I'm a die hard aggie fan. Through thick and thin, I'm an aggie. But hats off to one of the most classy coaches in Mack brown, and the longhorn band. Gig'em and hook'em
@13VO are y'all going to steal our horse again and spray paint aTm on it and kill another one? I don't even think aggies know why techies don't like them. Learn about the history.
im a longhorn, but im not ashamed to admit that its just a rivalry, i have not hatred whatsoever for a&m and i'm proud of our boys for showin that when it comes down to it we're all on the same team. we'll see yall later this year for 1 hell of a game!
The comments on this board are just outright sickening. I don't know how anyone could let hatred of a rival stoop to that level, particularly in their rival's time of need.
I am a Longhorn, and I will always be a Longhorn. I can't stand the Aggies, but I stand beside them when they're in need. Hook 'em Horns and gig 'em Aggies!
I was in my dorm room when I heard a bunch of girls screaming and crying and running down the hall.
It was then when they told me that the bonfire logs collapsed.
I looked out and saw the disaster....and busted out laughing!! Man...that was so funny...all the twisted bodies and blood and screaming by hysterical co-eds.
So funny....I wish they would bring it back so we could have another collapse. I would put it on You Tube...LOL
Though neither a Longhorn or Aggie, I lived in Texas 13 years. UT and A&M have a great rivalry and each think their school and teams are best. They rib each other terribly, but the aggression is left to the players on the field. I have never witnessed any true hatred towards one another. The tribute by the band was beautiful. I read that the A&M students by tradition only sit when the Longhorn band plays. They stood during this awe-inspiring tribute.
@kfederer This is true. I've missed only a handful of games since I began to buy season tickets in the mid 80s and this is one of only two times I've ever seen the student section stand for another band(2001 game after 9/11 - OK State band is the other). While we are bitter rivals on the field, we are friends and family off of it and I have the utmost respect for the Longhorn Band for this touching tribute. Hook 'Em Horns and Gig 'Em Ags. Proud to be a Texan!
Shame this has been hijacked for flaming. As a Horn, I was proud that the band chose to honor those killed in the bonfire. I love the rivalry, but we're all Texans in the end. God bless the state, UT and A&M.
"two institutions are great rivals, but more importantly, great friends who have the highest amount of respect for each other. may the longhorn spirit and the spirit of aggieland never die."
powerful words. 10 years later, this performance is just as powerful.
Thank you University of Texas. Thanks and Gig 'em.

You could also only see a little bit of it, but the LHB removed their hats when they were done playing TAPS. That's essentially the highest gesture of respect LHB shows, aside obviously from playing Amazing Grace and TAPS. And, LHB didn't march off the field to the fight song, they simply marched off to a snare tap cadence.

