  • ........?

  • If this is more work from the Matt Brown I'm thinking then you must have made the film Scratching? Awesome film, very unique. If not you, then your work here looks good anyway :)

  • cool! love the angels an

d the music cutting.. everything.. what can did you use?

  • COOL! VERY EPIC!

  • Beautiful Work. I study film and your type of work is very similiar to mine. How did you do the effect of half the kids face being evil?

  • Very good. And that little boy is a natural actor.

  • my cousins at 1:01 to 1:04 :) you should teach me how to do this the next time i visit Leanora.... shes my grandma:) im lady Katie you might know my dad, Dannel House, my grandmothers son, we might have met before... i don't remember but,,, i would love to know how you do this, its truly amazing....

    p.s.

i am really into drama and quite the actor, if you're ever in need of an actress send me a message

  • hi Matt...

  • Extremely talented filmmaker I totally loved your work if i was making a movie now i would hire you right away it only took me 3 seconds to know that you are a great filmmaker 100 stars

  • @8888Eastman Thank you very much!!!

  • @8888Eastman Good camera, pointless story?

  • @einstienear LOL...look up the word "REEL"...this is not a story...it's a REEL.

  • Amazing stuff, keep up the great work

  • Feels more like a weird dream sequence.

  • incredible, absolutely mindblowing

  • Yeah I checked out the rest of your work...nice work...

  • If you get a script that matches your shooting its going to be off the chain for real.......very very nice....a good DP is what im missing....

  • @ohioproducer

Thank you! There are script to these videos, but this is a reel...a montage of all my narrative stuff. :)

  • i read down there

that ur recommending HV30 (CANON) instead of HV20

    ??????????

i havent tried ANY but im just about to get HV20

so just can u tell me

WHATS better in HV30 ? now

  • what type of camera or camcorder did you use?

  • Was interesting indeed. My only problem is it appears you may have used magic bullet or something of the like to colour treat the footage. if not then what ever was done seemed somewhat off, perhaps too much diffusion? It was only on some shots [i believe the man swimming was one of them].. All and all, not bad :)

  • Just AWESOME!

  • Absolutely stunning Matt. Great work!!

  • it was good only thing is i think the contrast was too high but good job :P

  • what camera did u use to film this...very nice job!

  • haha

  • Great job! Very inspiring

  • i shouldnt have watched this right now.

alone in the dark. in the attic.

  • you are awesome, great inspiration, love ur work

  • dude that was great! That little girl that looked over got me a little lol. But honestly very well done!

  • saw ur comment..still that lil gurl got me~ :)

  • I love this thing! I don't know how many times I've watched it. And it still blows me away. As a fellow student filmmaker, this is inspiring to me. So thank you!

P.S. What effect did you use to get that text flicker type thing at the end for your credits? Did you use After Effects?

  • Thank you!!!!

I actually just did it in regular editing. No after effects.

  • This is great!

  • Thank you! :)

  • man, you're really a genius! for my short movie, i want to use your effects

  • Thanks!

  • fantastic and amazing!

  • i watched this today in school for a class, and wow. was it suppose to be like a horror movie type deal i thought it was amazing but my classmated didn't, they said it was stupid. i think it was incredible. bravo. it's awesome.

  • Thank you very much! You should ask your classmates to read the description and understand that it's not a short film. It's a reel (portfolio) of my work. Like a collage of all the stuff I've done at college. Thanks for the kind words!! :)

  • Awesome work, but how can you get the rights to use music like this; does copyright not matter simply because it is your show reel?. i find this topic confusing. You went to college, i presume you have a better insight than most into this. What is the go?

    It is a great reel.

p.s What sort of cam or cams was this shot on?

  • If you're not selling your reel then it's not an issue. If it's simply for show and credited when showing to employers how you shoot and edit then it's totally fine. Actually, almost all of this video was shot on a $200 consumer piece of crap, lol. I have HD stuff up on vimeo if you want to take a look at it. The link is on my profile. thanks for the nice comment!

  • what editing software do you use?

