I am sorry, I push the dislike, but I didnt mean it, I just tried to push "like" :/ anyway, this play is super and I love Gary and Tim both. Ok, Gary is more ;)
it's in a sense parodying the play "Hamlet" by Shakespeare. rosencrantz and guildenstern are actually minor characters in the real play, they're kind of like puppets/spies used to spy on hamlet by the king. this movie is centralizing around r&g during their time in denmark with hamlet's family.
@Kraken812 its basically a derivative of hamlet, meaning the author gave two of the minor characters their own story. he made it an existentistialist critique though, questioning whether we have any control over what happens to us, etc. etc.
I studied this for senior English, and a friend and I always put our hands up to read the parts of Ros & Guil, and we learnt this scene by heart, and would just rattle it off at lunch time =D So much fun! Sometimes I wish I was a guy, just so I could be in this play.
On disc 2 of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, during Tim's interview mostly, Tim and Gary talk about how the two of them would rehearse and re-rehearse scenes all the time because they were so much fun to do. He said that even after the scenes were shot, they would keep rehearsing them anyway because they were such fun. I bet this was one of those scenes.
Yeah, it's great! I've seen it several times. I realize this is an old comment, but if you still haven't seen it yet, I'd recommend it. It's written by the same man, Tom Stoppard, who wrote the theater version. It's a comedy, but not the traditional slap-stick comedy, it's more of wordplay and irony, so if you're into that sort of thing then I think you'll like it.
Yay! Yeah, I finally got to see it, and wow is it good! The lines are so clever, and you're right- it's really good as far as humor goes. Thanks so much!
I would get so tongue-tied if I tried what they're doing...
I think I might watch this tonight. I haven't watched it in about three/four months(shame on me!), and we're studying Hamlet in my Brit Lit class, so I'm in a Hamlet mood. ^_^

I adore this film. It's wonderful... And when you think about 'Hamlet' you can totally see this fit in with that play. It's brilliant.
