGELY cool.

  • Fantastic in the landscape!

Heel mooie en karakteristiek-landschappelijke opname. Dit is stoom! (Dutch).

  • must be one of the best steam vids ever thanks

  • anda mais rapido do os de São Paulo

  • Breathe this :)

  • Shining Time Station comes to mind seeing this.

  • Very nicely done. One of my favorite shots of a great 4-8-8-4. Many thanks and continued success in the new year, 2012. What a treat indeed.

  • It kills me to see a diesel locomotive out there with it :/

  • @danielchance really steames more power ful

  • @danielchance The diesel is only used for the electric breaks on the coaches. They weren't around when that train was built!

  • @ap0calypt1ca No. Not at all.

  • Very nice video ty for posting this love seeing the classic engines!

  • One of the best runby videos I have seen! Awesome work! Awesome loco and train! Thank you.

  • Where is this railway crossing?

    (sorry for my bad english)

  • they see me rollin'

    they lovin'

  • my favourite steamers would have to be UP 844, King Edward, Big Boy and the A4s

  • Sorry I did not read the description,Still amazing.........…thank you .

  • Awesome Footage! I could hear someone starting their engine to go chase it to the next crossing LOL! I saw a UP challenger come through Youngstowns Ohio on the old B&O when I was a kid and it is still one of the coolest things ive ever seen.

  • Beautiful train.

  • Is this a private Union Pacific train? Im confused about where this train runs and the UP executive train...is it just ran for the UP CEO and people?

  • @jockster33 Union Pacific has this locomotive on it's official locomotive roster. It was built back in 1944 for the UP and has never been retired. Today, they use it for both executive AND railfan trips. On rare occasion, they will even use it for freight service. Like if it's between it's runs and being moved from point A to point B, rather than send it light, they will hook it up to a freight train make it earn some money. They do the same with their other steam locomotive as well.

  • I LOVE THE SMELL OF DIESEL IN THE MORNING................nice video love to be on board that train.

  • I found another good vid Skip

feel free to slow down i am exhuasted :P lol

    --UNIONPACIFIC1

  • the diesel supplies power to the passenger coaches..for lights heating/cooling etc....the locomotive makes more than enough power to move this train..its an Alco product its wheel arrangement 4-8-4 is known as Northern on most US roads

  • do "they".....sorry

  • ive noticed a couple of videos had the same thing....a diesel engine behind the steamengine, do that not make enough power alone?

  • Thumbs down for pollution but Thumbs up for Awesome looking smoke. HELL YEAH

  • @mysterykid2011 most of the smoke is steam.

Steam is exhausted through the smoke box and stack to make a draft for hotter fire.

You wouldn't see so much on a warm day.

That old 4.8.4 is a beauty, unsure if its a northern, alco, or baldwin

  • Majestic

  • fantastic train

  • This is a really thrilling video, Skip. Thanks for posting it.

  • Who gives a flyin f* what it runs on but why all random.. its got to be for a reason besides the bs energy source

  • @calloway322 Not true ... see that black smoke? That's #5 fuel oil. This thing does not run on coal.

  • Poluição... puluição merda de poluição.

  • She'll be coming down the rail when she comes!

  • hell yeah!!!!!

  • Train roll on, on down the line, please take me far away. Cause I fell the wind blow, outside my door means I'm leaving my woman at home. Lord and!

  • TAKE THAT TREE HUGGERS LOL

  • she is fast!!!

  • beautifull sound!!

  • I cent believe california allowed this beast in their state lol. Awesome !!

  • Amazing!

  • Great capture Skip - even though have heard it a lot of times before. This is a video I always keep returning to watch.

  • greenpeace eat a dick...

  • @morace250 hi contact me skype thomas.greenwood1 on skypes i can eat your dick on cam pls so hot cam show 4 men or old men to much happy to see you on there sweet prinse loves <4 xxx <3<32<3

  • @morace250 If Obama could, he'd eliminate steam locomotives too - as he essentially did with the space program. He hates anything that rings of Americana or anything that makes America exceptional or great....too western and innovatative. Did you expect anything less from a Kenyan?

  • @morace250 They should love it. Steam is the only prime mover that can run on a renewable, wood.

