I pretty confused here.. on every XL1 tests the quality is like 360p max.. I mean.. don't it at least shoot in 480p? cause this quality is quite bad.. Someone please give me some more info here!
@Banikan Canon Xl1s shoots in standard definition meaning 720X576 in PAL. So its basicly 576P. But the video file I have here is crappy WMV file with 360p resolution. And its old and horribly filmed when I look it now.
I love my xl1s. I don't shoot in high def, because I like the look of the Canon so much. I have two of these cameras, and shoot everything on them, or GL1...(pretty much the same cam on the inside)
Great footage, I can tell it was your first shoot. Did you do the music for it as well? If so good job I think music is more important than video quality.
Looks really nice but that soft focus thing is bothering me...
Been playing with the XL1s and it's soft in some shots. I think I also make the mistake of shooting in frame mode. Then there in the problem of how to render out. Would really love to know the setting people are using when they get a good final image with real quality.
Like how to avoid the boxy renders, how to get a clean end product.
I think that you should film without using autofocus off, because it sucks in canon xl1s. Image gets blurred really easily. Turn the lens on MF and focus manually. This was the very first video i filmed with my Canon so I didn't know that back then.
About the rendering things. I found that rendering video as mov. usin h.264 codec and scaling footage to 1024x576. For youtube these settings work pretty well. (Look my video called ''Trip to Norway'')
good test video, for landscapes id also recomend 16:9 widescreen / frame mode, the xl1s quality isnt great unless you have the HD version but then your looking at a few grand! your work will be amazing in time to come!
thank you very much. i know that the quality isn't the best but it's still pretty damn good if you compare it to older small camcorders. im still pretty happy for the camera. your xl1s videos looked really amazing too! i think i couldn't make anything look as great as like you did.
as long as you a have a uv filter on your lens you can point your camera into the sun but i wouldnt recommend it for long periods of time considering that it can cause problems later on but short soft points into the sun to achieve a soft sunset look like you did are ok. Great video it could be better. but you have an eye for the beauty and the dramatic. keep it up.
NEVER point your camera at the light source, especially the sun. I'm not trying to attack you, just save your amazing camera's life. I have one my self, and the quality is just incredible.
and, when making music videos, your shots should be short and quick, and never more than 10 seconds.
On the other hand, you do have an amazing eye for beautiful shots, you should try using 16:9, its far more artistic though.
the XL1s quiality is pretty poor, its not a great camera.
its affordable and great for home-made/amature films, but quite frankly it should be rented rather than purchased.
and music videos can have shots as long as the piece if needs be, this music is slow and relaxing, quick cuts would make it too busy, and loose all the calmness of the song.
its a great video, i really enjoyed it, well done :)
im looking to buy one for skateboard videography.
does it have threads on the lens for a fisheye lens?

Couldn't you record in 16:9 so it looks better?

@PokeWorks I've filmed this in 2007 so I was really noob back then.

3Bproductionz 2 years ago
There's no way this cameras quality sucks if rendered the right way. By the way 28 days later was shot with this so yeah

Does the XL1s shoot in 16:9?
MovieMaker5087 3 years ago
yeah. anamorphic 16:9
heicKy 3 years ago
not true 16:9. like he said anamorphic, which basically stretches it. grab an XL2 if you want 16:9

Geez man, i wish i could afford this camera. I'm gonna get it when i get my license so that i don't get jacked bringing a Camera worth 4k.
But i gotta wait till high school either way to take videography or else i won't know how to use it.
Where do you buy it, Order from ebay? or can you go to some kind of camera shop?
ItsJustSkating 3 years ago
mine cost 2000€. I bought it from one dude from a finnish digitalvideo forum. I also got some gear with it.
I live in Finland so I think that you have a lot more different places to buy one. Try to read some video forums and ask from there.
P.S If you like to shoot skating stuff, you should buy like Panasonic DVX or Canon XM2.
XM2 is pretty sweet and cheaper than xl1s.
heicKy 3 years ago
Yeah, a Panasonic Dvc30 was my second choice.
I have not yet heard of the XM2 but i really like Canon quality.
ItsJustSkating 3 years ago
i think that canon xm2 is GL2 in northern america..