I was blessed to be in the stadium that day and not a dry eye in the house for sure. What an amazing moment in time this was. Made you proud to be a Texan no matter what colors you wore.
Ever since that day I have resisted using the term "hate" to describe the UT / A&M rivalry. That word might apply to UT / OU or to A&M / Tech. But it does NOT apply to UT / A&M. Hopefully the moment is never forgotten and the special bond between the schools lasts.
this is Texas class at its best-from both Aggies and Longhorns... As a longhorn myself, I feel proud to be apart of this rivalry that in a tragedy like this, we can come together-no matter the colors.
I am a die hard Aggie fan, but when I saw for the first time, I couldn't help but cry. Its wonderful to see how the University of Texas paid their respects to one of their most fierce rivals.
We may be rivals, but we are Texans. We are both apart of the greatest state in the world.
This was the best half time performance of all time... Still brings tears to my eyes..what a great way to pay tribute to all that lost thier lives. Thank you Longhorn band
I have always likened the TEXAS-a&m rivalry to brothers that can't seem to get along. You fight and bicker all the time. But in the end, you are still brothers. Most of us have family and friends from the oter side. I graduated from TEXAS in 99 and most of my family went to a&m. I hate it when we lost to a&m, but on that day in 99, it really didnt bother me.
to whoever gave the thumbs down, "good bull" is aggie talk for something that represents the aggie spirit in a positive way. he was not calling it b.s. if thats what you were thinking
@HamBurglerMan just so you know, in aggie terms there are two phrases: good bull and bad bull. obviously good bull is an act of goodness and bad bull is a bad act. just thought i'd let you know before you go judging people.
I remember seeing this on television back in '99. It sent chills up and down my spine then, and still does when I watch these clips now. (Too bad the networks no longer broadcast the band half-time shows.) Just goes to show you that even though we're rivals, when push comes to shove, we're all Texans and we will stick together in adversity. Way to go band! You make me proud to be a Longhorn fan.
As A horn living in aggieland...i can tell you that this Ags respect the heck out of UT. Though they are rivals...they are brothers. I have never seen how some of the Ags pulling for UT on red river rivalry game against OU. SO there, I can tell you that they (Ags) will do the same. Infact, maybe even more. Good luck Aggies on this year's football. Take it easy on Sherman!
I am class of '02 and was at this Longhorn Band performance. That is the best I have ever hear Amazing Grace sound. To this day, I still come to tears and goosebumps when I hear video/sound clips of the Longhorn Band playing Amazing Grace as they did. I have no doubt in my mind that MY Aggie community would stand behind Longhorns in their time of need. Please, if you have an issue you don't understand, do not waste other human beings time by sharing it.
I think that the Aggies would do something like this for UT. I know the two schools hate eachother but there comes a time when its appropriate for a rivalry and a time when you put the bad blood aside and help the other one through a time of need. A rivalry is not just someone you love to beat, but its someone who is there to pick you up when you fall and i would expect nothing less from the Aggies...
I remember watching this live on tv. You see how respectful the longhorns are? Would the aggies have done it for the longhorns if something terrible like that happened? I know I'm gonna get a lot of smack when I say this, but I pretty much know they wouldnt.
How could you possibly "pretty much know they wouldn't?" Your comment is not only an insult to the Aggie family but to the human spirit. I would like to think, Aggie or Longhorn or neither, that humans would respond in kind to any tragedy as what happened with the bonfire
that is the most ignorant thing i have heard in a long time. there is a much bigger picture in life than a school rivalry. i am "pretty much" sure that anyone would do that when something like that happens.
you are a moron if you think A&M wouldnt do the same in return. how dare you say otherwise. you probably have nothing to do with either institution. if you did, you would understand.
As A horn living in Aggieland...i can tell you that this Ags respect the heck out of UT. Though they are rivals...they are brothers. I have never seen how some of the Ags pulling for UT on red river rivalry game against OU. Come and check the local sports club during the games. SO there, I can tell you that they (Ags) will do the same. Infact, maybe even more. Good luck Aggies on this year's football. Take it easy on Sherman!
You're wrong and it's sad that you actually thought of something like this. My only guess is you are an outsider with no perspective in this rivalry whatsoever. While there are jabs and things can get heated, this rivalry always remains respectful which is what makes it one of the best in the country.
Then you "pretty much" have no idea what you're talking about, because as an Aggie myslef--no matter how much we can despise t.u. at times--we're all Texans and still have the utmost respect for their institution.
My sister is a senior at Texas and I'm a student at A&M. The rivalry is real, but the respect is greater.
I am proud to be an Aggie, and equally proud to be a Longhorn sibling.
Yes, Kevin Sedatole was director then and is a good man of integrity. Disappointing loss for UT's band and the Baylor program as he is now in Michigan.