  • awh.

  • what is this music you used?

  • AMAZING!!

  • WOW that was incredible, did you go to film school to learn all this stuff? do you have to complete highschool to get into film school?

  • canon hv20 or 30 used??? and which one is the better one??

  • I didn't use either one for this. I used a little home video camera that costs $200 to make most of this. I haven't used the HV20, but I'm sure the HV30 has better features, and it looks nicer. In my opinion, the HV30 is better than even the HV40, hehe.

  • Thank you for your nice and fats answer :D!

    Thank you!Thank you!

only $200 ?? this qualitiy is really good!

which name has your cam?and which graphik programm or "looking" programm did you used?

    :)

    keep it up.!

  • I don't recommend the camera I used in this video. Get the HV30. It's an amazing camera. Also, get Sony Vegas for editing. It's wonderful.

  • okey thx!! :-)

how much does the sony vegas cost?

  • Wow I had a major headache now your vid made my day and took my headache away

  • Wow, thank you!

  • wow thAT WAS CRaZy but why is it with the fat ppl

  • That was possibly THEE most random ''short film'' ive ever seen, i mean gr8 camera and sum pretty kl shots but was it actually sposedf 2 make sense? just confused me

  • The title says it's a 'reel'. A reel is a compilation of ones work in a montage to show the wide variety of projects they've worked on so that employers and others can see samples of their work in one cluster rather than watching them all one by one. Again, it's not a short film, it's a reel.

  • Ahha i see now, that kinda makes ALOT more sense now. thats pretty kool then, i think i just read the side bit and asumed it was sposed to b a short film lol, im pretty tired. Nice work then pal xD

  • Excellent!!! Really good!

  • wow that looks great !!!!what type of camera

    you using?

  • This is cynical. I like it ! If you have any behind the scenes footage or could do a "how you did this shot" kind of thing, that would be really cool and much appreciated! Great work, keep it up.

  • really gd. your very talented.

    what is the music?

  • wow nice, I'm in the VFX and motion graphics program but i make short films with my friend who is in the digital and media arts program. I love to all parts of the film making process writing, acting, filming, and editing.

  • Because im going to the Art Institue of pittsburgh and someone showed me your reel and told me you did everythign yourself and said you were coming out with a feature and i just watched it on youtube for the first time today.

  • Oh I see.

I don't know who told you I was coming out with a feature. I'm writing a couple feature screenplays and doing a few short films this year. I'll hopefully get a feature going in the next couple of years. Right now I'm sticking to honing in on my craft and getting better before I make a leap trying to get funding for a feature, hehe. I'm about to finish up on a narrative short called Aphids. It should be done in the next couple of weeks. Are you in the film production program?

  • did you go the art institue?

  • Yeah, in Seattle. Are you going there? How did you know I went there? hehe

  • Very cool! I enjoyed the video! Good luck with everything!

  • Are you trying to make me kill myself?

  • Wow, you want to kill yourself? If this is making you want to kill yourself then you've got issues and need to go get help as soon as you can.

  • lmao

  • that was... disturbing.. but i couldn't stop watching it ha

  • You know this film reminds me of Chernobyl

  • That's 3:26 seconds of my life i'll never get back.

  • Thank you for that 3:26! I'm glad you liked it! ;)

  • It's so good to have heard from you..thanks for the message..keep in touch... I really love your work.. Once again can't wait to see more :)

  • Mark roper my director friend will be checking this out and so will the maxwells, world wide famous for french imersion stuff, its too epic to explain though. I will contact u later if they need u

  • Thank you! I look forward to hearing from them! :)

  • Matt brown... i want to see more of your work im a filmmaker aswell.. sometimes life gives signs and you just got to take them..

  • Thank you very much! I have a new short film I'm going to be putting online next month. It's too long for youtube, so it'll be on vimeo. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the comment!

  • Yes yes, you must become a professional film maker! The world needs your eye.

  • Thank you! ;)

  • I love all the high contrast as well as the way you used light. I acutaly just started film school back in april.