  • @morace250 amen brother, I wish more Class 1's would use steam for PR tools. Skip great work as usual.

  • I need a ring tone from: 1:00-1:25

  • that's very good!!! :D

  • now that is a beautiful site to see history at its finest

  • You know, back in the 90s, someone asked Steve Lee what the fastest he'd ever gotten 844 up to was. His reply was, "Ask me once I've retired."

Now that you've retired, Steve, if you're out there, could you tell us? After all, you don't risk any repercussions now...

  • @rdfox76 No wonder. The thing is rated to safely travel at 120, and it probably can top that. The fastest speed limit I've heard of in that part of the country is 80.

  • @15nyonker Back in the 70s UP still had some 90 mph territory, but you're right, he probably was WAY the hell beyond the limit at least once.

I do recall someone saying that on a stretch of 90 mph track, he counted mileposts at a speed that equated to about 110 mph on an 8444 excursion in the 70s once...

  • @15nyonker What'd I'd really like to know is what is the fastest that the 844 has ever traveled...

  • VERY COOL! THANKS FOR SHOOTING THIS ONE!

  • Great to see the old girl getting to stretch her legs like this.

  • Smokescreen! It must be the Secret Police of Russia!!!

  • No wonder Icebergs melt down ;)

  • steam forever thanks

  • pure pollution

  • why is the steam loco needed when there is a diesel being towed?

  • @CaptainFelixTan1 Extra insurance in case the steam engine has a mechanical failure. They can get the train to a siding or repair facility. Don't want the train blocking the mainline when UP has freight to move.

  • @oversearailway then in the first place why not just use the diesel train?? sorry im not to professional to understand this but just interested. Thx!

  • @CaptainFelixTan1 This steam locomotive is part of the UP railroad's historical and technical collection. Most of the time the engine is used as a public relations tool because people like steam locomotives. It is also a historical nod to the company's history (140+ years). Most trains carry more than one locomotive as insurance, including freight trains. Blocking a mainline waiting for a rescue engine can take hours (5+) to show up and switch out. Hope this helps.

  • @oversearailway that makes sense now... GREAT THX!!!!!!!!

  • @CaptainFelixTan1 Its not being towed. Its pushing the steam train while the steam train pulls. The steam trains aren't getting any younger, so they don't run them at full power anymore. The other engine is a helper engine, and yes it can be used to get the steam train out of trouble if it breaks down, but, that's a rare scenario.

  • @Classicnovaguy thx:) its a nice scene though...(but the diesel spoilt it in some way)

  • @Classicnovaguy Nah, the diesel is just used as a generator and emergency power.

  • @318Captain ah, sure....the new answer is, if you wanna know, call union pacific because everyone seems to know the answer.

  • @Classicnovaguy good point...someone should do that.

  • @Classicnovaguy In general, steam excursions have a diesel in the consist primarily as "protection power" to limp the train someplace out of the way should the steamer have a breakdown. Unless the train is overloaded, they won't be using it for power under normal circumstances; UP has even been known to put them in dynamic braking mode to make the steamer work harder and put on a better show!

When SP4449 went across the US in 2008, the Amtrak diesel also provided electricity for the passengers

  • awesomeee

  • People! Do this: Mute the video and put this song while you watch: Lady, Lady, Lady (by Joe esposito) on a second youtube tab. I watched flashdance before and it's got a lot of smoke (which I love) and it kind of matches with this video as well, and the song seems to give you a little love boost for trains... See what you think. I'm going to do it for the second time now! lol!

  • ¿en EEUU todavía funcionan regularmente locomotoras a vapor?

  • Really enjoyed this video, dramatic footage.

  • Wow - great video. But if that amount of smoke was normal, it's no wonder they got rid of steam locos. (I think that smoke must've been done for the benefit of the photogs - a good fireman would keep a clean stack. Smoke is waste of fuel)

  • was this passing through oregon I noticed snow

  • I DONT CARE HOW MUCH ELECTRICAL TRAIN THERE Is. STEAM TRAINS ARE STILL THA BOSS :D <3

  • Gorgeous

  • I like the Whistle!

  • I don't like the whistle

  • This train wins ' The Polluter of The Year Award'.

  • @gedebage Think again. The majority of that is harmless steam :)

  • This makes me want to move out west, where you can see trains coming from miles away. A whole different expereince than what I see here in PA.

