@escapethecrash WKUK are hilarious but not in the same league as Mr. Show. With almost every Mr. Show sketch there are layers upon layers of thoughtful commentary on modern society that can be peeled away by the perceptive watcher. WKUK gets laughs for the most part via shock value.
This is the sketch that changed my perception of comedy. The perfect bridge from juvenile blue humor to absurdist satire. It should be federal law that you see this sketch by age 10.
If people were introduced to good comedy so young, what we consider to be 'good comedy' would change dramatically. Comedy Central's lineup would change quite a bit (except maybe for the daily show/colbert report) My parents showed me Monty Python sketches when I was a little kid, since then only Mr. Show has been able to compete.
i agree. I recall Bob Odenkirk talking about how SNL would spend thousands of dollars on sets and makeup, where a simple piece of black tape for a mustache would suffice.
Same here, maybe not this sketch in particular (great as it is), but this show and Home Movies completely changed my perceptions on what comedy should be as well.
@F33bs I wouldn't call it satire so much as absurd humor. The DVD commentary reveals that the writers came up with the idea of this skit when one of them remarked that a certain restaurant was so fancy that they wouldn't let you crap there. They just took that idea as far as they could.
I like how Frenchy is inexplicably a British chimney sweep.
Why is a Cockney chimney sweep named Frenchy? HIlarious!

@mseales Just curious. What exactly is the satire here?
F33bs 1 year ago
@F33bs
Well, I would say it mocks the conceit of a "fine-dining" experience by taking it to an absurd extreme.