  • WOW amazing :)

  • I LOVE THIS BUT WHAT HAPPEND in it?

  • Thank you! But, it's a reel, not a movie...

  • what camera did you use

  • omg i love the style of this...

    truly amazing.

    [SUBBED!]

    :)

  • Thank you!! :)

  • Very well done.

  • buenisimo!

  • u must have won best n show huh?

  • Yeah, but I'm still learning. Thanks for the comment!

  • |:-(

  • I'm not crazy about your personal artistic style, but the camera work is very nice. What type of equipment was used? Technical side was very well done. The school you attend(ed) clearly taught some pretty good technique, especially in post. I'd be interested in seeing a work of yours that is less artsy visually and more about story and raw direction. Thanks for sharing, good effort

  • i can't tell if the filmmaking style is actually good, or if it's just the mix of music along with some of the effects.

anyways my main comment - cinematography is supposed to be subtle, and this is anything but. everyone seems to assume great cinematography means pretty pictures, or something intensely framed, but 90% of the time that isn't the case.

  • Of course this is good. Just because you have a different approach to filming something doesn't mean everything else is wrong.

Cinematography ISN'T supposed to subtle. And if you think it is, tell that to Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle, Oscar nominated director David Lynch, Darren Aronosfky, Tom Tykwer and many other big directors who choose this approach to filmmaking. I have a huge respect for Roger Deakins, and I would never say that his style is wrong just because I do it differently.

  • just because you can use a color corrector doesn't make it good. sorry.

  • Cinematography is supposed to be whatever the filmmaker wants it to be. There is no strict guideline on how subtle it is supposed to be. You have a VERY conservative view on this, and not an open-minded one at that. You really need to broaden your horizons, understanding, and even tolerance if you plan on making it anywhere in the film world. You're comment is just rubbish. I definitely know how to make a frame have huge meaning with what is going on, and I have won awards based on my shooting!

  • I totally agree with Meheh.

You're right on. As long as you know about how to make your subject/scene look spectacular (lighting, framing, sound, etc.) you have full control over how to present it.

You can be subtle, dramatic, intense, whatever you like and however the audiences respond to it.

    5/5 man. Awesome showreel.

Now how did I get here from looking at HV20 videos? Is this some of this shot on an HV20?

  • Hehe, thank you, Shoedoctor. I appreciate it!

None of this was shot on an HV20. I think most of it was shot on a $200 consumer camera, and the rest was shot on a DVX of some sort.

  • On one hand Meheh is right: there is no rule for making a good looking pictures, with good light etc. Each DOP should have his own style.

On the other hand Shadowblabla is right, cuz a showreel isn't a movie, it's your resume, it has to be clear to the audience what your style of filming looks like. In this showreel you show too many effects, people see flashes everywhere and dont understand what they're actually looking at.

    Yes, nice color correction!

  • Of course a reel isn't a movie. I think people can definitely grasp what they're looking at. If you've seen the uncompressed version it's very clear. Youtube dumbs the quality, so it's very hard to see the shot sometimes. I'll try uploading the HD version so you can see what I mean. Thank you for the comment, though! I appreciate it. Also, this isn't really my resume. These are all projects I did for school and had to make a reel to graduate. My more serious work is in my newer videos.

  • pretty good

  • Nice show reel!!

You could really get somewhere with this :)

  • this video is insane! in a good way.. very cool..

  • Excellent Video. I really love your style. If you are interested, I made a similar type of trailer with my HV30. You can find it on my profile called "Fahrenheit "Movie Trailer" " Or something like that. :) I had to see this a few times. It's truly amazing. BTW, I am 17

  • Hey Matt, what are you up to now days? I the Shipley films dude. Opened a studio in LA. keep intouch. o

  • You are F*ing amazing my friend!

Wow, I've got a few things I'd like you to do for me. :)

I also know some good directors and if you I could show them your work and see if you could get a job with them.

  • if i would watch this 10 times in a row i'll probably get crazy haha

  • werea the fat guy lol

  • What type of camera do you use?