  • DAMN I HATE SEEING THIS CAUSE IT REMINDS ME OF HOW WE ONCE WERE THR GREASTEST NATION ON EARTH - I LOVE MY COUNTRY AND HATE WHATS HAPPENING TO IT - IF I WAS A MILLONARE I WOULD RUN THIS THRU SAN FRANCISCO CLOSE AS CAN BE BY PELOSIS HOUSE AND BLOW FIRE AND SMOKE TILL SHE COVERD HER FRONT YARD AND LET THE WHISTLE BLOW-

  • it is a fast locomotive when you it goes past as it should be because it is a fast locomotive but hard to operate because of the gauges and levers

  • good video and great sound.

    greetings from germany

  • I love to tradition at work. That locomotive old but he's not out! Go Steam Go! Haul That Diesel Around!

  • lost in the woods sent me here

  • @knuckleHead12354 This sent me to lost in the woods

  • God what a miserable landscape!

  • i have a cuestion, why the diesel train is pushing the locomotive?

  • @josh84000 The diesel is there to protect the interests of the railroad. It is unacceptable for the main line to be fouled by a broken down steam locomotive.

  • @spencermcgrew Sadly, the diesel is more likely to fail than the steam. Still I remember this type of traction as a small kid with the 9Fs that powered limestone trains in particular in rural Derbyshire

  • @josh84000 The little stations that had coal and water to resupply them (think: Old West) along the railways are long, long, long gone.

  • Its nice to see the old girl where she belongs out on the rails with her throttle open and her pistons pounding.

  • looks like the flying scottsman

  • Fantastic footage!

  • there are 7 idiots ............

  • Magnificent photography!

  • holy hogwarts harry!

  • man this has to polute!

  • @darsus19 im sure it is but nobody on this side of the world is using steam engines. so whatever pollution this old bad boy is pushing out is nothing compared to what we are doing everyday.

  • is there more than one UP#844

  • Little Max is totally addicted to this clip! Chuff Chuff! Wooooooooooooo! Woooooooooooo! ... change nappy

  • Awesome video! I just got to see the Union Pacific 844 in Bald Knob, AR this week!!!! Very awesome train!

  • Awesome video! I just got to see the Union Pacific 844 in Bald Knob, AR this week!!!! Very awesome train!

  • Seven people didn't like this video??? I highly recommend they immediately seek help.

  • My previous post should have referred to "A1 (and not "A3") pacific Tornado - sorry!

  • What a fabulous depiction of steam in action - in truly inspiring surroundings!

In the U.K. we are into steam preservation in a big way and HRH Prince Charles

was on hand when enthusiast-built steam engine A3 pacific Tornado was given

its send-off - built solely through love, commitment and grit. I was a boy in the 50s

when steam was still the primary locomotive power here...so many memories.

Thanks for a great "post". Songs of all sorts inspired by trains are on

    "Ride The Train" CDs.

  • why does it have a water tanker

  • @01721jh because there aren't water towers alongside tracks much anymore... they've got to carry more water onboard nowadays

  • "Boy, she sure is arunning full"

  • i would love to see the inside of those cars.

  • The U.S., built on train tracks! I live in a small town in Ohio and we were used as a major train port, a vital connection to Detroit and Chicago! Our school mascot is the locomotive!

  • isent 844 in omaha on display?

  • @joeu5431

Nah She's (i think) the only steam locomotive whos never been retired.

  • @3985gtasa one of 2. UP has 2 challengers.

  • Great Great Great Video!!

  • I gotta ask, what video camera are you using for this great footage?

  • The diesel engine behind 844 is used primarily for braking because electrical braking is more powerful and efficient than air-operated shoe brakes, by themselves. Electric braking is achieved by reversing the poles on the diesel engine's wheel motors, making them act as generators, which creates powerful drag and the resultant braking action. The electricity generated by the motors in generator mode is routed thorugh heavy electrical conduits to roof-mounted resistor units.

  • @Shew8619 You are partially correct. The primary reason for bringing a Diesel is in case something goes wrong with the 844 and it has to shut down - They have to clear the Mainline or they get fined Bigtime.