it may be tense on Gameday and we may not ever get along, but a gracious gesture like shows outsiders just how much the aggies and longhorns do respect each other... even if it dosent always seem that way
You would never see LSU or Florida show this much class as the Texas band did on that day. The LSU fans would have been mocking the fallen aggies.....
You are wrong about that. LSU gave a tribute to VT just last season that was very touching. LSU had been the recipients of incredible hospitality following the hurricanes and were happy to return the gesture.
That was a sad event in A&M history. I may be a UT fan, but beneath the rivalry, we are all Americans and Texans. God bless the fallen in this terrible tragedy and God bless the Lone Star State.
absolute class right there. I'm a diehard longhorn all my life, bleeding burnt orange and all - but this gives me goosebumps. Hook'em Ags, and Gig 'em Horns.
I've been an Aggie my entire life. Even when I was a kid, I called the tu band the Pansy Band for those ridiculous "Will Rodgers" uniforms.
But even to this day, watching this brings tears to my eyes. I was a friend of Michael Eubanks, who died in the tragedy. I was at the game, and it was the Best Worst day of my life.
I'm a Longhorn through and through and every year we play A&M I hate 'em can't stand Aggies but this right here almost made me wanna cry. This brought Aggies and Longhorns together forever. One thing neither of these programs can say about the other is classless. The Longhorns did this for the Aggies and the Aggies would do the same. If you noticed I thought it was pretty cool they had Texas and A&M flags being held up right next to each other. Kind of sums this whole video up.
I was the chairperson for the Aggie Bonfire Coalition that year, and I was there the day the Longhorn band did this and they had everyone in my organization in tears while they were playing. Even though our schools have such a big rivalry, it's amazing to see that we can all come together to show support in times of reverence. Just because the rivalry is there, doesn't mean we don't care for each other!
You can Gig 'Em, you can hook 'em, but every heart must BLESS them!
& "hated" Texas.Their great Dir. Emeritus, Vince DiNino is a dear friend.Game Day 1999 Texas Band honored the Texas A&M bonfire tragedy with AMAZING GRACE & TAPS. That was THE CLASS ACT of all times among college bands. The Longhorn Band expressed so beautifully for all of us the empathy, sadness, respect & yes, even love for all Texas A&M stands for.Thank you Texas Aggies for the Spirit of Aggieland.
18 november 1999, the bonfire built annually by Texas A&M students throughout the fall semester and lit before the annual rivalry game against t.u., fell killing 12 students. 12 students who made a sacrifice which embodies everything that being a part of the 12th man means. Never forget them Aggies.
It was an awesome sight...reminds us all that football is just a game and there are more important things in life. I am an aggie and lost a friend in the tragedy, but gained a lot more when the longhorns came to town that year. Gig 'em Ags...and Hook 'em Horns.
On The field we want to beat each other into the ground, but in life, we all have a little bit of bevo and reveille in us we respect each other and our lives. GIG EM AG'S and Hook EM Horns
I can still remember that game like it happened yesterday. Before and after the game, there were longhorns embracing aggies. it was a great act of respect from a very classy institution. i will always remember the events that happened that year. thanks for the support horns... God Bless the great state of Texas.
Wow, why don't the rich conservative Aggie Alumni give their money to do something useful rather than burn it up, waste wood and potentially kill more kids?
A&M should have been closed permanently after those kids died.
Believe me, if those kids had been killed at say an Ozzie Osborne concert, all of the conservatives who support A&M would be calling for a ban on rock music.
I'm a bleeding-maroon Aggie (Class of 91 -- WHOOP!), and I have to say this memorial by the Longhorn Band was one of the classiest acts I've ever seen. Much appreciated, y'all.
Nuff Respect to Texas A&M. True class from the University of Texas to their most respected rivals. May those whose lives were lost be honored through this true class presentation. HOOK EM HORNS AND FIGHT ON AGGIES!!
I've always pulled hard for A&M, especially when it came to playing the U.T. However, my impression was forever changed the week following the bonfire tragedy. Not only did was the U.T. Band's performance inspiring, but the School's actions throughout proved that you are a class group. Many other schools offered their condolences, but the University of Texas went above and beyond. Your video is a keeper -- thanks for sharing it!
Amen bro! Longhorn Pride and honor! A&M earns all of our respect bro after the tragic A&M bonfire accident. I am so PROUD TO BE A LONGHORN FAN! Jah-Love A&M!
Definitely showed alot of class on behalf of the Longhorns. It was awesome how these two rivals set aside their "hate" for such an occasion. I think the rivalry died down a little after UT showed A&M so much support during the Bonfire tragedy.
ya if it wuz Tech... they'd do something gay... So I have 2 thank UT for being classy... Just remember... it ends on the football field XD... WHOOP! XD
This rivalry will NEVER be forgotten. As a Longhorn fan, I say thanks to the TRUE class of the A&M fans. I have always likened the TEXAS-a&m rivalry to brothers that can't seem to get along. You fight and bicker all the time. But in the end, you are still brothers. Most of us have family and friends from the oter side. I graduated from TEXAS in 99 and most of my family went to a&m. I hate it when we lost to a&m, but on that day in 99, it really didnt bother me.

