My 15 mo old grandson is in the trailer. I have been waiting forever to just know he would be in the movie, but to see him in the trailer.....Yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Oh, this is so boring. His first two films were cinematic landmarks but from then on he's become more and more pretentious. It's like he's a bad imitation of himself. But, alas, great directors have always been like this. I just rather rewatch his first two than his later movies.
does anyone else find it odd that jack as a young boy bears a strange resemblance to Jim Caviezel? And that Sean Penn is playing the adult? Both these characters faced the same battle that Jack seems to face here: the internal battle between accepting man's brutal human nature and the desire to transcend nature with love/grace.
dude... I am SO glad you spotted that too!!! the very first time, and everytime I rewatch the trailer that's exactly what I think to myself, the boy has such a striking resemblance to Jim Caviezel. It's as if Malick was looking for that on purpose. As if it's part of the whole ateur theory he's got going on
@sixamsedna exactly. I watched it for the first time, and I said, hey there's pvt. witt as a boy with his southern accent. and hey, there's sgt. welsh as a businessman. And when the boy says, "Father, mother, always you wrestle inside me", i instantly thought of the quote in Platoon, "born of two fathers, both fighting for possession of his soul." Here it seems as though both Witt and Welsh are fighting for Jack's soul. Sort of like Thin Red Line Part Deux
I can't wait. Wish there was a better view but the images of the child running look extraordinary. No one shoots more beautiful and poetic film images than Malick. No one.
Is the CC off? I'm pretty sure Brad Pitt says "All things...guide us, to the End of TIme" and not "All the times...guideless, to the End of Time" (Which doesn't really make sense anyway).
@faithakiyama Probably.. I did not make the English transcript myself (only the timing) and could not check if it was right with this bad sound as it is not my native language. And I had given full confidence to the person that made it (as English is his native language). The sense I understood for his (maybe false) transcription was Jack (Penn) feels lost, guideless without his parents, especially his mother, some years after the death of his brother.
@unviaggiatore No problem at all! I can't be 100% certain myself unless someone else who has seen the trailer in theaters can confirm. I just thought the other transcription would make more sense if Pitt's dialogue was meant to be a broken-up, single statement :)
@faithakiyama And for "all the times", I thought it was a way to say he will understand all the other times he had fallen before. So it had a sense pleasant to my mind, but I will probably correct it, if it is not what is said.
Well, I love Pitt and Penn but I often find Malick's films to be overlong and kinda boring, and I know that makes me sound unintelligent, but they are, with the exception of Badlands.
@AndrewMann552 Well then I guess my screenname is slightly ironic because I do not care for those kinds of films. I created my youtube account shortly after Tarantino and Rodriguez did Grindhouse, so my screename is a reference to that film. As far as popcorn bullshit goes, I have no doubt that you watch more of that on a regular basis than I do. I can appreciate great works of cinematic art just as well, if not better than the next guy. I was merely suggesting that I found his films a bit slow
This gives us no clue as to what the movie's about. If it's about anything. Looks like home movies of suburbia shot with an artistic eye and a high quality camera. And...?
@Jove89 Jove89, chill the hell out man. Why are you so defensive? I'm using "crap" to refer to general "stuff", not in a derogatory manner. You act as if I've personally insulted you by posting a neutral comment or something.
@DBCOOPER888 The basics of it are that the film follows the growth and "evolution" of Brad Pitt's son while also making cosmic connections to the birth and evolution of Earth.
I have never made a prediction from a trailer before but wow this i unlike anything I have ever seen especially when it comes to cinematography.... "best director" , "best cinematography" no doubt in my mind.... academy awards for 2011 wow
@PlagueisTheWise It is not John Williams, it's "The Moldau," a classic piece of Smetana. It is also the piece of music cited as the basis for the Israeli national anthem, "Hatikvah," of which John Williams did a nice arrangement for the "Munich" soundtrack. But they are different pieces.
This will probably end up as one of the best films of the 2010's, earning it's place with such classics like 2001 and the modern masterpiece, Children of Men.
@ClasicCriminal Is it sad that I didn't realize that the CC button was there, or what it did until your comment? >_> Yeah, little bit. But thanks. I now know something new, so yay.
@Neonman78 I believe it is an individual pointing at an empty seat he wants to sit in while being completely oblivious to the super awesome trailer that is playing on the screen
It looks like an epic film. Tree of Life has been on my Most Anticipated list for a while now. Can't wait for it drop in theatres. Malick is a brilliant director.
wow, the cinematography, yeah. That part when he's walking over the pews in the church? Great visuals. This is one of those movies that, by the trailer, look to change people. And 99.9% of movies can't do that on a grand scale
Terrence Malick for best picture, best director, best writer, best everything. He should have won it for the thin red line, but the tree of life will make up for that. Mark my words. A new era of film is upon us. Real film. Film that transcends through the ages. This is what cinema is all about. Truth in moving image. GIVE US TRUTH. This is truth.

Is it just me or are Malicks films all about the same thing.
Ringing the same chord over and over.
And the way he is ringing that chord is, yunno, becoming increasingly pretentious and flat.
Loved Badlands. Liked the Thin Red Line. Not sure about this one.