(Orange Empire Railroad Museum has popped staybolts & lost fire while out on the mainline with Ventura County #2 under steam. Diesel helper rescue.)

The Diesel's dynamic braking is an asset, but the 844 can shift the Johnson Bar part-way into Reverse and use steam for dynamic braking.

  • Glad I was around as a child to see these awesome machines dance on steel tracks

across the southwest. My first train ride was on a troop train heading to New Mexico.

Just a year old. The smells, sound, rocking motion are something that is missed today.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • WOAH!

  • 285,610 views are mine.... I've watched this video so many times.

  • I could charge to California myself...

  • Very beautiful whistle and smoke. Really miss the good old days. Just wondering, does UP have passenger trains? (I'm from Asia..)

  • @24121TunPerak Other than excursion trains, they don't have any passenger trains. Amtrak provides passenger rail service in the US, and UP doesn't really like Amtrak.

  • This, this is a train!

  • Carbon foot print....................? =p

  • NSHorseheadSD70 zuzulo56 Gooseman241

    tyvm 4 all your replies

    lol :)

  • OH YEA! STEAM STEEL AND HYEA..............SPEED!

  • very beautiful train

  • now thats a big train!!!

  • no fucking way... they have videos of trains now :O

  • How far is this from the middle of nowhere?

  • I really liked the long-distance view as the train made its way through the curve and towards the camera.

  • Wow! This is amazing, you need to do more shots like this!

  • Nice well shot video. Good job.

  • Nice!

  • Greetings from steamtube :)

  • this is like john ford movies, the smoke in the horizon, beautiful....!

  • there was no dynamic braking in the old days. So how did the steamers get down the hill ?

  • @916fanatic1 With er... conventional brakes...

  • THATS HOW YOU DO IT! Throttle all the way out, whistle chord all the way down, and let her talk to you ALL THE WAY!!! AMAZING!

  • Awsome video, and the ES44AC diesel behid the 844 is there because of insurance. The train has to have backup power. The diesels are also used as dynamic brake power on the downgrades.

  • im sure that diesel was there in case the steam engine broke down or something

    ...thats just my thinking

  • @greenmatrix151023387 Notice that the track is on a level grade, and the diesel locomotive is rumbling noisily as it goes past the camera. Add in the fact that the steam locomotive is putting up a lot of smoke (indicative of the amount of tractive effort it is putting out).

I think they have the dynamic brakes turned on, forcing the steam crew to work their butts off. :P

  • @NightmareKato

    kk

thx 4 the reply appreicate it

  • @greenmatrix151023387 It is climbing up Sherman Hill which stretches from Cheyenne to Laramie, Wyoming. The original line was constructed through Sherman, Wyoming, in 1868. It was the highest point on the transcontinental railroad at 8,247 feet above sea level

  • @SkipW

wow thx 4 the reply and info

  • @SkipW whats this got to do with the diesel(maybe there is a relation and im too ignorant on the subject)

  • @SkipW That's only a fifteen car train, u can't tell me that the most powerful steam locomotive operating today can't handle that? even at a pretty good grade???

  • @greenmatrix151023387 Ditto for just about every log-distance, consist on the rails today. The "Insurance-Unit".

  • @greenmatrix151023387 Insurance says train must be able to get off main line in event of break down.

  • @Gooseman241 Insurance? You mean the railroad's insurance company demands this? LOL. C'mon. Be serious. Let's say this train stalled w/o the backup power and resulted in a temporary backup of freight operations. Do you think the railroad would file an insurance claim? LOL

  • @greenmatrix151023387 In fact the diesel engine is there to help up and down hills. On plains, it's just being pulled.

  • @rodrigorosatoalves

kk thx 4 the info and reply

    its very much appreciated

  • @greenmatrix151023387 it's to improve the efficiency of the steam locomotive so it doesn't burn through as much coal so it can make the long distances.

  • @TandemDawgBMG

kk ty vm for the info and the reply

    its appreciated :)

  • @greenmatrix151023387 The ES44AC was there for dynamic braking on hills.

  • @greenmatrix151023387 The diesel is there to help the engine pull the train. Their called helper engines.

  • @Dinosorable

and everyone else who sent me replys

ty all very very much lol :)

  • @greenmatrix151023387 What does that mean?
