As an FYI... The windows in MF this year were the windows at Macy's NYC last year... guess Macy's wants to keep Chicago as second city.
check for videos of macy's Light show here in Philly... They have tried to keep it going... but the May Co screwed it up and almost destroyed it when they owned John Wanamakers... It is a Great show!
When I was down there last year, there were tons of kids checking out the windows. Maybe you came on a bad day? Plus, remember when Carson's had the same circus theme year after year? Or when "Field's" did the night before Christmas many years in a row?
There are people who complain about Macy's taking over, but really Marshall Field sold his name many years ago. Don't blame Macy's.
I would like to see Macy's windows in NY,are they the same.I do know this, growing up in Chicago from the late 40's,nobody and I mean NOBODY had the elegant Christmas windows like Marshall Fields had. They would cover them up with brown paper sometime in late October and open them up in November for the season.People would be 6 to 10 deep all around Fields to see this years offering.I don't dislike Macy's,matter of fact I feel they saved the downtown location. This is just a different time.Change!
the washington dc macy's windows should of just been regular fashion windows. This paper thing and each window had only one movement and whats with this "Miss Virginia" the huge windows were carved into a small version of New York which is usually better but it was not Just Bigger. Sad! Bring back Woodies, Hechts on 7th street and Landsburg!
I miss Marshall Field's too but if Macy's hadn't bought Field's that building would now be condos and office space. At least Macy's has kept the building as what it's supposed to be-A Department Store with a lot of Fields traditions intact, like the Tiffany dome, Walnut Room,28 Shop. Department stores have a hard time in today's world because everybody is "CHEAPING OUT" and buying their crap from places like Walmart. So stop griping and be thankful there ARE Christmas windows to look at.
The Macy's windows in New york are 50 times better. These look cheap whereas the New York Macy's Christmas windows look super expensive and lavish. This sucks!
This year's theme "Yes, Virgina there is a Santa Claus" isn't even a theme, that's a stupid commerical. Although i've read that it was a story from some NYC newspaper, but i think most Chicagoans will know the commerical. What happened to the Grinch? A Christmas Carol? Rudolph? I remember Feild's did a Harry Potter theme when the first movie came out. I can't remember any good Macy's theme in recent years.
They used to be amazing. This just reminds me why I haven't set foot in a Macy's store since they took the place over. I wish I could find a list of the themes Field's used. I've been trying to remember what they did in certain years. I wish they'd get out of Chicago. Chicagoans are a different breed than they're used to.
I couldn't agree more... Marshall Field's Christmas windows were a class act. What a wonderful store. Guess you really don't know what you have until it's gone. fieldsfanschicago-DOT-org are working to bring Marshall Field's back to State Street. Visit and find out how you can help.
I took my son to see the windows for the first time today, along with my cousin. She and I remember the days when we were kids and the windows seemed truly magical. We were severely disappointed today. I can't figure out why they needed all of State street to depict letters arriving to Santa, nor why the train in the one window couldn't even be moving!!! One more tradition ruined... :(
I agree with you. While I'm happy that Macy*s did not discontinue the Christmas windows all together when they took over May Department stores, it is sad the quality went down hill. Macy*s Christmas windows in Downtown Pittsburgh can't even compare to what Kaufmann's used to do. Check out my video response to see Macy*s Pittsburgh Christmas windows. Look's like Chicago's is better than Pittsburgh's.

Yeah I agree they're really commercialized......And that theme with the letters was overdone......One window would have been enough.