that was so moving. when in hard times, even UT and A&M have respect for eachother. i was there, and will never forget that they did that. Ag '01

GigEmAgs2011 3 years ago 17
to whoever gave the thumbs down, "good bull" is aggie talk for something that represents the aggie spirit in a positive way. he was not calling it b.s. if thats what you were thinking

@GigEmAgs2011 good class, asshole
HamBurglerMan 1 year ago
@HamBurglerMan just so you know, in aggie terms there are two phrases: good bull and bad bull. obviously good bull is an act of goodness and bad bull is a bad act. just thought i'd let you know before you go judging people.

That was pure class. Nothing else needs to be said.

Please, if you have an issue you don't understand, do not waste other human beings time by sharing it.
chrmorri 3 years ago 4
I think that the Aggies would do something like this for UT. I know the two schools hate eachother but there comes a time when its appropriate for a rivalry and a time when you put the bad blood aside and help the other one through a time of need. A rivalry is not just someone you love to beat, but its someone who is there to pick you up when you fall and i would expect nothing less from the Aggies...

I remember watching this live on tv. You see how respectful the longhorns are? Would the aggies have done it for the longhorns if something terrible like that happened? I know I'm gonna get a lot of smack when I say this, but I pretty much know they wouldnt.
rockergirl83 3 years ago
How could you possibly "pretty much know they wouldn't?" Your comment is not only an insult to the Aggie family but to the human spirit. I would like to think, Aggie or Longhorn or neither, that humans would respond in kind to any tragedy as what happened with the bonfire
jmd3407 3 years ago 7
that is the most ignorant thing i have heard in a long time. there is a much bigger picture in life than a school rivalry. i am "pretty much" sure that anyone would do that when something like that happens.
nobodylisten2techno 3 years ago 2
Knowing the two leaders of the Aggie band for several years now, yes they would have come up with something duly appropriate.
BosPercussion 3 years ago 2
you are a moron if you think A&M wouldnt do the same in return. how dare you say otherwise. you probably have nothing to do with either institution. if you did, you would understand.

You're wrong and it's sad that you actually thought of something like this. My only guess is you are an outsider with no perspective in this rivalry whatsoever. While there are jabs and things can get heated, this rivalry always remains respectful which is what makes it one of the best in the country.

In response to rockergirl83:
Then you "pretty much" have no idea what you're talking about, because as an Aggie myslef--no matter how much we can despise t.u. at times--we're all Texans and still have the utmost respect for their institution.
My sister is a senior at Texas and I'm a student at A&M. The rivalry is real, but the respect is greater.
I am proud to be an Aggie, and equally proud to be a Longhorn sibling.
Thanks and Gig 'Em.

You would never see LSU or Florida show this much class as the Texas band did on that day. The LSU fans would have been mocking the fallen aggies.....
mjgdogs 3 years ago 3
You are wrong about that. LSU gave a tribute to VT just last season that was very touching. LSU had been the recipients of incredible hospitality following the hurricanes and were happy to return the gesture.

From an Aggie Cadet to the Longhorn Band, thank you for your respect.
However it is sad that it takes death for rivals to treat eachother kindly.

As a former cadet, member of the Aggie Band, and cadet working stack the night it fell, I appreciate the Longhorn Band for that halftime performance.
As for the above comment, it is sad that you have that kind of mentality. On a whole, there is always a level of respect between Aggies and Longhorns.

Well then I guess I just have to see it to believe it. I am a natural born cynic. Sorry.