  • Comment removed

  • u made a awesome movie

  • In terms of your style, it's clear that you have a grasp of how you see things, which connects with how you light your setups. What this reel does NOT showcase is your ability to direct actors during exposition. I think a healthy reel will have a mixture of style, and substance. Show us something that consists of two people talking and how your direction of them translates to the screen.

  • Thank you for the nice comment. About the directing aspect, it's almost impossible to get a directing gig right out of school, so I needed to highlight the more technical and visually appealing moments of my work in order to attract employers. If I showed a scene with dialogue it would have been pretty much useless. In the film world it's hard to jump straight to directing, and gradually rising through technical aspects is the way to go for me.

  • Nice reel but I agree with jmprater. He is'nt referring to a scene with dialogue. He is referring to the shots that you chose to include in the reel. I feel like at some points, because of the overload of visual effects, it is hard to keep track of the subjects and actors. Dialogue is not needed to show screen direction. I guess what I would suggest is having shots where the viewer can connect with the actor more. When they are somewhat invested in the character, direction is more evident.

  • I really like this video. I too am a film student.

I appreciate the "darkness" of this video.

  • you got major talent!

  • omfg that was to good are you even human??? if you are 5/5 if your not... well then i think that would be a diffrent story!!!

  • That wuz insanee!!

    U did a great job!!!!

  • hey man my name is matt brown!

  • I'm you.

  • That was awesome. good job.

  • nice 5/5

  • Dude, you have real talent. Hope to see some films by you in the future.

  • excellent.

  • That was kickass! 5/5 This looks like a real movie trailer!

  • Real and Beautiful

    Wonderful !

  • That is so good.

  • Absolutely beautiful show reel.

Would love to work with you some time: your cinematography is mind blowing!

I've just finished my first feature film, which as well as writing, I produced entirely single handedly (apart from the actors!). It would be great to collaborate on my next one.

I know I've got a lot to learn, but I'm still young!

    Misha

  • weird as shit...

  • What Song From Hans Zimmer Is this?

  • great job man. i like it alot

  • not bad man

  • Nevermind, I found it.

  • Nice job Matt. Seriously, this is pretty good. Sucks though, I was looking for the video where the guy falls in the pool.

  • pretty cool.

  • boring...

  • good reel mr. Brown, I can tell you have a great imagination and will have to look at your other stuff. 5 stars and I hope you stay passionate about this stuff cause I know you'll have a great future in it one day.

  • i find it boring

    but i love the editing

  • so true

  • W....T.............F WAS THat

  • Read the description.

  • oh cool....good luck in the futre

  • Just have to watched this again :D

  • wow!

  • some amazing shots in here matt! Really amazing! My only point was about the colour correction. I dont know how a rerender would blow anything out, but I loved it nether the less.

  • nice imagery and editing. but too much color correction for my tastes. Was its all digital?

  • this is a re-rendered version of it, so the colors blew out too much after everything. It looks better in the DVD. Thanks, and yes it's all digital.

  • WHATT!!! GREAT !!!

  • AMAZING!

  • Beautiful cinematography.

  • this is awesome. wats it about and what editing machine did you use?

  • What program do you edit with?

  • Awesome visual effects work, Matt! What do you use for your coloring? After Effects? Magic Bullet? Final Cut? Shake? Was most of this shot on video? Keep it up!

  • amazing.

  • Nice one!

  • Great reel!

  • Great show reel! you really know how to create an atmosphere.

    Check mine out,

If your interested pm me dude.

    Joey.

  • Masterful! Beautiful! May you have a successful and fulfilling career!

  • this is really fantastic dude, i don't mean to sound corny, but you really are in touch with objects, forces and energies around you that you must capture to make a good film, and not only that but some of these shots are pure genius!(falling in the pool for one) idk what people are saying about fat people lol. basically keep it up, its great

  • this has nothing to do with fat people falling.WTF

  • Woah, this is pretty hardcore.

Tell me, what did you use?

    Program, and maybe what Recorder?

    < 3
