This movie was so insulting to the veterans. As a Vietnam War reenactor I resent this movie. It portrayed all the vets as potheads, baby killers and mama rapers. And the VC/NVA were all portrayed as banzai screaming stereotypes.

There's an idiot on the imdb boards called calsharksfan,who claims this joke of a film is superior to full metal jacket.He says full metal jacket talks about the 1000 yard stare,but platoon shows it! LOL,sheen has the same dopey look throughout the film.And at the end,his little fist pump doesn't show a guy who you believe went through war,it looks like a guy watching his buddy pop a wheelie on a motorcycle.Frankly,ANYONE who considers this film superior to full metal jacket,has no credibility.

@TheGatorfan93 Full Metal Jacket is vastly overrated, dude, try watching past the 45 minute mark...you probably don't (like most people). Once they get out of boot camp the movie becomes very pedestrian...and very forgettable. Platoon is a great movie from beginning to end with great performances. I think you're confusing charlie sheen now that has the same dopey look, back then, he was a very good young actor.

@AlbertEinsteinJr I love the vietnam section of full metal jacket,its far from pedestrian and forgettable.It has just as much iconic dialouge as the 1st act in boot camp.The only weakness is in the middle,because it can't match the power of the boot camp and sniper scenes.But it has some great scenes(the door gunner,the two hookers,the mass grave)The only people who like the first half of full metal jacket,i have zero respect for their taste in films.And modine looks like oliver next to sheen

@AlbertEinsteinJr Platoon is a horrid film.Its 2hrs of unintentional laughs,sheen's performance his narration,to bertenger's menacing looks,and scar,dafoe charging v.c like he's han solo,to his death scene,to the one dimensional characters,''drug addicts ''good guys'',the ''bad guys'' are ''southern drunks''.Every black soldier is either a drug addict or coward,or bothFACT.The music,the predictible plot.It's like a bad b-movie about vietnam.Full metal jacket is satire,and its STILL more real.

@TheGatorfan93 You don't like Oliver Stone's portrayal of vietnam as he experienced it...it's that simple. Overall,Full metal jacket is a good movie...but uneven (as you admitted). If that's your favorite film ...fine. But to condemn anyone who doesn't think the movie is the be all and end all of film...what were you an investor in the film? Many people didn't like the way Platoon portrayed the American soldiers, but that's the way Oliver Stone saw it. that's it.

@AlbertEinsteinJr And I didn't say full metal jacket was uneven,but a film built on 3 acts,with the 2nd being the weakest,but still damn good,is as close to perfect as a film can get.No film is perfect.Kubrick's film is a anti-military satire,but the film still had far more real people like joker,cowboy and rafterman than anyone in platoon.Stone even turns the one ''supposed normal guy''(sheen) into a rambo with headband and one clip of ammo and all,being able to kill a handful of the enemy.lol

A soldier bashing a young man's skull in,another murdering a women,soldiers raping a young girl,blowing up children?That's a little atrocity?That's the problem,stone goes to much to the extremes in this film.''Good guys'' enlightened potheads,''bad guys'' are southern,gin swilling,racist cowards and maniacs. He tries too hard to convey the madness of what happened there,but he has no subtlety.Its one of the most overwrought presentations of war,and soldiers in any war film,ive ever seen.

And yes I believe that we could have won the Vietnam war and I support or would have supported it at the time. But that doesn't change the fact that the conditions were awful which is portrayed in the film very well.

@TheGatorfan93 Well, this movie showed a different side of the war. This is just one of the many sides of the Vietnam War. I mean this movie is based mostly on Stone's experiences so it is pretty accurate. My Lai was a huge massacre. Village atrocities did happen but not as big as My Lai. You can't prevent that stuff from happening. Little atrocities in war happen all the time. Crime happens in every war and it happened in this one. Well, it's your opinion so I respect it.

This sound track is amazing. This feels so much like that Vietnam generation. Our hearts goes out to the veterans for their ultimate sacrifice, for a war that should not be fought.

@MsCineast my dad said this is the closest a movie has gotten to vietnam, thats y he likes it. the atmosphere, environment, the two "cliques", the outlook on vietnam, the stress, and the different reasons y people were serving. but i really dont like oliver stone that much outside of his movies. and yeah definitely best film ever made.
